Yeah, so, if someone created a movie of the Horus Heresy, which actors would play the main characters?
Who would play the Primarchs?
The Emprah?
Erebus?
Loken, Torgaddon, Abbadon, Aximand?
Garro?
Ollanius Pius?
Heck, even the Chaos Gods?!
Please no comments on why a HH movie would never happen, just who would play the pivotal characters if one was made.
Begin!

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

If it was done in one movie it would be terrible. The Horus Heresy is a monumental event and to try to cram it into a frantic three hours would frankly spoil a years-long war. It would need to be at least 6-8 films, similar in style to the Harry Potter series. The other problem is that it's a very simultaneous story. The Burning of Prospero, the Battle of Calth and Isstvan 3 & 5 occur very close together in the timeline but are too important to squeeze into one film, so there's a risk people not familiar with the events might find the story confusing. Ideally I guess you would have one film for the seeds of Horus' downfall and Isstvan 3, one for Isstvan V, one for Calth, one for Prospero, one for the Schism of Mars, one for the Siege of Terra and then the rest linking things together, develping plot and focussing on lesser events like the battle of Phall (a big deal but not quite as huge as the others imo), Fulgrim's apotheosis and many other events like that. If done full justice it would be a brilliant series, it's a fantastic piece of background with rich development, though I worry that there wouldn't be a great deal of attendance.

Since I hardly answered your original question, Stephen Fry as Nurgle.

Currently not in posession of any armies - I merely theorycraft and discuss background,
Waiting for HH Book 6 so I can start an Imperial Army army.

The main issue with a 40k film I think would be the age rating, make it a 12 and all the grim dark will be gone, make it an 18 and no one will see it at the cinema, hard to make these kinds of films

Russell Crowe as Horus, and cast Anne Hathaway as Abaddona, his girlfriend/second in command.

Yeah, that's what would happen.

I was in a meeting once with Tom Kirby and he said that when he has been approached about GW doing movies, that is one of the stopping points...the romance of a Space Marine and a female character.

I'm guessing a GW movie would have to be done Transformers style, where normal humans run around helping the Space Marines etc.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase.

Vin Diesel would make a good primarch or marine.
Ron Perlman would make a great Angron or Abaddon.
Nathan Fillion could make a good Horus.
Jason Statham as a servitor or console. (I kid)
Jason Momoa would be great as a marine or primarch.

Not just listing actors I like or anything, honest... ; p

The Horus Heresy would never work in on the big screen. As pointed out earlier, to stay true the story, you alienate the revenue, and to generate the revenue, you alienate the story. Kids = Full seats, and anything in a theatre is all about filling chairs. Take 50 Shades of Grey for example. When the project first launched, they promised to stick with the story and include all the sex and rate it at NC-17. Recently they announced they'll release an edited version alongside rated R. HH would be best served in the same respect as Game of Thrones. On HBO and broken down into a lot of episodes to fully utilize the vast story. However, there isn't enough sex, so the ratings will always come up short...

To be as brutal as possible. Like, Quentin Tarantino brutal.

Heh, imagine it - a warhammer film directed by Tarantino. It will either be completely awesome or weaksauce.

Anyway, Sean Bean as Ollanius Pius. Because apparently, dying is his job in films

I don't know who would play who, but I'm going to go with my acting dreamteam:

Harrison Ford
Sean Connery
Christian Bale
Gerard Butler
Russell Crowe
Liam Neeson
Chris Hemsworth
Vin Diesel
Nathan Fillion
Viggo Mortenson
Morgan Freeman (Macharius the Sigilite? I think so.)
Samuel L. Jackson
Laurence Fishburne
Michael Fassbender
Christoph Waltz

Granted some of these might be too old to really play any of the major roles, but with computer tech being what it is these days...

Now most of you have named some fine actors and please shout out if I'm mistaken but don't all the Primarchs share smell facial and physical attributes? If I'm right doesn't that mean that we need to be looking at actors of similar ages?

Again I'm probably wrong here.

Well... we actually have no idea what the Primarchs looked like apart from their greatest physical features. Sanguinus had wings. Magnus had one red eye. Russ had a beard. Corax was pale as hell. Vulkan was black. So forth and so on.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I would probably spontaneously burst out laughing if I saw any well known actor without a considerable amount of make up/modifications to their appearance in the role a of a major 30k character.

I mean, other than that Colonel guy from Avatar being Dorn, though partly because he's forgettable to begin with. I'd rather see all unknowns with decent acting skills.

feth it, I'm gonna include athletes in here too.
Vin Diesel should be the Emperor. He can be intimidating, and has the proper skintone. Have him grow his hair out, and use Hollywood magic to make him over 7' to be even more commanding.
Clay Matthews HAS to be Leman Russ.
Bryan Cranston should be Horus. He's bald and can sound threatening. That's the extent of this connection.
Brad Pitt with mid back length hair would be a PERFECT Sanguinius.
I can really see Johnny Depp as Fulgrim. Don't know why.
Magnus would pretty much have to be a guy red as a lobster buffed with cgi to be over 14'.
I can really see Charles Dance as Erebus.
I can really see Liam Neeson as Oll Pious.
I can really see Keith David being Khorne (gods potrayed as voices)
I can see Michelle Pfieffer as Slaanesh (again the voice)

That's all I got.
