Sony is gearing up for their answer to Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers with their upcoming title Playstation All Stars. Cash In Ripoff or legitimate competition? You decide

Current roster: Sweet Tooth, Parappa the Rapper, Fat Princess, Sly Cooper, Helgast dude, Kratos

Interesting though that unlike SSB, this game mixes up the stages (a giant demon fighting the Pattapon tribe for example)

I'd like to point out none of those characters are anywhere near as iconic as Nintendo's. Therefore, Sony, I have lost my lack of respect for you and now just pity you

Gotta agree. This looks like they're grasping at feathers to try to make wings as they fall off a building. SONY, you've earned this: .

Complete ripoff. I don't think sony has too many characters that are as iconic as Nintendo's, but then again most of the characters in Super Smash Brothers were not very iconic either. However Nintendo has quite a few that are.

The only thing I can think of that will help it, is that Super Smash Brothers really isn't about the iconic characters. My sister in law who is 16 likes Link in Super Smash brothers but has no idea who he is. The same goes for Starfox and a bunch more. She likes the game but doesn't play it because of the roster.

Yea problem with PS is that PS3 HAS NO GAMES

But there is truth, even taking into account if this commercial was a "teaser" for the game, several characters arent even exclusives like Snake and Enzio

As much as I love Parappa the Rapper, this is a sad, sad thing.

Old meme from the PS3's launch where it had no games and was really just a nice Blu Ray player I believe. Either that or some joke about the games being fancy movies.

The joke is that while the Nintendo and Microsoft systems have largely well known flagship titles, the Sony systems have historically lacked iconic franchises unique to themselves. Microsoft has Halo and Gears of War, Nintendo has its planthora of titles, Sony has...

That's the joke anyway. It makes some sense.

Sony had Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Ratchet, Jak, and several others, until they killed and or lost them to Microsoft.

The problem is most of Sony's iconic characters don't really have franchises to speak of. Ratchet & Clank are still alive and kicking with All 4 One out now, and Sly Cooper is about to have a bit of a revival with Sly 4, but that's about it. Jak and Daxter seems to be slowly dying off with Naughty Dog focused on Uncharted and Spyro and Crash aren't exactly Playstation exclusive games anymore. Compare that with Nintendo's cast of characters - Mario has had dozens of games centered on him, Samus has an entire franchise that's still going, Sonic's had a long and heartbreaking history of games, Link and Zelda have had dozens of games and are still going strong...

Just saying, the most games any of Sony's iconic characters that I can think of has runs at 18 with Crash Bandicoot (I don't know many others, to be honest). Mario alone has appeared in over two hundred titles (according to Wikipedia). Sony has a lot of fantastic games, but not a whole lot of truly memorable and long-lived franchises. I can name a bunch that have 3-5 games, but nothing that comes close to Crash or Spyro, neither of which are exclusive to Sony anymore.

Yeah but honestly, how many of those games are Mario Golf, Mario At the Olympics, and Mike Tyson's Punch Out?

What I was trying to say in a sentence.

How many kids today, are even going to know who Crash Bandicoot is? You have to be from the 90's to know that. Parapa the Rapper is even more obscure these days. There's no franchise that when I say 'Sony' will immediately invoke a near universal icon the likes of Mario or Master Chief.

Sweet Tooth, Kratos, and the Helghast are about as close as they get to Mario and Master Cheif, due to relevance before and now, but even then, not anywhere near.

Sony's roster of mascots lacks nostalgia, which is what keeps Nintendo's characters alive. There was a time when Sony could have pulled this off with Kratos, Sly Cooper, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot, pieces of the Twisted Metal cast, Ico, and possibly a few third party near-exclusives like the characters from Tekken, Final Fantasy or Devil May Cry. Nowadays, Sony is no longer a company that develops crossover IPs. They have a decent stable of franchises that consistently turn in excellent games, but they aren't in a position to mine those properties for iconic mascot characters.

I'll give the demo of this game a shot and go from there. As someone who has no fondness for Nintendo, I wouldn't mind seeing a Melee style game on a console that I actually own.

Could always be worse, it could be as bad as Battle Orchestra was when it seemingly tried to be like SSB.

At least the trailer was classy enough for Justice.

Technically they have a LBP stage, but yes I would be very surprised if Sackboy does not become a playable character.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I see a potential competitor, this is more like the first Super Smash Brothers instead of Melee or Brawl but it does have some sort of potential.

When it comes to iconic figures of course kids remember Mario and Master Chief, they keep putting games out with the same exact characters. Nintendo has been pumping out Mario since 1981, if they had stopped then nobody would remember him but they keep making and remaking Mario games. Super Mario 64 DS is one example, its a Nintendo 64 game they remade for the DS. Well look at the "dream roster" for Microsoft according to Slarg.

Parappa the Rappa is iconic for being one of the original rhythm games, Sweet Tooth is probably one of the most iconic figures for Sony thanks to Twisted Metal, and Kratos is iconic thanks to being the original emo kid with big weapons in fact he's probably the inspiration for Dom from Gears of War. Then Sly Cooper was one of the first Assassin's Creeds, hiding from guards in a barrel and somewhat free-running.

I do agree that if sackboy isn't in it then they done messed up. Same with Jak and Daxter.
