I'm mostly looking forward to bombarding DUST mercs from space. Apparently all the MAG clans are coming over to DUST in an attempt to 'rule the EVE universe' I'm not sure they'll be saying then when a few dreadnoughts are in orbit.

I'm getting a little bored of playing Space Marine now and am looking forward to branching out on to this.

This is going to be a weird and exciting game, I just hope it's not buggy as hell and the games all mesh together well.

That's the website and the game is in closed Beta stage. It's been like it a little while, which is good I guess as they are weeding out the naughty little buggy wugs. Hopefully thre shouldn't be too many when it gets its full release.

Another bonus is that it is free.

Basically, let me do a rough lowdown of it.

-EVE online is set in space, it's almost entirely pvp, the market, everything is produced by players, and sold, no such thing as vendors

-In EVE alliances fight over nullsec for control of territory and resources, at the moment, planets aren't really taken into consideration as they are used to make small amounts of money from starbase fuel

-DUST514 allows EVE players to hire mercs, and DUST players to take planets and sell the resources, say for example you are attacking a planet, you have a ground assault and a support fleet, the support fleet ready to destroy and ground targets designated by the ground troops

-DUST514 players can shoot back with AA batteries on the planet's surface, and ship materials into orbit with a sort of 'space elevator'.

-When you die on DUST514, you lose your gear, and have to buy it again, every rifle, suit, every little bit that goes onto your body is produced and sold by players, so it's balancing cost against profit, die too much, and you hardly make anything, if anything, from the battle.

-Every vehicle has to be produced beforehand, and dropped in by someone in the 'MCC' (mobile command centre) they have an overhead view of the map, and are kinda playing an RTS.

-The guy in the MCC drops in things like shield arrays, turrets, medbays, ammunition points, vehicles and so on to where positions need them, but need to ration them so you don't use your whole stock in one go.

Anyone else have any questions?

Well, I think the idea was that as EVE was on PC, it would be the console grunts slogging it out on the ground, they didn't want to make it a choice between having people in ships, and people on the ground, I think that they were trying to appeal to a wider audience. Reminds me of this picture though:

I'm fairly certain that many ps3 players would also like eve on their console as well. Alas, cross-console games are rare.

I personally think that EVE in a console would be a complete waste of time and resources, it suits itself to the pc format, teamspeak3, mouse and keyboard, and other pc resources, and EVE really takes a special kind of person to play, it's a weird game, very niche, and requires constant plotting, scheming, and plans for domination of the next thing.

The reason DUST is on ps3 is because they initially went to Sony and Microsoft, Microsoft wanted a hand in how it was made, and didn't like the fact of the regular patches for content (it's kinda an MMO afterall), Sony just said OK then, let's do it. Wouldn't surprise me if they contributed to the cost of the game being made.

BUT- this is the important bit, a CCP employee did make a very veiled suggestion about it coming to pc after the console release, when someone asked him about why add keyboard and mouse support, he hinted that it might not stay just on ps3, and the mouse and keyboard support was to allow them to keep options open, or something along those lines.

Because the company producing it did something silly and signed an exclusivity clause with Sony after having announced the game for 360, PC, and PS3.

I was excited for this when it was on 360. Much less excited for it as a PS3 exclusive, as PS3's servers irk me.

Ive been scratchin my head about the console format for a while. Eve has been kicking for a decade now and it looks and functions far better than it did on release and has expanded considerably in scope and function... The PS3 has only a few years left before its replaced... what happens to DUST 514 when the console is replaced?

I suspect that it will make its way to the PC eventually. CCP really dropped the ball on that one.

The beta isn't really completely finished, Amarr and Minmatar doesn't actually have any vehicles yet, nor many of the guns in, and a lot of modules.

It shouldn't be treated as a shooter, remember you are fighting for something, whether you win or lose means something, and effects how the universe of EVE plays out.

You offer an expansion to the new gen console...... Like the upgrade from planetside 1 to planetside 2... anyone who can afford the upgrade will gladly do it if the original game was worth it in the first place.

Thats the thing though, Eve is about continuity and community, there are people still playing today that were playing a decade ago. Eve as it is today was the result, in large part, of the actions undertaken yesterday. Replacing dust 514 w Dust 515 or whatever will break some of that continuity and fracture that community. Not everyone who has a PS3 will move to the PS4 which will basically mean a portion of the Dust community, which will also be part of the eve community, will cease to exist virtually overnight at some point in the future. This is an even bigger issue because it is my understanding that Eve corporations/alliances will be able to expand to include a ground component in addition to the fleet. What happens when a majority of one groups ground component doesnt make the switch while their enemies does? All of a sudden an external circumstance will have tilted the scales in favor of one faction over another, something CCP has gone to great lengths to avoid.

Comparing dust/eve to planetside is impossible, there are few similarities, Eve exists as a single game server, and while dust is not a true mmo, all of its servers will be integrated to an extent w one another and w eve in order to preserve and expand continuity and community and ehat happens in one will affect the other.

Expansions have never stopped the MMO community before, and WoW has slowly been getting updated graphics for almost a decade. If the expansion includes incorporating future generations of consoles into their original EvE online game, CCP is just going to have to do something the gaming community isn't exactly known for: innovate.

My hat's off to them for trying - it hasn't really been done before.

I don't see them porting it to the PS4.12 being an issue, it'll just be more sparkly when it does move, I assume they would have taken this into consideration when they started developing it as the PS1000 can't be that far off.

It's going to be a fun experience and I am looking forward to actually getting involved with in it. It's going to be quite the interactive thing as I guess if you go all out, looking for clans and stuff, you'll get to meet a lot more people and and build up your own empires.

I like to leave the thinking to others and do the ass kicking myself

Again, you miss the point: Playstation 3 owner does not equal Playstation 4 owner. At that point its not an expansion, its a new game. Dust 514 will cease to exist and will be replaced by a new game (unless PS3 continues to be supported and Dust 514 can be maintained instead of requiring a new game for PS4). When that happens, a large chunk of the Dust playerbase disappears (if only temporarily), and that will carry over and seriously impact Eve.

Not really sure if your serious... because I'm not sure if you're aware that the major difference between xbox and Playstation is that playstation3 can STILL play ps1 games.

Even when a next gen console is released, the next gen's can play the orginal Dust514, and as updates are only natural to the MMO world, when that happens, EvE will be getting another update. One that will cater to the PS3 fan base as well. It would really make no financial sense to completely abandon the PS3 literally the day of release.

It's one of the issues with folk that are console biased.

Like assuming this won't let you use keyboard+mouse.

Or assuming that it's normal (or good, or even acceptable) to pay to access online play, on top of paying for online access to everything.

Sony has made a lot of decisions that dont make financial sense. It honestly wouldnt suprise me if they pulled the plug on pS3 within a few months of pS4 release. In any case that still doesnt answer the question of what happens to those DUST players that dont upgrade to next gen?
