The screw tops however, are a different matter. I have had loads of them dry up and I don't think I am alone.

I agree that the screw tops dried paint out way fast.

To me the bottle isn't the biggest deal as I already transfer all my GW paints into dropper bottles when I get them. It would be nice to cut that step out completely. Then again I'm phasing out of GW paints as much as possible these days.

Is there a decent replacement for Reaper Pro Dragon Gold? That paint is invaluable to me and was sadly discontintued. I have 2 of the HD paints and the red is complete crap and the bone is meh. Neither covered particularly well, especially when compared to Mechrite Red and Dheneb Stone.

I don't know if it's an issue with the pots, but I've replaced all my GW pots with dropper bottles and so far(been about a year or two) none of them have dried out.

Really they should sell that in tubs.

I can see it now, the GW $75 Gallon O' Devlan! And we'd buy it, that's the sad part.

I will never understand why people would use plastic glue instead of cyanoacrylate for everything in this hobby save clear plastic parts like canopies. CA is better in every possible way.

BSI's gap filling CA glue is the best stuff around IMO.

Foundation White will be the only thing worth getting for me. Everything else is done better by Vallejo and I make my own washes.

If only I had room in my Sig for that!

I think as long as Graveyard earth doesn't change at all formula wise I'll be fine. That's the only non wash/metallic/foundation from GW that I use anymore and it's just for bases.

Was really fun to play with! I used to throw it on my ceiling and watch it slowly fall of and catch it. Roll it into a ball, Squish it to make fart noises. Pull it a part was kinda fun too. It felt different than anything else because while it was sorta like semi liquid. It was clay at the same time so while it could stretch out really far. It could break and it felt like kinda a rubbery snapping break when it did.

Was a great product!

I used the re enact the Blob movies using my Gak. It was a great product, slimy without being sticky. Impossible to remove from carpet once it dried though.

It's interesting that so many people are worried about losing current colors that Vallejo will continue to make for the foreseeable future. Tentacle Pink is very much alive and well in the Game Colour range. If it isn't carried locally, order it online.

I'm mostly looking forward to new supplement colors like washes and foundations. Perhaps even some new metals(can never have too many shades of dark gold). Foundation White is the biggest thing for me, and I can see it selling well.

2 weeks? Is shipping that slow in the North?

While I'm not saying that Vallejo needs to be the ONLY paint you use, if a color by GW is discontinued like Pink, but Vallejo still makes it, then you can just order the one color you no longer have and be done with it.

Is your LGS a GW store? If not then I'm quite sure that they can special order Vallejo paints through their wholesaler.

I personally drive 60 miles to get Vallejo Paints(buying at least $40 worth at a time to justify the trip), but have access to Reaper, P3 and GW paints locally. Then there are specialty items like Polyurethane Primers and certain Liquitex products that I have no option but to order online. While it isn't ideal, I need those products and get them where I can.

Are there monthly minimums they have to sell or order?

these are the questions they are asked, maybe his game store doesnt carry the product because of these , maybe they cant order so small of an order

It's understandable, I just think that it's more reasonable to expect people in more remote areas to have to mail order a few paints a year than to stop a complete overhaul of the Citadel paint line.

The argument isn't "my colors are going away forever," it's "It will now be inconvenient for me to get my colors."

I like convenience, it's a great thing. But this isn't a time where I feel a huge amount of empathy.

Exactly this. The only reason most people use GW paints in the first place is convenience. They are everywhere that GW products are sold. Do you really use so much paint that you need it NOW and can't wait a few days for shipping? I just view this whole "GW is the only thing I use because I have excuses" thing as unreasonable.

Might as well completely swap to Vallejo now outside of washes. And maybe grab a 6 pack of Devlan Mud.

Both of the Vallejo Game Colour paints are 1:1 matches for the GW ones as I have both of them in my collection.

I think people forget that Vallejo also has the extensive Model Colour range with normal names.

@Loki

Vallejo Game Colour has Heavy Pigment paints which are the same as foundations. Heavy red actually covers better than Mechrite Red.

I haven't tried their inks yet though.

And you got this information how?

And sadly Reapers HD line is lackluster. Granted I only have 2 colors(red and bone) but they don't cover all that well.

If you are worried about a color being discontinued, fear not. The Vallejo Game Colours are 99% matches to the current GW colors and they aren't going anywhere. VGC Turquoise is a 1:1 match to Hawk Turquoise. I'm holding the 2 right now and have done a test swatch just to make sure.

The only things I stocked up on are devlan mud(gonna have to try that Army Painter stuff though) and Graveyard Earth(because all my bases use it and I want enough to finish the armies I have).

I still like GW's consistency over Vallejo. Especially Bleached Bone. The VGC version is like water.

You must have gotten a bad batch of it. My VGC Bleached Bone is quite thick. I've had some paints be way watery off the shelf. I just ask for replacements, never been an issue. Perhaps test out a drop from the bottle before buying it. If buying online... roll the dice I guess.

The texture paints will need to be sold in bigger tubs if they expect people to buy it and use it to base models. As it stands I can base like 15 armies for about $15 with some Woodland Scenics ballast and Aleens Tacky Glue.

