The Off Topic Waste - NationStates

Welcome to the thread for the DakkaDakka Nationstates thread! We on DakkaDakka have our own so called 'region', where all are nations are located in. The awesome thing is: you can join too! Huzzah!

What is NationStates?

According to the Nationstates FAQ:

NationStates is a free nation simulation game. You create your own country, fashioned after your own ideals, and care for its people. Either that or you deliberately torture them. It's really up to you.

Basically, you create your own nation, and rule over it. Every day you get one or two issues (or one every week, you can choose that in the options menu). The choices you make with these issues affects your country. This is what the NationStates FAQ says about it:

Once or twice a day, you'll face an issue, and need to decide what to do about it. How you respond will determine almost everything about how your nation evolves.

There's no micro-management in NationStates! You control your nation by making broad policy decisions, not tweaking numbers

And what if you don't like any of the solutions to the issue you just got? That's right, you'll do the same as a real government: you press the dismiss button, wich will mean that in a couple of hours, the issue is gone. Just ignore your people!

Why play Nationstates?

Why not? NationStates is a fun, web-based game. Granted, if you don't like text, you won't like it, but you're on this forum anyways, so I take you don't have any problem with that. NationStates also has a forum, wich is mainly used for Role-Playing games. Most of these use your entire nation or some important people from your nation, others are set in an entirely different place and time.

Knew you'd ask that! First of all, create your nation on nationstates.net. Then, first of all, go and do some issues. You'll have four from the start. Then, head over to our region, The Off Topic Waste and hit the button that will move your nation to our region. You'll be asked a password, because we don't want random people we don't know joining. Well, maybe we do, but I'm a bit paranoia. The password is simply 'dakka'.
If you did all this, you're in our region, and are good to go to play NationStates!

What next?

Well, if you like, you can start working on your factbook. This is where you write down all sorts of stuff you want about your nation. You should also head over to the Regional Message board, down at the region page, and say hi. You should also do that in this thread, so we know who that new nation is. Then, you can head over to the Forum and take a look to see if there is a Role-Playing game you might like and can join.
Don't forget to come back every now and then or, preferabbly, daily! You'll get new issues every day, and your country needs you!

Seeing this thread, I revived my nation Auretaine. Then I read over the unaddressed issues and remember why I forgot about this crap.

Yep and they are all moronic. The issues themselves are sometimes interesting but the options are awful. Two of the three are usually the same and the third is basically unrelated but always absurdly extreme. It's like

A small number of puppies are sick. You can:

(a) completely eliminate healthcare for humans and use the money to fund veterinarians instead

(b) dramatically increase veterinarian funding by completely eliminating healthcare for humans

(c) kill all the puppies and go to war with every surrounding country to kill their puppies, too.

Yeah, you're a meagre four (out of five ) in our region.

#1 for me. I've had all issues available to me, including easter eggs, so I don't answer issues at the moment. Comparing those stats is always a lot of fun, however.

I wonder if it would be fun to get a bunch of Dakkanauts together and start fresh -- all new countries in an all new region. Maybe try to keep things a bit more 'serious' to foster more roleplay.

I've only seen two so far (which is what, half of them? ). One with your nation picking an official favorite colour, and another with a "don't press this button"-button. Naturally, I pressed the button, and cute kittens killed off everyone in my country.

If you revive your nation after not having played for a while, you can get a zombie one I think..

But yes, that might be a nice idea. I haven't been doing any "nation-roleplaying" on the site for a while, although I still feel the need to do so once in a while!

Every player/nation has to be in a "Region", which in a way is pretty much a group. Many of these regions don't force you to do anything and, Roleplay-wise, you can be indelendrnt without a problem.
Our Dakkadakka group currently isn't really Roleplay oriented (although that can change in the future, naturally), and is more of a place to hang out, really. No rules, freedom, equality, blaagh!
