Would have posted this the other day, but was rather busy
Anyway, with Skyfall being released on October 26th and everbody else celebrating this event, it's high time dakka jumped on the bandwagon. This thread has probably been done a hundred times before, but this is the 50th anniversary. It's a special, peaceful time, like visiting your grandmother
Never let it be said that dakka does not have its finger on the cultural pulse
Anyway, In celebration, I've been blasting out most of the theme tunes and this weekend I'm planning on watching at least a dozen Bond films back to back.
Anybody else planning on doing the same or done it recently?
As for my favourite Bond, I voted for Moore. yeah, Sean is the godfather in most films he's in, but he struggles to compete with the Roger Moore eyebrow, plus Moore had Baron Samedi. The contest is over!
How do Americans view Bond? Do you secretly yearn to be Englishmen - the dream in all men's hearts!

I really like the recent ones, where they actually look fit like soldier/spy types would.
Brosnan was good, as is Craig.
Roger Moore didn't look like he could fight his way out of a paper bag.

Sean was before my time, never could get into his movies but that's probably also because I can't stand old movies and to me anything before like 1975 is old.
When I was little I used to like roger moore, because he was the current guy at the time, but I think Pierce Brosnan was my favorite. I always thought he'd make a perfect bond, even back when he was remmington steele.

I like the Bourne movies better generally.
1. Sean Connery would good, but was better outside of the first Bond film. I like the blond one now. He seems more like the cold predator Bond really was. However I too think he was better in Layer Cake.
2. Favorite films:
*Live and Let Die - only because of the song.
*From Russia with Love. Excellent bad guy.
*Casino Royale (new one).

HERESY!!! I kid... I only say that because I thoroughly enjoyed the books, and the movies were a train wreck compared to the original material, to each his own.
As for the OP, I voted Daniel Craig.
It was really a toss up between him and Connery, but ultimately the most recently seen =most recent memory, and thus the vote. Plus, I really dig the way Craig portrays Mr. Bond in the movies he's done. Not to mention getting to skydive with The Queen at the olympics

Sean Connery IS James Bond, hands down. I liked Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore as well, they both played excellent 007s and made some great movies.
Which brings us to Mr. Craig.
I'll confess I love the new Bond movies, they feel like the evolution of James Bond, a true reboot of the franchise, he's gone from a fist fighting tough and is starting to fully evolve into the suave, sophisticated, skilled marksman and all around elite spy we're familiar with. Brilliantly executed on the technical side of the house and extremely well acted. However... I feel like the bad guys over all are less quality in the Connery/Moore era, but I think Skyfall is going to change that drastically.

This is the most offensive thing I have ever read in the OT forum.
Connery played Bond like a poor civil servant, taking every advantage and perk he could on the company dime and pretending to be wealthy. This is the correct portrayal.
Moore played Bond like a bored, smug & entitled trust-fund child, or someone that has gotten wind of and started believing his own hype. Also, he wears a leisure suit in Live and Let Die.
Do_I_Not_Like_That wrote:How do Americans view Bond? Do you secretly yearn to be Englishmen - the dream in all men's hearts!
The Americans had a very ...odd... understanding of Bond. Case in point:
James Coburn as Flint
Dean Martin as Matt Helm

I think Brosnan, honestly.
Goldeneye is perhaps my favourite bond film. (Famke certainly helps there!!)
I am one of a very few who just doesn't warm to Daniel Craig's bond, I think he blunders about like a nightclub bouncer, the lack of decent gadgets, the loss of any humour and his wooden acting really turn me off his movies.

I like the Craig version, but my favourite was Lazenby. Hemore closely matched Bonds physical description and had that cruel edge most of the others lacked.
For all is suave Bond is not a nice man, Fleming portrays him as having a thinly veiled sadistic streak. Most Bonds were too clean for my liking, though I srtill liked them.
Its hard to pick a best actually, even if the traditional answer is Sean Connery, its easier to pick a worst, its a tie off between Roger Moore and Timothy Dalton.

I preferred Dalton as Bond.
Worst I think was Moore; he didn't fit Bond. I think he was trying to apply The Saint to James Bond, which is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Xenia is goddamn awesome... I don't think I can pick a favorite Bond girl out of them all though... so many amazing ones. Pierce Brosnan got some serious hotties in his movies that's for sure.
Favorite movie.... Goldeneye maybe? From Russia With Love is good... The Man With the Golden Gun... feck XD

From Russia With Love is probably my favourite Bond film and after last week it just got better.
Found out my girlfriend had never seen it so I sat down with her and plopped it in the dvd player. She happens to be from England and at the meal car scene
she immediately perks up and says that Bond should realize that the baddy is a villain because of his breach of etiquette. I start laughing but wont explain why and a couple of minutes later when Bond says the same thing she turns bright red.

