I've decided to keep this up as it gives me a little bit of mental pressure for my current projects. Not a lot, I'll admit, but I probably need all the pressure I can get because I'm lazy at heart.

The Ork Tater Titan project starts in this post.
Finished Titan
Daemon Army stuff.

=======================================================================

It's starting to get to the stage where this thread is getting on the long side. So here's just an idea of the project as it currently stands - it will help add some interesting perspective to the WiP stuff as you move through it I think/hope

=======================================================================

Greetings.

I have an open admission: I am not that good at many of the hobby aspects of the game.

I don't hate painting (though I do have to work myself up to it, usually) I take forever at it, and my results seem to be, at best, in the acceptable range (also known as - not laughed off the table).
I've been painting for a long while - I still end up flabbergasted by newer players managing "complex" tasks like...y'know, making their reds look any good at all. Don't even get me started on my whites and yellows.
I've never owned milliput, or green stuff, or green put, or anything else of that sort.
The idea of modeling with it scares me.
I basically understand that Blue tack, or blue stuff, or whatever the fug is sorta like the green stuff...only weaker...and people actually use it t 'test' things - that blows my mind. I just glue and hope usually.
With super glue - plastic glue scares me.

Let's see, what else...I use toenail clippers (and attached file) instead of snips or any official modeling clipper (or file)
I often just twist things off the sprue with my bare hands...and I play Deldar.
I've occasionally tried to remove flash and mould lines when they're really bad...usually I don't do that well at it.
My idea of converting a model is kitbashing. Nothing less, and certainly nothing more.

That all said - I LOVE seeing scratchbuilds and reading about them and seeing them on the tabletop, and I want to do some of my own. So what this blog is going to be is the showcase of a player who is really not good at modeling or any sort of craft stuff, and to (hopefully) show that even without talent someone can end up with a (hopefully) passable model when it's all said and done.

This whole project will be done with very few quality tools I suspect - so for those following at home, hopefully you can do the same (or better - probably much better)

So, what is it I want to do? Well - I've been playing Orks a bit in Apoc games, and have found myself partial to the Klawstompa. That is a sexy beast of a Titan even if it can be gunned apart in a few seconds. So, I want to build one, and I don't want to have to buy the Stompa kit (well - I want the Stompa kit, but funds are tight right now so I don't see that happening for some time yet. Therefore, I want to do something that will look good and Orky while costing me very little.

Enter the Tater Titan.

For those of you not familiar, the Tater Titan is an idea I do believe started by Iron Dog Studios when they made a Tater Titan (I, at least, think he was the first) Now, if you do any sort of search for Tater Titan you can find dozens of them out there. They are all absolutely beautiful models that I could never manage to duplicate in a million years. That said, i feel like I want to try, and I suspect if I trim some of the harder stuff out maybe I can do something that is similar but easier to do and still looks pretty good. (plus, if I'm lucky, a lot of the non-Internet savy players in my area will think I came up with the idea myself and laud me as brilliant - I could handle that )

So, let's see how she flies, Orville;

I apologize in advance for the color - I gakked my white balance when taking these, clearly.

Initial buy in was about $3 from Goodwill for a Mr. Potato Head (I did have to trawl the local thrift stores for about a month before I found one - that said, I think Goodwill and its ilk are optimal places to find easy to use modeling bitz - you can buy a Potato Head brand new from Wal Mart for around $9-10 though).

Here's the main body.
Drilled in some holes to give me an idea where I wanted the eyes. In retrospect I may have put the Gob on lower than I should have but...meh. We'll figure that out later and muddle through it.

As you can see, I've already gone to work on the 'Gob' for my boy. It is a bent piece of cardboard (oddly enough, taken from cutting up leftover cardboard 'sprue' from the old Necromunda set - cardboard that I've literally been saving for 18 years - huzzah, it finally has a purpose!
You can also see the support I slipped in behind it - even with super glue I was pretty convinced the Gob would fall apart - so I slid a piece of sprue behind it and lsathered in some more super glue to help give it support and a better anchor to be held in place.

And, yes, much like the original, I am totally using that hat.

