I need German sounding names for my Imperial fist squads to put on banners, scrolls etc.
Squads normally get named after the sergeant, right? Squad Karlheinz sounds pretty lame, though, so any ideas would be appreciated. I will ruthlessly steal any suggestions I like of course. Short names are better since they are easier to fit on stuff, but any inspiration is welcome.

Thanks guys.
The second link has some brilliant medieval german names. Haven't decided yet, but Bergtold is one of my favorites so far.

When I look for names, I love using this:
http://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/german
http://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/germanic-mythology
http://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/medieval
It also features not only the names themselves, but also their origin and meaning.
[edit] For Marine squads, remember to click the "masculine" on the right; you wouldn't want female names in there

There you have a list with more historic names. Most of these are no longer in use today but I think those are more suited for Space Marines than for Space Marines than Rüdiger or Karl Heinz
You can switch some letters for similar sounding ones like c and k or d and to let it look like there were numerous sound shifts between then and today.

1.) German miltary would never name units after the first name of the sergeant (Unteroffizier). At best they use the family name like Schultz, Müller, Meier, Schmidt, Steiner, etc.
2.) An alternative is to use letters like troop A, B, C but using the German spelling table (as used on radio transmissions). So you get A=Anton, B=Berta, C=Caesar, D=Dora, E=Emil, F=Friedrich etc ( http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buchstabiertafel ).
3.) To enhance the effect, use German unit names like Sturmtrupp (Assault Marines), Jägertrupp (Scouts), Panzergrenadiertrupp or Grenadiertrupp (Marines in Rhino), Stabsabteilung ( HQ). The Sergeant of a Trupp is called Truppführer.
So you get Sturmtrupp Anton or Jägertrupp Dora. You can't get much more German than that

I really like this idea. It does make for some pretty cool and authentic sounding squad names. Am I right in thinking that a normal tac squad is grenadiertrup? What are terminators called? Sturmterminatortrupp and Grenadierterminatortrupp?
The reason for starting off by saying it should be the sergeant's first name is that I thought that is what Spess Mahreenz did. I'm sure that that is the squad naming technique I have come across in several books. Squad Tarcus for example (I know that's a game, but you get the gist). I have no idea if that is how the fists do it, but since they follow Girlyman's book I would have thought they do the same thing. Can anyone clarify? Am I simply wrong? (Wouldn't be the first time)

As far as I see Space Marines only have one name. Their Space Marine name, just like monks or others do today too.
And most chapters call the squad this way.
Assault Terminators squad are indeed called Sturmterminatortrupp .

Where did you get this? I think it's a chapter-specific thing but the majority of the Astartes have 2 Names like we have today for example the Ultramarines and their successors, Raven Guard, Space Wolves and the Crimson Fists. Exceptions are the Blood Angels and the Black Templars and there are Chapters who have both (Salamanders and Imperial Fists).