I gotta say, it was probably James Bond that made me a man in terms of my movie selection.
My dad used to show me every one that aired on TV, and every month we'd rent a couple of the classics to watch. I went and saw every Bond movie after Goldeneye in theaters and loved every minute of them. Every year, we'd sit down and watch the Bond marathons that went on through October.
Favorite Bond has to be Pierce Brosnan - nothing against the Connery, but Brosnan was the guy I grew up with. Goldeneye was the first Bond movie I ever saw, and The World is Not Enough was the first I caught in theaters.
Truth be told, it's hard to pick a favorite movie, but honestly, I think I have to go with The World is Not Enough. Much as I love the classics, that one was the first one I saw in theaters, and it had what I've always thought to be one of the finest Bond games.

See, I'm with Frazzled on this one. Sorry chaps. I think Bond is by far the better character, but the Bourne films brought the spy-film genre up-to-date in a way which has meant that I can enjoy them much more. This is obviously a big influence on the Craig films, and I guess it's no coincidence that they are the ones I like. Saying that, the newest Bond films have made me think about revisiting some of the old ones, but in general I'm not a fan. Roger Moore, since those were the ones on TV when I was growing up.
Connery is great though, once I got around to watching them all, and all things considerd is probably better.
Brosnan has probably the best movie in Goldeneye, Lazenby is good, and Dalton... a bit duff, considering how good he's been in other things. Never seen the David Niven version, must get around to it.
Daniel Craig is godawful. This isn't necessarily his fault, and I've never watched The Sontom of Qualace or whatever the hell it's called after the horribleness of Casino Royale, so maybe it gets better, but he turned up after the (really good) Bourne movies had been sucessful and it really shows.
Making James Bond into a knockoff version of the Bourne movies is a terrible, terrible decision. Where are the cool gadgets? He had a defibrilator THAT DIDN'T EVEN WORK for gods sake.
Where's the really demented bad guy? Insane plot to rule and/or kill the entire world? Lunatic hencemen? Comedy? Where the hell is the FUN?
Anyone saying that it's a return to the old Connery style is just wrong. Dr No had a bad guy with metal hands who lived on a radioactive private island trying to disrupt space launches. He has blind assassin henchmen and tries to kill Bond with a tarantula. He eventually dies by falling into a vat of liquid nitrogen. It's completely insane. As Bond should be.

It's very good mate. One major caveat: Don't go into it expecting high-octane action - there are no explosions or car-chases. What you get instead is a series of subtly brilliant performances and a gripping story. True Story: After watching TTSS I applied to join MI6. Needless to say, I was wildly unsuccessful!

I think every Bond has had their moments both good and bad, so it is tough to pick a favorite. I prefer to look at it as favorite Bond movies. Here is my quick list:
1. From Russia with Love
2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
3. GoldenEye
4. Casino Royale
5. The Living Daylights
6. Thunderball
7. Live and Let Die
One of my favorite Bond moments is in Thunderball. A female assassin and her crew have chased Bond through a Carnivale parade, and wounded him. They can't just kill him out in public, so the Femal killer begins to dance with Bond while her thugs set up for a kill shot.
At the last moment, Bond spins his partner into the bulet, and uses her as a human shield. He covers up the wound and drags her to the side.
"My partner has to sit this one out. She's just dead."
The thugs flee, afraid after the death of their boss.

I generally classify the Bonds in term of pre-Brosnan, and post-Brosnan; with Brosnan being a sort of transition between the old approach to the films and the ones starring Craig. I think its really difficult to compare Craig's films to, say, Connery's because the character was interpreted so radically differently.
That said, I consider most of the really gadget-heavy Bond films to be awful, hence why I prefer the Connery movies when it comes to pre-Brosnan films.
Regarding Brosnan, his Bond is sort of a strange blend between the character as portrayed by earlier Bonds, and Craig; which makes sense. However, I think its unusual that each of his movies seemed to grow more gadget heavy, and therefore worse. His best was definitely Goldeneye.
The way Craig portrays the character is great, but he was hamstrung by poor script writing in Quantum of Solace. Of course, it also doesn't hurt that Eva Green is gorgeous.
