All of Minnesota's K-12 public schools will be closed on Monday, Gov. Mark Dayton announced Friday.

The National Weather Service is anticipating most of the state will experience the coldest temperatures in a decade on Monday, with temperatures reaching a high of 15 below and a low of 30 below.

A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued through noon on Tuesday. Dayton said the safety of Minnesota's school children is the state's first priority.

All Minnesotans should be cautious about the weather in the coming days.

The decision to close schools across the state was announced today in order to give school administrators, teachers, and parents sufficient time to plan for these closures, Dayton said.

State law provides the Governor of Minnesota authority to “authorize the commissioner of education to alter school schedules, curtail school activities, or order schools closed."

This is the first time a Minnesota governor has closed schools in response to cold weather since January 1997, when former Gov. Arne Carlson canceled schools as temperatures plunged to 32 below in the Twin Cities. Carlson also closed schools in January 1994 and February 1996.

A friend of mine is visiting family in North Dakota, and she posted a picture from a couple days ago when it was -36F at 9am. It's supposed to get -6F here in St. Louis on Monday. Waaaay too cold for me!

Well I live in Michigan so is supposed to be super freaking cold. Something along the lines of -25 degrees Fahrenheit at some points. This is getting crazy. We're about to turn into human icicles.

Yesterday was a fun commute. I think it was -15 with sustained 17 mph winds when I went in at 11am. Coming home it was -19 and the wind was still going strong.

Here it was -35F with wind chill, a weather warning, orders for only emergency vehicles to be on the roads, and I still had to cover the overnight shift

With windchill yesterday it only reached about -50 F here in Minneapolis. You know it's bad when I get a text saying I can work from home. Apparently that only happens when we get over 2ft of snow in less than 24 hours or it dips below the -40 mark

Derp indeed, given that I've got a friend in Finland wearing shirt sleeves because the temp is about +40F over average and it's one of the few times in memory going back through his parents that there hasn't been snow on the ground this time of year.
