Hey there, My names Lewis, i go to sheridan college. Its a pretty well known place for art and film production students. Ill get to the point, ive written a short screenplay for a short warhammer 40000 fan film. the intention is to run a indigogo campaign to raise the funds in january till march. My question, is is there enough interest in a short film for this to be viable?

The film itself follows a group of Guardsmen exterminating the remenants of a tau squad when they discover a cultist group. they return to their homebase (a supply depot, they are tasked with defending) and request reinforcements. The group is met by a small group of guard veterans and a eccentric inquisitor and his retinue. Together they must figure out a way to hold of the chaos menace untill help arrives.

Its still rough, but features some cool things such as , Chaos Marines, Khorne Cultists, Psykers, Archo-Flaggelants, Guardsmen, Aegis Defense lines, Death cult assasins, tau and more

Obviously if we dont raise the money through indigogo it probably wont happen. This isnt something i want to half arse, im just looking for input from the 40k community on the upcoming short. Also as of now it is untitled.
if anyone comes up with a good title, and we use it. they will get credits in the film.

Regarding GWs copyright. Were in canada with the filming, so GW will retain copyright (unlike the german fiasco) we intend to past Copyright notices, and make it clear its a fan film.

Visually, we intend to go heavy on practical effects, thats our cup of tea, with cg composites for the sky (300 style), location wise, it takes place in a alien forested planet, foggy, dangerous. perfect for a good fight.

input? ill be posting some rough art in this thread as we go along

check out some early concepts

I approve of the story being about Guardsmen vs Tau for a change rather than Space Marines everywhere. Apart from being easier to identify with for the audience and allowing for a greater range of personalities, I assume it'll also easier to portray in comparison to a 7-feet tall superhuman. Then again, the Tau will be difficult to do as well, or are you looking at CGI?

I also like Calgar's "Against the Odds" suggestion. Sounds like the title of some old WW2 movie, which should fit right into the theme.
("The Chaos Tide" on the other hand feels a tad too generic/bland imho)

The psykers are i it briefly in a battle, throwing lightning around.

The story starts with tau but is about a Guard, Chaos Struggle. We are including a few marines, mainly to experiment with practical marine effects. If we can make good looking marines, then it could be a possibility in the future. for now, its just the one.

were hoping to raise about 12 grand through indigogo this winter, think that's attainable?

There is a french fan film called exterminatus having some final cgi polishing done as we speak. Pictures below.

They used an actual 7 foot cage-fighter as a marine. Don't know how they got the funding, but they did manage to raise enough to make it, so there should be enough interest to get yours off the ground.

Guard fighting chaos sounds a bit like a certain film I know, the name of which must not be uttered aloud lest it wakes the Ward. Suffice to say that film could have been awesome and had some great bits in it, but ultimately failed due to a fairly weak script and a very low budget, poorly choreographed and very boring fire-fight which seemed to go on forever. Basically men in plastic army helmets with toy guns pretending to shoot men dressed like Jawas, who duly fall over and pretend to die. As long as you avoid a similar sequence you could finally make the film the other one should have been. Not that I am in any way qualified to tell you how to make this as awesome as it deserves to be. Easy being a critic.

Isn't that the "Lord Inquisitor" one rems01 mentioned? Fairly sure that Exterminatus was a German project.
(whose acting looked or perhaps rather sounded fairly awkward - the voices were a bit too amateur'ish, possibly just because acting is actually a rather tough job that requires much talent and practice)

were intending to get some good actors, alot of the cast are young. but we have a large makeup support group ( thank god for students who wanna build up a portfolio) as for the other 40k film, were gonna try to avoid obscene over-sized shoulders. our one marine will be about 10 feet tall, were currently working on a suit/puppet rig

The lord inquisitor is an animated film currently in production. It is about an inquisitor and not about a dark angel space marine. Exterminatus is the film I described which is also currently in production and which is about a dark angel. The german film which was stopped by GW through legal action was ..............

Damnatus!

There, I've said it.German Copyright law apparently means that no GW films can now ever be made because I have said this. I hope you are happy. You made me say it and have spoilt it for all of us now.

Any chance you need any extra animators? Also, I have a feeling that your Chaos Marines will have to be entirely animated, probably with motion capture, because you'll have a hard time finding people who are 7-8 feet tall.

the space marine is actually a real feat for us, were doing practical effects as cgi isnt a price effective option for low budget shoots. We have our practical effects guy CJ working on a marine suit, right now just a skeleton suit but we are going to be creating a nine foot tall practical marine. the only cgi we intend to work with is Skys and digital set extensions.

however if your interested, we always say yes to help.

I understand they sent a cease and desist letter threatening legal action. The Damnatus guys, being reasonsble souls and law-abiding citizens pulled the film in response.

The sick thing was that gw made out they had no other choice under german copyright law. Making the film was allegedly going to destroy gw rights to their own ip and thus destroy the hobby and stop any spess mahrines from being in a film ever. They made out that even admitting to there being a pirated copy in existence was threatening the nature if the universe. Anyway, the film mostly sucks apart from the servo-skulls and the tech-priest.

There is no innocence. Only degrees of guilt.

You guys are seriously complaining about GW shutting it down? You can't go around using someone else's intellectual property to make a film out of, that's just stupid.

Dude, they tolerate other fan films such as exterminatus and lord inquisitor. Star trek and star wars have tolerated fan stuff for years because it drums up business for the franchise. As long as it doesn't charge money and compete it is free advertising. Damnatus got shut down because of a really really stupid legal point that only applies to german copyright law. Still sound "really stupid" to you?

They also told them it was ok to make it right until it was done and about to be released, at which point they told them to stop. Poor show.

Except they have a policy about free use that doesn't cost them money. Keep in mind that this forum and the associated materials are a copyright infringement, and rely on GW's policy.
