And if so, is this still one of the best ways to run IG? Or is there a new optimal build?

I've seen this list doing the rounds in a few threads, and I guess it could be considered the current "optimum" build. It's very min-max.

Plenty of scoring, plenty of AV12, plenty of plasma There's a lot to like. The only thing that would need reconsidering is the Leman Russ. I haven't go the rules to hand but I think because of the Heavy rule, the Leman Russ' won't be able to fire both their Battle Cannon and Plasma Cannons?

I think if they don't move they can shoot all 3 weapons, if they move at combat speed they can shoot 2, and if they move at cruising speed they can fire snap shots.

Do you get doctrine to take squadron of vehicles so you get 9 vendetta and leman russ battle tanks?

I'd swap two leman russes out for two squadrons of 2 griffons - those things are amazing...

Or swap out the battle tanks for colossus' now those things are really amazing.....In my opinion.

My IG WIP log

40k is as exciting as riding a pony, which doesn't sound very exciting.......

But the pony is 300 feet tall and covered in CHAINSAWS!

They removed "Lumbering Behemoth" in the IG 6th edition update. Now Russ`s use the "Heavy vehicle" rule in the main rule book.
So that means they can fire all their weapons as if they didnt move but they can never move faster than combat speed and never can move flat out.So yeah..move up to 6" and fire everything all the time.
Now under the Ordinance rules the LR battle cannon being ordinance will force you to make snap shots with the remainder of the tanks weapons. So not sure if its even worth it to use secondary weapon upgrades on the LRBT anymore...

Drop the Plasma Cannon Sponsons for sure; as mentioned above you have to Snap Fire your remaining weapons if you fire the Battle Cannon, and you can't Snap Fire a Blast weapon. Heavy Bolter Sponsons for the LRBT and Vendettas would be nice.

Pretty clean looking list. Satisfies my OCD side, and with that much Plasma...

Yup, swap out the LRBTs for better russes, and bias more towards melta weapons, and you'll be fine.

you might think about swapping some of the plasma guns to flamers with grenadiers ... the ordnance charge can be really useful in alot of situations, and the flamers are cheap and work well against hordes.

Or swap the melta and one plasma.

I sense a lot of spam here.
A good list, if not better, could be obtained with more variety I think. The griffon advice is to be considered.

Even more so than in 5th edition, troops and their mobility is what makes you win. So I suggest to switch one of your HQ to veterans. Take more meltaguns in your vet's : tanks are still running and strong, especially AV 13+ or AV 12 skimmers. You could put one of your plasma vet's in a Vendetta for line breaker, backfield objective grabbing and hard striking duties, on mid to late game.

On the Leman Russes subject, the good old artillery versions are not so optimal now, due to the heavy rule. If you still want them, run them bare. Or explore the possibilities offered by non-artillery variants with sponsons. However, I am not sure that there is good complementarity between LRBT and a chimera heavy army. Presenting a rolling wall of AV 12 was one of the main features that made mechanized IG so potent. While I don't play this type of list, I have to recognise it as still strong and popular in my area.

So what would be the best replacement for the LRBT's? Executioners? Or a non-LR variety like Medusa?

I'd take a few Melta weapons, but lean mostly towards Plasma. Also try to fit in some Barrage.

It's a scary list no doubt. But the Chimeras aren't quite as durable as before and you may find your Guardsmen evaporating quicker than in 5th due to the amount of anti-infantry most lists pack these days.

Heavy Support – Colossus Siege Tank

One of the CCS and one of the Vet Squads have been switched to melta, the melta vets dropped the chimera and will go in a vendetta for linebreaker. Two of the LRBT have been switched to executioners with the same sponsons, no ordnance, can move 6" and fire everything, 10 plasma blasts etc. Guardsman Marbo has been added. And in the last slot a Colossus, since people love to use them, they have an insane range, barrage, and most importantly, AP 3. I know people love the manticore, but I mostly play against meq, and bringing AP 4 just doesn't make sense to me.

This exactly, those plasma cannnon sponsons wont be able to fire.

No. They are heavy vehicles now which means they can move up to 6inches a turn and never move faster. You count as being stationary so you can fire all your weapons. Unfortunetly the LRBT and demolisher have ordnance weapons. The rule for ordnance states that if you fire an ordnance weapon then you snap fire everything else. So basically if you fire the Battle cannon or demolisher cannon everything else has to snap fire. Understand now???

Why would some one take a colossus over a basilisk, the basilisk gun stats are strictly better than the colossus, str 9 ap3 large blast 24-240 vs str 6 ap3 large blast 24-240. Is the key difference that the colossus doesn't need LoS? And that barrage ignores cover?

Not needing line of sight and ignoring cover are amazing rules.. take out all infantry using it even if in cover ANYWHERE on the table.

Umm... to blow up necron arks... and... that's most of it, I guess.

As for what to replace the LRBT with, either the exterminator or vanquisher if you want to keep things cheap, or else the punisher.

As for the list, I'm not the biggest fan of a single artillery piece. Seems like that would be a pretty big target if the only other thing they could shoot their mid-strength weapons at is russes.

Barrage does not ignore cover. the collosus ignores cover but barrage does not. And s6 means your still wounding just about everything on 2+

I don't think he was implying that barrage ignores cover, just that the colossus one does.

I'd still really push for the griffons over near any other artillery piece, as their re-roll to hit makes them incredibly accurate - getting an armour save isn't such a big deal if you have over twice as many hits to save They're twice as deadly to vehicles and have twice the defence - what's not to like? I'd have 2 griffons over 1 colossus any day.