This is the start of one of the arms - it's a couple of sawed up pieces of some connectible toy set for kids. Got a huge bag of them for around $10 and they included some great bitz (and even the basis of my next Ork project after this one, huzzah!) Basically it's a wheel with a piece from a crane glued onto it. The shoulder needs to be jointed looking, hence the wheel, and with this one single piece I also get another joint at the 'elbow' so I don't need to try to model that myself (whew!)

Out of focus, but what you're looking at here is the internal support for that arm - basically just a piece of sprue wedged and glued into the hole so I can insert it into the already existing arm hole in the Potato Head. Hopefully this psuedo pin will help me support the weight of the arm via liberal uses of super glue slathered on the inside.

The feet - I do have a hobby saw and literally just sawed down the middle to separate them.
I left the peg on the one foot because I'm planning to use the peg and the 'foot slot' on the bottom of the Mr. Potato Head - the idea of trying to build/craft legs with knees and all that horrifies me and seems really hard.

A Closer look at the saw job.

Okay, so the bottom of the feet are concave, so I need to recreate a bottom (in retrospect - since one foot will be planted on the ground I didn't need to do this for both feet and gave myself extra work - derp!)
What I did was trace them on posterboard and hacked them out. I then slopped on some paint to the poster board so when I spray paint this thing for a base coat later the feet won't melt (I am soooo clever).
Later these will get some extra attention and layering from cardboard/plasticard or something to help hide the missing bit of the foot and also make them look more orky and stompy.
Also planning to do something to the bottom of the foot that will be raised - I like the idea of cleats but may just wimp out and make metal banding like IronDog Studios did to there stompa.

-------------------------

Up next I need to add some fangs to the Gob, should be easy.
I think I want to track down one of the Warhammer Fantasy squished Gobbos from the Giant figure (should be funny to put under the Tater's foot or smooshed on to the foot itself like a piece of gum.)
I can also show you some of the work I've done on the claws (also known as - just ripping off pieces from toys and calling them claws)
Also need to figure out the eyes and the other arm assembly.

Almost 25 views a day?
Thanks!

Okay, so a bit more work has been done to my Stompa Spud;

Here we see two things happening.

1. I made an eyeport. There are probably lots of very clever ways to do this - I am certain I have none of the right tools that invariably involve the word dremel. What I did (and I kid you not) was take the hobby drill and made an outline of the port in lots of little drill holes, then I took a knife (pocket knife variety) and finished gouging it out. After that I went over it a few times with my (nail clipper) file to smooth it down. I like it currently though I'm debating whether or not to make it bigger - if it's bigger I could have an Ork commander yelling out of it or an inquisitive grot doing something there - this will be debated.

2. I added tusks to the Gob - again, it's all cardboard leftover bits from Necromunda building sprues. I really do need to puzzle out something simple to do rivets of some sort or another on them (I'm thinking square cuts of plasticard - though the idea of how to glue them where I want them fills me with dread) Overall though, I'm liking the way the Gob is turning out now.

Also did some work on his booty.

Front of the boot - that's a piece of Necromunda cardboard in front and the top/back portion is plasticard. As we move forward I'm thinking I'm going to add some kickin' spikes to the front of the foot whot to aid in da stompin'.

Back of the booty and some work done to cover up my hack-job of separating the feet. This is two layers of plasticard, and was really simple to do and I think will look pretty decent by the time I add a few grubbinz and paint it up. It's interesting having to try to visualize things with completed paintjobs so you can tell what is or isn't working - it's human nature to see the color differences and decide things don't match.

Possible solution for second arm - it's an old marker that was chopped up and also a random bit of plastic doo-dad I found laying around somewhere (I think in a parking lot of Home Depot...I have a habit of collecting random bits of trash and saving them for modeling use later - yeah, that's maybe the bit of the hobby I'm most sensitive about not telling friends about )

Courtesy of that bag of toys I mentioned last post - here's my first claw sitting on its arm assembly. I think I'll end up beefing up the arm with some other bits of pens/markers/wires/plastic or whatnot, as it looks a touch weedy next to the claw - but this bit was almost 100% of the reason I bought that bag of toys, I knew it'd work great as a Titan CCW. I was originally looking to get a toy steam shovel or something to use as the claw, but I'm happy with this.

