Purchase your event ticket here: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/shop/anime-expo-40k-tournament-ticket/
Anime Expo is a huge pop culture convention in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Convention Center that runs through 4th of July weekend, the 4th through the 7th. We will be running a Warhammer 40,000 tournament at the con! We’ve done this before at Comikaze, also at the LACC, and they are super fun. Not only will this be a great con in general filled with hot Cos Play girls, movie stars, Anime and Manga artists and writers, etc. but it will also be a great 40K tournament!
This event will be using the BAO tournament format, the details of which you can see here: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/community/bay-area-open/warhammer-40000-championships-rules-scenarios-and-prizes/
It will also be using the latest version of the Indy Tournament FAQ, which you can see here: http://www.frontlinegaming.org/community/40k-faq/
This is going to be a great event! We are very excited for it. For those of you who have not been to a Con like this before, they are super fun. There are only 32 spots for this event though and they're already selling quickly, so grab those tickets fast!
Important things to know about this event:
==This will be a 5 round event, 3 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday.
== You have to buy a Con badge from Anime Expo’s site in order to get into the con. Those can be purchased here: http://www.anime-expo.org/registration/
==You have to also purchase an event ticket from us on our site linked to above. 100% of this money goes directly into prize support which will be in addition to prizes from our sponsors!
==The 40K tournament is Saturday and Sunday. You can get your registration badge anytime starting Thursday. You can pick up your badge as early as 8am on Saturday before the event. Doors open for the con at 10am on Saturday.
==I, Reece, will be out front of the con helping to direct traffic and making sure everyone is where they need to be. The picture below is of the front of the Convention center, which is where I will be. Look for me in front of the double doors. The ugly duckling in the second picture is yours truly so you know who to look for.
==The event will start at 10:45am on Saturday.
This is going to be a great event! Here are some pictures from previous Anime Expos! If you have any questions, email me at Contact@FrontlineGaming.org or post them in the comments section.

Well, considering how expensive it is to rent space at the LA Convention center, and that this is a pay to play event, the odds of having open gaming are very close to zero. They are actually zero, if I am going to be honest.
The format would be BAO style, for those that don't understand what that means it would be a Swiss style competitive tournament at 1750pts, just like we ran at the Bay Area Open. Hopefully that helps to clarify my question.
Thanks for the input though, Anpu42.

I am there. It is during a time when I have time, and it's in my neighborhood!
My only questions :would entry fee for the tournament include entry fee to the convention? How many players is this capped at? I have found the larger tournaments to be quite daunting. I would still go if you were running 256 players though

My main reason for asking about open gaming is I have had some bad experiences [oddly enough in my favor once]. My last tournament was back in 2nd edition. So if you could let me know what the BAO/Swiss Style is like, maybe it would change my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback!
So to answer questions,
The tournament would be on the 6th and 7th, so you would still be free for the 4th.
I am not clear on prices yet, haven't gotten that far into negotiations, yet.
Comikaze is on, it is early November.
This will not conflict with the Las Vegas Open, we are still planning on hosting that in early March (BAO time slot) and moving the BAO.
Let me know if you guys have any additional questions!

Normally I would preface a post like this saying that my opinion is just hypothetical since I'm not really interested in playing 6th edition tournaments...however, I'm likely going to be playing some in the upcoming year because of how much I like the look of the Tau codex, so with that said, I have decided that I don't care for the tournament-within-a-convention hall concept because:
• Tournaments are already loud enough (or too loud depending on your point of view) when just involving the gamers playing. Once you add in a convention hall full of people, it is just too much and makes it just a little bit harder to enjoy playing the games and talking to your opponents.
• I don't know what deals you'll be able to strike with the convention organizers about getting us advance access, but if there is even a *chance* of having to stand in the normal access line to get into the hall then that alone is essentially a deal-breaker for me. Just not worth that hassle.
• So far the way you've cordoned off the tournament area for Comikazee has made me feel roughly 'safe enough' to leave my stuff in there for a few minutes while I go grab some food, but honestly it is kind of a dicey situation.
While miniature gamers can (and have) stolen each others' stuff before, for whatever reason I feel a bit more secure in an area that tends to have only people that dedicated to playing mini games, as they usually have about the same 'skin in the game' as I do, when it comes to value of their own stuff to be stolen. Plus I think it is a hell of a lot easier to spot some random person coming in snooping through stuff in an isolated gaming hall than it is in a giant convention hall with thousands of people where literally anyone could sneak under/through a barrier for a minute or two without being detected if they really wanted.
• Concrete floors = sore feet.
So because of that, even though I enjoy Frontline run events, I would likely pass on all future tournaments-within-a-convention hall events.

I 2nd what John said about being able to get in.
It is tricky enough to haul my army, but to be in with the cattle at 8am when the doors open is a disaster waiting to happen. I heard last year it took a couple of hours to get everyone in.
If you can arrange an express lane or something it would help you and the event alot.
I might even be able to make that event also.

