You know, I got the complete DoW1 last time it was deeply discounted and I haven't ran it once.

The problem with Steam is that every six months or so it just stops working and the launcher won't even open up. I can't get it fixed short of deleting the Steam folder and reinstalling everything. It takes 10 hours to download TF2 over steam. :/

this is because your screwing around with torrented steam games, the solution is either to stop, or to delete client.blob every time you launch steam.

Delete clientregistry.blob, and also save your folders. You can just move your games back into your Steam folder and they'll be fine.

Screwing around? You mean launching TF2 via Steam and playing the normal way?

Breotan, you've gotta have something else going on with your computer. I've had Steam installed for literally years. I don't have issues with it.

Nope. Basically when they put out a new patch like they did around a month ago, steam just stops working. I mean, the launcher stops working. Can't get to the online store, community, or anything, much less even get to a game.

I've had steam just randomly break utterly, twice (since Half-Life 2 launched). All I did was move my steamapps folder elsewhere, uninstall, reinstall, move back the steamapps folder, and recheck. Tedious but not as time consuming as full blown reinstalls.

I've had lots of other very minor issues over the years. Sometimes the friends list wouldn't display. Once steam guard prompted for a new computer code every single login. Once it was stuck in offline mode. All those were fixed by deleting various blobs. I don't find steam to be especially buggy, but it's not like it's utterly flawless either. No software really is. There are almost 70 million google results for "Steam won't launch", so I hazard to say your mileage may vary.

Bewteen DoW (and its expansions) and DoWII (and its expansions), what would be the best one to try to see how I like it?

The sink.

I got DoW Gold, Dark Crusade, and DoW 2: Retribution for $23. Not bad! (And I can't even run DoW 2 yet...)

Steam breaks at random all by itself.

You don't even have to move folders around. Delete all the files in the base Steam directory, leaving all the subdirectories and steam.exe. Run steam.exe and it will repair all the client files. You game library will remain untouched.

How comfortable are you with strategy games? For random skirmishes and a larger scale (if less tactically rich) game, Dawn of War 1 is your best bet. For faster paced gameplay, smaller, more tactical scale, and a far better multiplayer game, play DoW2. If you want an RPG/RTS hybrid single player campaign, the DoW2 and DoW2: Chaos Rising campaigns are excellent. If you want a Risk-style campaign of interlinked skirmishes (mostly just generic fights against the AI) Dawn of War: Dark Crusade is for you. The campaigns in DoW vanilla and Winter Assault are decent, and the campaign in DoW2: Retribution is mediocre, but has elements of story from every Dawn of War game if you play the campaign as Space Marines, which is nice if you care.

Honestly, they're all solid games with their ups and downs and I recommend them all.

You'd have to try them both because they're different genre. DOW1 and it's expansions are real-time strategy games, and DOW2 and it's variants are real-time tacticals.

How don't you know what Steam is? Even if you're tangentially familiar with video games, you should know what it is.

Any reason to pick up DoW2 and Chaos Rising, or are you safe to just skip ahead to Retribution? I don't care about the campaigns in DoW2 and Chaos Rising, but I know that DoW1 gated multiplayer content if you didn't have earlier expansions to the game.

Retribution is stand alone

If you want Multi player, get Ret

Why?

DoW2+Chaos rising uses GFWL
Ret skips through that and just uses steam. Two completely different systems