You can also see the remains of the toy that supplied the first shoulder joint - I may use it for the second joint as well.

Also, it's spring jointed, so when doing batreps I can have it grabbing onto enemy models for lulz.

Test shoulder pad option - a cut up spray can top.
I figure it's either that or trying to build something out of sprue/cardboard.
I'm not sure if I like the look of it or not, I do like the broadness as it will let me mount observation towers/grot missiles/whatnot up there, but at the same time I'm not sure if it looks right or not - this may take some debate.

Still have to beef up the other foot (uf da!) but here's a general idea of the pose I'm going for, I want it to look wild and like it has to keep moving or it's likely to just topple over, once you have two claws whirling around on the thing plus assorted grots and platforms it should look appropriately hilarious.

Till next time;

Still got to beef up other foot.
Figure out shoulderpad situation.
Also, beef up semi completed arm (maybe attach?)
Puzzle out second arm's claw.

Haven't even gotten close to puzzling out the belly gun yet, I need to start at least thinking about what I'll do for a flamebeltcha. Might be smart of me to make it a touch heavy, just to help balance the thing though.

Well, we may need to knock some cobwebs out of here, but I'm back to work on this sucker. I stopped work just because I was out of town for about 8 moths (an actually decent excuse, huzzah!) however with my 40k gang looking to do some more fully painted batreps in our Counter Assault on Saios campaign, I figured maybe I should try to get this thing up and going again asap.

So this is the setup for the flamebelcha...

As usual, Thor lacks the appropriate tools to do the job. I'm sure there's some sort of dremel or saw or something else that would make this quite easy. I don't have one.. Such is life.
I basically just drew a rough rectangle on the belly (you can still see some of the marker lines there if you squint) and then went to work with my hand drill. (pin vise, right? I think that's the proper name). So I just drilled around it, and I'll do a bit more drilling, and then I'll saw at it with a razorblade, pop it out, and smooth the edges down with a file. It's a little uneven, but...hey, it's Orky.

Here's a better idea of what that will look like on the model. I'll have the flamebelcha poking out of the hatch...I may do some sort of firing hole in order to have an Ork/Gretchin peering out...I'm not sure. Maybe not.

The other big advance of the day is stompin' feet!

With some propah jabby bits for when you're kickin' things.
Again, all pretty basic stuff. Some plasticard and regular cardboard for the bulking out of the feet and some snipped up sprue for the spikes.

Since one foot will be in the air it needs a 'bottom'. I blatantly copied the idea from Irondog Studios (home of, I believe, the original and greatest Tater Titan) and gave it some treads. The treads were simply cut up from cardboard sprue from some old GW cardboard buildings and glued down in semi-regular strips.

Just some action shots of the in-place claw. I've got a similar rig for the other arm as well, I just need to glue it together.
I have also cannibalized some.wire and other bits to help bulk out the arm and make it more menacing.

To do next

Finish up the arms?
I do need to really settle on some shoulderpads soon, because those should go in at about the same time.
I've also got most of the bits for Grot Rokkits, I should put those together too.
Also, the engine/smokestack in the back - need to come up with an idea for it.

Hopefully more updates this month, I am only working sporadically, so I should be able to get some done, yeah?

Okay, so the Tater Titan has seen some exciting new additions, let's consider them, shall we?

Tater Titan lives!

Okay, the little thing first - as shown last time I was working on the belly gun and here is the finished port. I'm snagging a bit from the battlewagon to use as the gun, played around with the lobba too but it just looked a little weedy so the big gun is the likely winner. I'll admit I'd *rather* have a giant skorcha looking thing here, but...hell short of just hunting down some lucky bitz I don't know how I'd do it. I think this sucker will still look good and rather doubt anyone playing Apoc with me is going to whine that it's a little un-wysiwig.

The border will get some sprue put in as edging to help beef it out.

Arms are being attached now, looking decently beefy too. The bits are mostly the aforementioned toys along with some old random wire scraps that I snagged from soundstage floors after the electiricans had rigged in some practicals.

Also put on a power pack for him - the "logic" is that it's a big steam engine or something. I intend to cut in a port and have a pipe running out of it, the top will be a lookout tower for ork passengers/grot rokkits.

