It confuses me why so many people these days get Imperium armies. Is it because they are the humans? Is it because people think there cooler? I DONT KNOW! And thats where you come in.

I do SM and IG because i find the fact they are human more realistic (despite being set in the 40k universe). The realism sort of helps me relate to them more i suppose?

I wish there were far far less players who played IOM.

GW should really do a better job of promoting VARIETY in its games.

WHFB is much much more blanced across the armies and thats most likely why I prefer it. Even the Empire dosent feel so overdone, and they are they are humans.

They are the most updated armies available and dont usually have to wait 10 plus years to get a new book

Well, just blindfold yourself at your local GW, spin around four to ten times then throw a baseball at hard as you can at wherever you're facing. Unless your store manager is about to be fired, the chances of breaking an IoM model are much higher than breaking the front window or hitting a person.

Half of GW's model range are imperial models, and at least three non-imperial codices are - justified or not - viewed as very bad: Tyranids, Daemons and CSM. Not mention that all of GW's so-called "marketing" focuses on space marines. Just look at the new rulebook and count the number of pages talking about or displaying the IoM. Then count the number of pages talking about and/or displaying xenos and/or chaos.

It's pretty hard to dodge the Imperium of Man

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

They are the high-selling poster for the game that draws people in, then they discover the flavorful xenos factions and move on to bigger and better things?

I don't know, i started xenos, and plan to at some point get a marine army of some sort, just for the fun of painting and assembling them.

No one "usually" has to wait 10 years, Dark Eldar, Sisters of Battle, Necrons and Daemonhunters aren't the norm. And that's not mentioning that half of those are IoM books.

´The Space Marine Armour is pretty awesome. It's also the most iconical piece of 40k.

A lot of people are drawn to 40k because of that armour. It stands to reason they want to collect it.

The Imperium of Man is the focal point of the setting that's why. Sure they have all these xenos races and such but really what they are is a plot device to reinforce the Imperium's struggle. Without the Imperium of man and the Space Marines 40k is just like any other drab sci fi miniatures game.

Marines are the all around starter force. It's not just the save, but I don't doubt it is a major part of it for a significant amount of marine players. Those 4s likely add to it as well. Then to some it is the image of these walking tanks saving the day.

I get to use an entire army of Terminators.

That is all the reason I need.

Imho n0t_u is right, the fact that they have been in all the STARTER boxes means that most people either have space marines or at the very least someone close to them does (sibling, friend, ect...)

2.5k SM
2.3k nids
2k CSM
all others: I only dream of them...for now. (also have some dusty empire and lizardmen out there somewhere).

So do Grey Knights, and they get 2-wound, psychic termies aswel

in Inquisitor, a Space Marine can take a krak grenade, pull out the pin, eat the grenade, throw the pin, and the thrown pin will actually kill a normal man, whereas the Space Marine won't even have indigestion. This has actually happened in a game. Hell, a marine can throw his bolt shells and do more damage than by shooting his boltgun

Yeah that is true. I get models with TH/SS and a cyclone missile launcher. This allows me to crush 2 wound terminators.

I got bored of my Sisters rolling like Marines, so I now play them as Grey Knight henchmen in carapace armour. So, yeah, I knocked their 3+s down to 4+s. Case in point, right here.

@OP: Because they are awesome.

marines are easy to paint at a beginer level over things like demons or chaos marines and WAY easier than tyranids, orks etc

i mean think about it. i can paint him blue, gold trim his armour, wash him with some oils, paint his weapon and eyes in less than 10 mintues and the model will look fine, another 5 will give me some chance to add highlights

Orks are just as easy TBH, paint green, wash with Badab Black (or whatever that new one's called). Fix eyes and metallics and you're done.

I guess being able to relate to a "human" army is part of the reason, though not the only one - at least for me. Most if not all of the Imperial forces are closely modeled about something in our real world history, and I love history. Naturally, I'm drawn towards those armies representing certain groups or events in our history that I find most interesting, be it the Sisters of Battle being "Jeanne d'Arc meets Knights Templar" (with a small dose of the Amazon legend) or the Valhallan Imperial Guard being "WWII Soviets in Space".

I would do Dark Eldar if they were less insane and more like Drow. I love Drow!
I also like Tau for their style and culture, but after the Sisters and the Imperial Guard they'd only come in 3rd.