Thanks for the feedback guys!
@Yakface
We didn't have any issue with theft last year. Some folks did wander in to check things out, but we were really good about shooing them out. We always have at least one of our staff present to keep an things as it does get hectic in the convention.
@Coop
Baby T for the win! haha
@Blood Lord Soldado
Yes, Comikaze was a bit of a cluster F getting people in last year, but this is a different event with different administration and a different system. They also have been around longer.
That said, we would ask to include into our contract the ability to check out attendees in ourselves and get them in without waiting. It helps keep things on track.

Reece,
I wasn't trying to imply that there was any issue at Comikazee with theft, and everyone should know that. You did do an admirable job of keeping your area supervised.
However, I was just talking about generalities, and one of the reasons I might not attend a tournament within a convention hall event. As we all know, there is ALWAYS the possibility that your models can get stolen at any event if you leave them unattended and its ultimately not on the tournament organizer to keep your models safe. However, I feel that remote chance of it happening to me is slightly higher at a tournament inside a convention hall rather than at something like the BAO.
I'm sure there's not enough data to justify that feeling (as you probably haven't had any instances of stolen models at either type of event yet), so I'm really just talking about that gut feeling. A tournament within a convention hall has a whole lot more complete strangers within fairly short proximity to my stuff and therefore the odds are essentially higher that disaster *could* possibly happen and my stuff could get ganked.
As that is mostly a fleeting concern, it alone would not prevent me from attending a tournament inside a convention hall, but combined with the other points I posted above (which are actually more annoying) it does factor in to me not really being interested in attending.
But anyway, I've said my peace and I'll leave it be.

This is a tough one to say. Yakface has come up with a valid concern with stolen models. The Anime convention (as well the business end) scene is something that I am well versed in with long time friends still being involved some of the largest conventions in California/US. Still have convention burnt out syndrome from being involved with that scene.
Include a high volume of attendance and a great deal of foot traffic for this convention and you have the possibility of "things taking feet". I would hate to see the tournament being tarnished by loss of models.
Where you are going to set up is paramount to your success as well as well as protection of models. Get those potential problems dealt with and you should be fine.

Hey guys, I'm kind of sorry I brought it up. I was trying to give feedback, but I do think taken purely out of context it makes things sound a lot worse than they are in reality.
They've run two (I think) successful events already right in the middle of the LA convention center hall during Comikazee, and they had the area cordoned off well and always had at least one staff member on hand to keep an eye on things. If this would be your primary reason for not attending, I'd urge you reconsider and give it a try.
I do think the chance of having your things stolen is slightly higher than a standard tournament in its own hall, but really we're talking about like going from a 2% chance to a 4% chance...certainly not catastrophic.

@ Yakface. with all due respect, They need to know the great deal of foot traffic that goes along with being part of Anime Expo and with Foot traffic comes problems Last Year there was close to 50000 people showing up and probably a great deal more than was posted. I've worked in these types of situations, which is why I no longer do (or perform) any large conventions anymore. The logistics can be a complete and total nightmare if you are not on top of it and have a top notch staff.
That saying if they have a suitable area to run a tournament that they are comfortable in then by all means go for it. Reece is a smart guy and has a good group of people with him.
But they NEED to know that the place is going to be packed. And things do happen. Just be aware that Anime Expo is not a gaming convention. This is more or less evolved into a multimedia convention, that involves some heavy hitters within the pacific rim. A different mind set all together.
Now if Reece and his group can score to be invited to one of the guest rooms/parties, that is where the real parties begin.

Hey guys, we are no strangers to running 40K tournaments in huge cons. We have run 2 already at the Los Angeles Convention Center (where this event will be held) with attendance figures over 40,000 people both times. Not a single model stolen yet.
Our tournament is in the main hall, but we have a partition around the event so that random people walking by can't come within arm's reach of any stuff, and we have a staff member keeping people out. Trust me, it's plenty safe.

Honestly guys, the convention hall games have been some of the most fun I've had at a tournament. I was at both of the Comikaze tournaments and not once did I feel like my models were in any way vulnerable to theft. The atmosphere is so much different than your standard hotel conference room tournament most 40k cons seem to fall into. For one, there are people who will be experiencing the hobby for the first time by watching you play. As long as you don't have the personality of a wet sock you will enjoy the attention you will get from random strangers (and pretty con girls). During your breaks you have free time to walk around and see all of the cool stuff going on, and if we are being honest I think anyone going to a 40k tournament has at least a passing interest in anime. Did I mention the pretty girls wearing costumes? Yak Man brought up the fact that there is the possibility that you might have to *gasp* wait in line like some dirty peasant. I certainly had to keep my pimp hand strong when one of these 'people' tried to touch me during the first Comikaze, but you know what? I also got to meet Ensign Harry F'n Kim from Star Trek Voyager. I would call that a wash.