One of the toughest things I've tried to do - cutting up a plastic cup so that it can line up with the concave surface of a potato-head figure.
Egads!
This obviously involved math and better cutting skills than 'eyeballing it'

My solution was to add in some cardboard joints for riveting, and I'll add in more plates of cardboard/plasticard or maybe some milliput to fill the gap.
I hate that gap...

For things I don't hate - SIZA KOMPARRISSON!

My little partially painted lad is looking mighty weedy next to the Klawtater.
Also gives you a bit of an inner view of my system for helping to support the arms (and, yeah, all those white clouding stains from super glue...it's because a lot of super glue has been spritzed into places.)

Lookit 'im, 'e only comes up to da ankle!

Also - eye piece! I'm debating maybe having a shoota coming out of the eye...but then again, I still have no idea what will be in the eye-port either...so maybe a shoota there? Or a yelling grot? I dunno. Something...

Here's one of me ladz showing off the lookie-tower. I'm going to ring it in bits of chopped up Popsicle sticks just like you see here...only, y'know, more all the way around. Then a couple of ladz or some Grot bombz or something will be modeled into the tower as well.

The other arm was attached for a little while...but kinda popped off really easy. I'm actually (gasp) planning to get some 2 part epoxy (Milliput) and use that to help lash the arm in place. It should be an interesting adventure for me as it will be my first outing into using milliput, but that arm needs the extra strength.

So, to do list;

Attach 2nd arm again.
Fill in gaps on steam engine.
Exhaust pipe for steam engine.
Finish up watch tower.
Really is time I started working on some Grot Bomb conversions...
Get belly rigged up and attach foot - may need to wait till I'm done securing up the arms though.

I see people keep viewing this, and that does help inspire me to slug on
Even if you guys never offer helpful suggestions

But that's okay, because I actually solved a few minor glitches and made some really propah progress on this thing, so let's see where we're at!

Oi! You gits talkin' bout me!?!

That's right, Thor managed to get that other arm attached! And, oh wow, yes, it involved Milliput (egads, so much for my record of always begging other people to do it for me!)

I'll go out on a limp and guess this could look prettier if I knew what the hell I was doing.
I'll probably hide it under a shoulder pad or put sort of an 'endcap' item on it. (a tire, a widget to make it look more mechy, ect) I did actually use some water and a modeling tool to smooth it out as much as it is
Still, important thing is - the arm is attached and secure, moreso than what superglue would have managed alone.

Just a reminder of sense of scale here, the KlawTater will be appropriately 'uge on the table.

I also finished off the fencing around the top of the boiler engine.

Boys with more guts than brains (aka - all of them) can lurk back here to dakka while they stomp. I'm planning to put a hatch here, and also rig up an ork with big shoota to represent the rear arc weapon.
Maybe some other stuff as the mood strikes me.

Now for something I'm excited about that I'm not sure has been clear thus far in the WIP pictures.

Raaaargh! Take dat ya pansies!

Yup, the klaws are operational, and will be used to grab stuff to pose for pictures as the KlawStompa romps across the board.

Weapon Destroyed takes on a whole new meaning...

Next he'll hurl this across the board at some other weedy gitz.

Less impressive, but still important - the flamebelcha is now up and operational. I think I may have been happier with something bigger, in retrospect, but this is not a bad win at all and will help orkify the vehicle without needing much extra work from me - ah, the sweet safety of just kitbashing

Not a final decision, just a thought - but some orky stuff needs to be happening on that head, and I'm not sure if I like Irondog's hat shoota setup or not...a bosspole with some trophies is definitely an option.
Now if only I had a random Warhound head laying around and could stick it on a Stompa sized bosspole...

Showing off my amazing Paint skillz - here's the begining of the first Grot rokkit - I may add a tail rudder too, but the basic gist is as you see it. Pilot, propeller blades, tacked on wings, and rocket = 2+ to hit.
I already have two in production, and will need to start on a 3rd - I suspect milliput will be my friend on finishing up this one too.

