The Outsider was a C'tan who went insane when he ate other C'tan because they were still alive within him persay. Thus he earned the name lord of Insanity and his mere presence would drive people insane/to commit suicide/rip out cybernetic implants. Anyway, it's heavily hinted that the Eldar were able to trap him in the dyson sphere (which the Nids avoid like the plague) but they fear him and apparently have prophesied that "One dark night, he shall return." Anyway that's who he was BEFORE the C'tan retconn
