So I spent the last hour before crawling into bed last night playing a bit of Saints Row 3. Gotta say - the humour and action are even more OTT than before, and I had a few good chuckles within the first 10 minutes alone. I don't want to spoil anything yet, but I will say that for the $50 pricetag, even the little bit I've played so far seems totally worth it. I will say that watching Johnny Gat rob a bank while wearing a Johnny Gat mask was just downright hilarious. If you enjoyed the previous 2, I'd suggest picking this up.

I haven't played SR1 or SR2, but I really want to pick up SR3 (because it looks so over the top). Do you think I'll be at a disadvantage for not having played the first 2 (in terms of storyline and general enjoyment of the game)?

No, don't really need to play the other 2. You can pick them up in a combo pack on the cheap if you want to, but you won't be missing much. SR2 introduced Shaundi and Pierce though, so there's some good humour to be had there.

Imo SR2 should be played through because it adds to the main characters' depth. They make a few mentions to stuff that happened and you'd understand a bit more what Ulthor represents. But I wouldn't say it's required. Still, why not get it if it's cheap, 2 wild rides are better than one!

Also, the SR2 "Daamn, those some nice shoes!" is still Pierce's best line in both games!

Honestly it would be best to go through the first one as well. The second one will make more sense on a lot of things. Idk why wouldn't want to if you plan on playing the third. The first one was good, second one got better, and I haven't played the third one but I bet it follows the same format and got better.

If you are going to get either 1 or 2, get 2. It explains a lot more of the story, and also shines light on most of the main characters and why they are how they are.

You'd still be confused by a lot of things. In the main story you interact with characters you met and worked for in the first one. If you run through the first, you'll understand why you're helping them, and get a kick out of them returning. Otherwise your character just meets all these random people he already knows for some reason without explanation. Heck, the last mission of the game which was a pretty major plot point revolved around events that occurred in the first game. If you have any interest in the story (which I loved to death), then it's not up for debate. You need to get them in order. If you're just getting it to play the game go ahead and get three for the most up to date gaming experience.

I am enjoying SR3. I have a bone to pick with it about the striped out customization, but that's not getting in the way of me enjoying the game too much.

Yea, I was disappointed when I hijacked a tank... And then couldn't paint it. So I tried an APC... Can't paint that anymore. Can you at least finally paint helicopters? Nope. It's like they took the failbat to vehicle customization. So much for my Saints PMC themed Garage. At least the HMMWVs can be painted. No adding decals this time around though.

Ahh well, the rest of the game is still great, and I love the main character's reaction when he goes back to see Angel after finishing his final test.

Skyrim first, then SR3. I will get this game though because its fun and that's all it really is. GTA got serious and that was the issue with that game, SR is nowhere near serious.

Do what I do - Alternate. That way they both stay fresh, and you won't get bored halfway through one of them.

That was the deal breaker for me. Trying to recreate my character from Saints Row 2 in the Initiation Station, I discovered they no longer supported her hairstyle, voice, tattoos, jewelery, or clothes. Between that and the other downgrades, I could no longer be bothered getting around the +80% Australia tax.

I'm a bit miffed about the branched ending of SR3. Without spoilering much I'll say one option gives ALOT more than the other, at least in my eyes. Both give an extra mission, a vehicle and another suit but IMO the "bad" option gets rewarded with more awesome stuff. Although bad is also subjective, so I'll say it's the choice that goes against the music in that climax mission

I am slightly regretting getting Skyrim now... dang it. That's fantasticly amazing. The best thing about it in my opinion is that its not some guy with his voice, its the actual guy.

It's not like the customization is bad. It is actually really good. You would be very hard pressed to find a game with better customization except for maybe Saints row 2. That's the problem. I wanted and was lead to believe that there would be more and more customization. I felt rather cheated when I realized that all the penthouses and all the penthouse upgrades looked the same on the inside. Real bad part, now I we have to wait till Saints row the forth to get plane and boat modding.

On the up side, take a street sweeper into the shop. It has some cool mods you can put on it.

Yes it is. It's been nerfed from Saints Row 2 and, while it's a different genre, most racing games feature far better car customization than SR3. It's not like it's difficult to make any and every vehicle moddable. Just Volition being lazy.

On a side note, I -have- found a glitch that makes most unmoddable cars moddable in some capacity: Enter a mechanic's bay with a moddable car, and fire up the customization interface. Select "Garage" on the first screen, then highlight the unmoddable vehicle you want to dress up. Don't click on it, just highlight the name. Press Escape to go back to the previous screen, and select 'accept' when the prompt shows up. You should now be looking at a modding interface for your unmoddable vehicle. If not, you did something wrong. It only works on road vehicles AFAIK, as I can't seem to get it to work with aircraft. Haven't tried boats yet, but there you go. I now have a purple tank to go with my HMMWVs

It's been 3 days since I ran that mission and I STILL can't get "Holding out for a hero" out of my head. That moment was just too epic for words.