Also, partly to show off a very cheap eBay acquisition, and partly to answer some mewling fears of some local gamers (who went with the wimpy complaint about relative sizes - and chose to do this with someone who runs things that are both bigger and smaller than what the represent, and no matter which way I play it I get grumped at because of some perceived advantage... )

In any case STOMPA SIZE COMPARISON!

I'm just holding up the front plates of the official Stompa model here in about where I think they would be, add on a bit more for the non present head and we see that though the KlawTater is maybe a bit stunty, he is actually really quite close to the official height.

And here he is versus the bottom of the Stompa skirt - which I suspect is a pretty good representation of the relative "footprint" of the official Stompa model.
Again, back to front and side to side he's looking very much on par with the official model.

So, KlawStompa is big enough ta stomp - it is official!

Hopefully next time I'll have sorted the shoulderpads (gawds, I need to do those somehow) and will also have managed to add a few more grubbinz to the boiler engine (and also have plugged up those gaps).
Also on the docket - armor plating the body of the titan!

Till then.

Tater Titan lives!

Yup, still working on this, I just tend to keep putting it on hold for 6 month spans when I go working out of town. That said, I made some really nice progress on it today and suspect that I'm actually getting close to *gasp* painting it!

But let's see what we have going on here...

Here's the Titan as he stands today.

Over here we can see the beginning of what will be his armor plating. Basically some plasticard glued onto his sides. I'll pretty much cover all of the current spud with this, put some patches on his hat, and then call that job a good un. This is probably the toughest remaining part of the build.

Stompy foot is attached!
Yes, I finally bit the bullet and glued that sucker into place - I'm pretty happy with it.
I do have a flattened gobbo model that I intend to put on either the foot or onto the base...not sure yet which will be funnier, thoughts? Anyone? Bueller?

You can also see one of the glyph plates. I have a mountain of those things and will probably work another one or two into the build somewhere.

He also got a little porthole for his eye (still not sure if I'm going to stick a grot head there or no). Also some missiles and other shooty grubbinz.

Here's his boiler power source, you can see a nice handy ladder for the ladz to use to spring down and stab beakies from.

A bosspole, and also a smokestack for the boiler - after all, gotta release the pressure if the Boss demands you run constantly - and the Boss *always* wants ya runnin'!
You can also see another glance of the shoulder guard/pauldron and the rokkits there.

Oi! Shoot off a grot rokkit!

Yes, I finished my custom built grot rokkit. It is a few bits and pieces - let's see if I can run it down for you;
The propeller assembly is one of the old bike/trukk axle spikes (any spike would do, really) and the props themselves are just two small rectangles cut from plasticard. Are they uneven? Who cares! it's an Ork build.
The 'body' of the plane is a red crayola marker cap. The toughest part with that was carving out the cockpit.
The gretchin piolet is one of the old 2nd edition grots (of which I have ample - I think people use them on eBay in place of packing peanuts) sawed up by a plastic saw and wedged in place.
The wings are simply old Necromunda cardstock cut into rough wing shapes, and braced with a under support bar of the same material (I don't think I got a good picture of that, but trust me, it's there)
The exhaust is an odd random bit that is, I do believe, an endcap for an electric cable. I drilled a hole in th eback of it to insert the exhaust/support wire.
The exhaust is simply copper wire, wound up for strength, and glued in place - actually, as currently stands it's still a separate piece from the model and I can remove it from the hat if I want. I might glue it in place or leave it free standing fro transport and to allow me to remove it when I fire all my rokkits. I dunno which I'll go with yet. Probably depends how solid it remains, I think I'd like to leave it separate

.
Waaaagh, da Orks!
Soon, soon it will be ready for the stompin'!

What's this, size comparison!?!
Can you imagine the value I'm giving you in this blog? Amazing stuff, really.
But, yes, here is a side-by-side compare and contrast.
The Tater Titan is a bit weedy in the height department, but not egregiously so. Heck, let's be honest, I'm probably still taller than the Armourcast one

Also, it's actually 'bigger' front to back due to it actually being posed in a dramatic and interesting fashion...not that I'm mocking GW...well...y'know, just a bit.

An overhead shot that is not as good as I'd like, but you can see that the 'footprint' of the Tater Titan is very much in line with the official model.

