So today I took a trip at the invite of our dear Cyporiean to a FLGS ("local" is a relative term to DeLand) to catch some Brushfire demos. I had already ordered and received the rulebook so I had a good idea on the rules. However reading a rulebook does not give you any real idea of how the game plays.
It plays great! It's really quick to pick up on if you've read the quick start rules. The attack/defend system is refreshing and new to me, and makes for some very tense and exciting gameplay. No really, exciting.
I picked up some Aquitar stuffs. Mole Tactician, 3 badgers (apparently OOP ones), and weasel fusileers. I think next I'll be getting some mongoose legionaires. I really wanna try out a trapper + Fusileer horde.
All in all, totally psyched for this game.
On a related note: Dear DCMs hiding in your sooper seekrit brushfire thread, come out and let's talk about this game. Slum it with Zygrot for a while, you won't regret it!

Yes, I suppose we should take over this subforum, instead!!
Hoping to get in my second non-demo game against Gymnogyps this weekend if timing works out.

I've always wondered how/why there was no Brushfire discussion in this forum. Then I found out all the cool kids were doing it in the alley.
Soon as my girl gets her Axony stuffs, we're on our way to non-demo games. Kitting out heroes is gonna be fun.
So what sort of resource/hero levels do people play. Like, what kind of ratio to resource:hero, or about how many resources per hero level? Seems like playing level 4/5 heroes in a 25-30 pt game would be, well, not so fun. With what I have today I'm already rocking at least 55 points. So 3 hero levels at 50-60 pts?
Cyporiean mentioned a 150pt tournament. Holy crapola.

Hey!
Nice to put an avatar to the face today (I was the guy in the red TKE shirt)
As to your hero level question, you can play any level with any amount of resources. So like today we could have been playing 25 resources with a hero level of five.
I tend to want to play hlvl 5 games so I can play Moleon instead of just a regular mole tactician.

Yeah, the whole Hlvl to resource ratio is really up to you, but we usually play with 5 Hlvl's for every 50-100 points. That may change in the future, though. Personally, I'd love to field a level 5 Monitor of the Sands and a level 2 (at least!) Vizier in my Scyzantines for all the buffed-up goodness they give my troops at around 100-150 resources.
I'm glad to hear that you had a good time finally playing it! Consider me subscribed here!

The 'Recommended' game size depends on which of us you talk to: Matt recommends 100 Resources, I recommend 200 Resources. Keeping in mind that X Resources is XFD/XLR/XGD
Once you get familiar with things 3 Hero Levels per 100 Resources or 5 per 200 resources is pretty good.
Additionally, Matt wrote up some example army lists here.

And see (for discussion's sake - I'm not arguing with Em!), I think 3 Hero Levels per 50 Resources is about right, but I also like "hero-hammer" style play with potent characters leading bands of warriors. So really, it's about what you think feels right since there's no FOC or limits on what levels have to go together.
The warbands play style is one that I'd love to have a run in. Em, we need to start a once-a-month BF league.

Oh hell yes!
I think that's a cool thing about Brushfire, the flexibility in army styles. With the opposed rolls/crit way of throwing dice even an epic hero can be taken out, if slowly, by grunts.
I'm gonna start assembling tonight, I think. Needed to grab more milliput from hobby lobby. About the only way I know how to assemble metal models. The epaulets on the mole tactician are a little rough, but should be very easy to repair with a little milliput filler.

Yes! And whoever it is that's playing here in Jax - the guys that showed up at the tournament at Borderlands. Want to do a warbands campaign, using the big map to move forces around, accruing resources and develop territories? Or one-on-one, set point level tournament style play?

The last game that Emily and I played, it came down to my Monitor against one of her otters and while I had a significant advantage in ability to kill, all she needed was a crit or a lucky hit to win. Alas, she did not roll that lucky 9 or 10 and the coldbloods won the day, but it still had me sweating!

Can't it be both?
So I'm learning why you guys resculpted the badger at claws as I type this. The left arm is a bit knobby, but I'm making it work. Mole is assembled and the base sculpted. Nice easy milliput cobblestone.
All the models so far have been very clean. Not a lot in the way of mould lines, etc.
So ready to paint these!

Yeah, we could make a simple hex map campaign and go around collecting resources and what not. Likely couldn't start until after Gencon though.
As for the B@C, the new one features multiple heads, and more pose-able arms.. and is cheaper to produce allowing us to sell 5 for what we used to sell 3 for in a box.
Make sure to post pics when you start painting

I wish we were local to you guys down there in Florida. A campaign would be really fun. We are begin to grow here in MD but aren't there quite yet.
I was playing around with some list building for the Adepticon tourney... I really need to focus on one faction and start learning it. I'm leaning either Rigenguo or Axony, but am not 100% yet. I also acquired some trebuchets for super dirty cheap (D&D minis or something like that), so if those work I'll be golden!

I had the same problem with my newer badgers... I ended up just clipping the tabs, laying down some green stuff and gluing the feet to the gs.
No offense to Cy and OTL, but the badgers are probably my favorite unit, but I hate their sculpt...

I've got the old version. The body/legs/head are a single piece. That's beautiful. The arms don't quit fit in the armpit joints, but with a bit of milliput they look fine. Of course, there is the block of pewter that is part of the model at the feet, but that's a minor issue. Despite the issues, I like the older sculpt a bit more I think. The newer ones are more posable but I like the armor plates all over the old sculpt a lot.

Painting has begun! Primed one carefully prepared badger and mole tactician. Painted the base for the mole and did the whites on the mole and badger. I prime grey, so 4-5 thin coats of vallejo white look sharp.
These are gonna be a lot of fun to paint! The badger is inspiring. The descriptions of badgers make me think of armored bears, specifically Iorek, from His Dark Materials. So the badgers I'm gonna paint up as a bit worn, dirty, and muddy. Some down on his luck, cast aside used up soldier trying to make his way in the world. Think hobo Rambo here.

Shoot Them In The Head.
Also, Chaingun's Attack #s are determined by the models in a squad. If you don't activate as a squad, you'll have less attacks thrown at you overall.

Don't the chain gunners get a charge reaction with their gun, or was that something written out after the playtest I had with Pedro? Those poor badgers never knew what hit them...
On the plus side, watching 6 Gophers chain reaction themselves along with a good chunk of the opposing force was fun to watch.

I miss Playtest Gophers.. so hilariously dangerous to field.
Chipmunk's get the same Charge Reactions as everyone else, so if they've activated they aren't going to shoot at anything.
