I recently watched a few snippets from Axis Powers: Hetalia, and it was one of the funniest things I've seen for a long time. I haven't seen much (so far I've only seen a few clips on Youtube) but I do hope it's on DVD.

Anyway, who is your favourite character? Mine is either Italy, Russia or Britain, possibly followed by America for his sheer derpiness.

I like Sweden, Norway, Britain and Estonia best there. Although USA is perhaps the best.

Somewhere in south-central England.

It's the unfortunate result of the Japanese approach to teaching stuff through the medium of personifying things (nations,in this case) as cute cartoon characters.

Where does it defend Facism? Because Germany and Italy are partial facist like their were in reality?

Umm, OK, I didn't mean to start an argument over this. But seriously, how does it defend fascism? It doesn't really defend anything-it mercilessly takes the mickey out of everything, including itself ("these drawings are even worse than our normal animation!"). Heck, even Japan is a caricature, with his laughable attempts to disguise his fondness for 2D erotica.

And Korea was taken out of the series after complaints from South Korean TV networks (which is hardly surprising as South Korea complains about everything). In any case, Korea was supposed to be male.

That's the issue. The personification of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan as flawed but well-meaning pals is very misleading as to the actual atrocities and systematic oppression.

Perhaps if Germany was shown to have sado-masochistic tendencies by cutting off his own body parts and those of others (France, Italy, Poland, etc, etc)? Perhaps if Japan was shown forcing Burma to work to death building a railway? (And similar things with regard to the Allies, of course.)

I guess that wouldn't be charmingly comical. Then again, perhaps this simply isn't a good way to present politics and history.

Then perhaps defend is the wrong word. 'Trivialises' and 'obfuscates' might be more appropriate, if I understand what you're saying Manchu.

Sure, htj. But what is the overall effect? If we set aside all the nasty, non-cute parts then fascism isn't so bad, is it? It's just a matter of being a little gruff -- which is totally made up by being conscientious and hardworking.

Hetalia is more a satire than an accurate representation of history, and is partially aimed at children, so they were limited as to what they could actually show interms of violence. And let's face it, if they had made the axis characters closer to their historical counterparts, they would have had complaints that it was too violent.

It's just as bad to excuse fascism to adults as it is to children. This is an especially pressing issue in Japan.

Also, it was made in Japan, and hence will show pro-Japanese bias. If it had been made in America then it probably would have shown pro-US bias, for example, toning down any references to the Vietnam war.

If a show came on in this country excusing American atrocities in Vietnam, I'd be just as critical. And I am willing to bet any amount of money that I'd be far from alone in that.

Hmm, I'm going to have to check this show out for myself. It raises some interesting questions.

I'm sure you would, but that isn't my point. The point is that no matter what country it had been made in, there would be bias towards the country of origin. The nationalistic bias would have been much worse if it had been made in Korea, for example.

The issue is not that Japan is shown in a relatively favorable light.

Really? Sorry, it came across that way. However I strongly doubt the series was supposed to be offensive.

It couldn't have come across that way. I said the show excused fascism and then talked about Germany as well as Japan.

I don't think the show is supposed to be offensive, either. I think the show reflects a serious misunderstanding of history and politics and some very serious moral problems.

Right...

I feel my thread has been jacked. Why can't I post anything without it starting WW3? This started as an innocent discussion about a cartoon, and it's turned into a moral debate.

Maybe because the show is not innocent?

The storyline doesn't always take place in WW2, and Germany is shown as a complete jerk anyway. So, no, you are incorrect.

The internet produced something that appears to some to be in poor taste. Nothing new here

That said, I don't think the series is that bad. Sometimes its actually quite hilarious.