Are they fighting?
Or just giving each other TCCW high fives before storming off into Imperial lines?
Aw, heck, what's the difference?

I do still need to get some putty back into the gap around the boiler.
And get some Ork gunners into the tower on the back.
And finish armor plating it all up.
After that...I actually think I may be needing to get some spray primer and brushes ready

Further progress has been made.
Yes, I am dead serious about getting this thing done before I ship out again.

Armor plating and also passengers!

The sides are more plated up now, and also a gunner was added to the new shoulder pauldron/dakka platform.

Now we can dakka while we stomp!

A bit of work to help hide and breakup the bad lines from my shoddy work with the milliput.
Also, not really sure how well these pictures show it off, but now the gap (hated, hated gap...) has been filled in with milliput and looks pretty decent now. i also put a bottom onto the boiler.

I'm thinking I'm going to slap in a bunch of random extra boyz I have lying around to this tower, my goal is to have 4+ of them wedged in here for the visual effect.

I realized I never really showed off the prop of my supa rokkit very well, and I'm pretty proud of it, so here.

Also, let that be a lesson to all the gobbos - there is some serious stompin' goin' on 'ere, so mind yer 'eadz, hur, hur, hur!

It is interesting how with a lot of modeling projects it's those last few stages where things really start to look like what they're supposed to - I'm really happy it's looking so Orky now. For a long time it was just some cardboard teeth and a hat mocking me.

I am, I don't think I've ever undertaken an Ork themed project that wasn't fun.

If you start one up I will definitely follow the progress, Tater Titans are the new hip thing!

Well, if we get "flank march," I like your chances.

If we don't on the other hand, at least while he is pouring fire into Tater he won't be shooting at me.

So, the forces of Chaos would like to thank you in advance for taking one for the team.

No problem my frie- ...hey...waaaaait a minute.

That said, it will probably suffer the fate of all first time painted models on the table. You place it down, and then it is instantly killed and removed.

Whot's all this then?

Basecoat!

That's right, I finally bit the bullet and said to myself, self I sez, it's time to basecoat this bad boy.
It's currently drying as we speak, which means I could theoretically be putting paint on it as early as this evening...huzzah!

I wussed out on trying to do rivets - my Orks weld
That said, you can see the armor plating coating this baby.

The boiler room crow's nest is now also filled with the ladz, ready to get some krumpin' done.

Can't recall if I featured this before or not, but I have a little grot rokkit cluster on the shoulder there.

During painting the Grot yelling on the hat is going to have his face blackened up - sometimes pilots just won't wait for the 'all clear' signal, y'know?.

It is nice to blast it black because now the model finally is letting me see everything with the feeling of it being a complete item, without all the different colors and textures wanting to make me see them as seperate items. I think it 'came together rather nicely
Now let's hope I can paint it up nicely too.

Did the rough drybrushing for the metal base, took pics of the various stages. First a drybrush of Tin Bitz.

And then some Boltgun Metal.

Face to face with some progress.

I still have a few touchups to work.
I also need to Brazen Brass the boiler section.
Then I can start roughing in the colors of the Orcs, Gretchin, and what not.

I'm not sure really. Functionally I run a Freebooter army but I have multiple tribes within my army all working together for the boss.

Probably going to go Goff with it to some degree though, because it's a Klawstompa. I think the big shoulder pad with the rokkits will look really good with some checks on it. I should also figure out what I'm going to do ith the gob - as that's an obvious additional area to decorate.

I'm a slow painter at heart, but I have been making some headway on this bad boy.

I still need to do some nice touches on those rokkits - but other than that the shoulderpad job is being called a good un' (well...okay, I still intend to come and do some battle damage on it, but other than *that*)

I also had a lot of internal debate about what to do for the Gob - I looked online at a couple of (really amazing) other Stompa paintjobs and decided I liked the 'just paint 'em white 'dere teef' look. Went with some red on the lower part of the Gob because I want a bit of color on what will otherwise be a pretty dark Goff model.

Also looking to get my Orks looking Orky so I can get an idea of how much other color I may want.

Also the Grot - I am debating about some bloodstain and also some grime and dirt on him since he's probably been ground on a bit.