Since when is "GW" a hobby? They are a company. If they disappeared I'd move right on to some other tabletop game and not a feth will be given.

And Ghaz is right. No two companies produce the EXACT same colors. VMC tried very hard to match GW colors, and in most cases they are 99% there. The only way to completely match it would be to have the same manufacturer using the same formula and the same materials.

So, for those who are worried about having integral colors reformulated, buy up a little stockpile of those colors. I went and bought 3 Graveyard Earths because I use them on my bases and not all of my current armies are finish so I need that paint in the future.

Vallejo is boutique paint? And in the days of the internet, nothing is really hard to find.

This wouldn't be an issue if GW were just increasing their paint line. it's the fact that they are fething with the current line that has people concerned. If anything that is something GW should be glad about, as it means that people actually care about and want to buy their product. Changing formulas runs the risk of losing some of those customers, and they aren't really going to have some big influx of new customers to replace those who move to Vallejo or Reaper or P3.

If the rumours are true they seem to be vastly expanding their paint and supplies range which sounds like a great thing to me.

The "dry" range is purportedly paints for drybrushing.

That sounds very strange, I cant imagine why youd need special paint for dry brushing. Maybe solid paints i guess? Will be interesting to see anyway.

You must not drybrush very often. Having a paint that is thicker and a little "dryer" is ideal for drybrush as you want as little paint on the brush as possible. you don't want it soaking up into the brush like you would with norm paints.

These days the only thing I drybrush is chainmail armor. Drybrushing as a finishing technique across an entire model isn't appealing to me. That said, drybrushing is a decent way to get a tabletop standard finish on an army quickly.

I don't understand why we need so many shades of green. I understand shades of brown what with leather, dirt and so on, but green? I have 5 shades of green in my collection and that is plenty. Don't make me count all my browns. I have a ton.

That said, the glazes are odd color choices, don't see much use there.

Out of all those in the pics, I can only see myself buying the base metals and ceramite white, as well as the dry metals. Hopefully the formula for the silver Layers hasn't changed as GW's chainmail is much smoother than Vallejo's.

Waaagh_Gonads wrote:I spoke yesterday to a source in Nottingham and he said that the reason the whole range has been changed (names and all) is that some clown in GW legal when drafting the last contract to outsource the paint manufacture managed to transfer the rights to the names to the outsourced manufacturer.

Not a problem until GW came back to renegotiate a new contract and the other company demanded a bucket of money (millions of pounds).

So GW changed the names of their entire line and to disguise their ineptitude added in a heap more colours (they were planning on doing it but this sped up the arrival).

Also there are supposed to be pigment changes thanks to new manufacturer as people have discussed earlier RE: differing shades of ultramarine blue over the years.

This sounds entirely believable.

Still sticking with my early prediction of "Project Prisoner" theory of being a Dark Angel vs. Fallen/CSM starter set with a "catch the fallen/protect the prisoner" storyline. Crossing my fingers.

methinks you posted in the wrong thread. This thread is about paint, not the 6th edition starter set.

wyomingfox wrote: My personal experiences with Vallejo Heavy (Foundation) is that the paint applies very chalky and suprisingly does not cover well.

I haven't found that so far. They do seem to have very little sheen to them (the inconsistency of the finish across the Vallejo range is one of my minor quibbles with them) and like most of the Vallejo range they need a very good shake before use, but the couple of Heavies that I've been using have applied perfectly.

I agree with all of what Insaniak says. I use VGC Heavy Red and it works perfectly. Needs a little thinning but then so do most paints. And it covers much better than Mechrite Red. Sadly the 2 Reaper HD's that I have(Red and Bone) have terrible coverage.

Even if licensing of the names isn't the REASON for the company switch, changing the formula IS reason for the name change as the colors will NOT be the same as they are now.

I just took a wiff of my Devlan mud and it doesn't really smell "bad". It smells like some sort of solvent. Not as bad as acetone or turpentine.

I change all of my GW paints to dropper bottles. Worth the $.33 each to do it. Allows me to keep the paint longer than using the GW pots. Same with my P3's. Dropper bottles are what all paint should be in for this hobby.

And my Badab Black does smell slightly sharper than Devlan Mud. Interesting.

Why do people think that GW has ANY claim to the word ultramarine? They didn't invent them or the color. Both existed before 40k was thought up. GW isn't god. Let it go.

EDIT: or the term Space Marine for that matter. The movie Alien was around way before GW made 40k. And I'm sure it existed before the Alien movies.

I managed to buy 6 devlan mud a week ago.

That said, I just got back from GW and Ceramite White is THE ONLY white paint you will ever need. It covers insanely well. As does Macragge Blue.

Keep in mind that I am in no way a fanboy of GW, hate their business practices, but this they seem to have right.

I tried the Waywatcher Green glaze, it's interesting. I can only see it working on a white base coat.

The dry paints are meh. Drybrushing isn't a technique that I use on anything besides chainmail so nothing big here for me.

The texture paints don't seem worthwhile as you will need quite a few pots to base an army, which can be done cheaper through traditional means(albeit the texture paints may save you time, which may be more important to you).

Sadly it was lunch time as I showed up so I have to go back to finish my marine and see how the other paints stack up.
