[Post related to Poll]
Hey dudes. No progress updates atm. I'm currently out of glue and it's jamin' up the works!
However I pose a question:
What should this guy be holding in his outstretched left hand?

I've had three Ideas so far, two of which fit more into 40k law/gaming and the other fits more with the grim reaper theme.

1. Holding a (flaming?)skull. (Codex:LotD sergeant rules)
2. Holding a short chain with a rosarius hanging on the end. (Astorath wargear)
3. Holding an hourglass (totally grim and reapery)

Let me know what you think
OR
Hit me with your own idea!

Peace

Rejoice, for I have stirred from my pit of despair!
This is a project I started working on before the LotD SupCod announcement.
Originally I'd planned to build an Astorath Counts As to lead my LotD who I would field using DC rules and... well...
The plan has not changed one bit

Without further rambling, here's where I'm at so far.

He is currently mostly held together with blu-tac as I've not totally decided in his stance. I like how he's standing in these images but I would like to know what you guys think.
Once a stance has been locked in I plan to GS him a complete robe which would leave pauldrons, belt, hands, part of his chest and parts of his legs exposed. His head will be under a deep, pointed hood.
I have a set of SG wings I want to give him but currently I am struggling with his custom JP

I was going for a more compact feel, more rudimentary and under-developed. Half-way between a jump pack and a regular power plant.
But it just seems to lack the 'umph' that other SM JPs have. As well as that, I'm finding it difficult to position the wings on this thing

At this stage I'm considering rebuilding his pack and also the top of the scythe. I'm not entirely sure if I like the skeleton figurehead and want to see if I can come up with something better.
Tell me what you think about these ideas. If you like the scythe, let me know. Alternatively I'm open to suggestions if you have Ideas on how I could improve my current scythe and jp designs.

Thanks in advance
Peace

P.s. Let me know if I'm going over-kill with all these skulls. Sometimes I feel like I'm building a Khorne army

Okay, okay, so the previous post was nothing to look at really.
So here,

Better, no?
GS work I still need to do on the robe includes finishing the sleeves, additional layers to the lower portion of the robe, details/edging, and of course the hood.
If anyone has any tips to share with sculpting robes/cloths please do so.

My questions still stand from my previous post as well.
If you like what you see (hell, even if you don't and just wanna rage about it) leave a comment.

Cheers

Woot!! I'm glad someone likes it.
I promise the final result will be much more awesome than it currently is.
ATM I'm still working on shaping the back cloth of his robe which is taking a while since I'm pretty much just winging it and have no actual idea of what I should be doing to make it look good. So far though it's lookin' aaallll riiiiight

Thanks buddy I hope I can make it as good as I'm envisioning it to be in the final result.

Here's where I'm at on the lower robe. It's slow going but I'm learning as I go

At this stage I can still remove the robe from the legs which makes them easier to work on. I'm thinking about adding a smaller, second layer of cloth under this one just to give more detail and depth to the model.
It's still rough but I'm about the smooth it all out. I also want his right foot to be mostly covered by cloth similar to the AoBR Captain, however i think I have given the cloth wrong 'flow' or direction to pull this off.

Dude this is epic!!! Love the robes, any chance you could tell me how you did it once youve got the hood sorted lol.

The concept is great. The main issue for me is that you are using skull bits from the last millennium. GW sculpts for skulls has improved A LOT in the past years. If you want to avoid comedy gimp look, I'd suggest at finding more recent alternatives. Skeleton regiment may not even be the best source for skulls these days.

Thanks dude, I'm really enjoying this conversion (even though I'm taking it slow). As for the robe, this is actually the first major cloth sculpting I've done. I pretty much looked up a whole bunch of tutorials on different ways to do it then let all the information stew in my brain and mix in together. Then I just wing'd it
But seriously, I rolled some GS flat in between two pieces of baking paper (make sure you use the most glossy sides of the paper so it sticks less) then cut it to an approximate shape, thinking about how I wanted it to wrap around the back of his legs. once that piece was stuck on I pushed it around using my GS tool, mostly focusing on where the cloth would tuck in and less on the cloth flowing out. Once it dried I added extra strips of GS to the areas that flow or stretch out (as you can probably see by the different shades of green in my last post).

Cheers for the heads up. I wasn't actually planning on using the skulls pictured, they're more for demonstrative purposes however I am interested in getting a hold of some nice looking skulls (the more anatomically correct the better) so if you have some suggestions a link or two would be much appreciated

As for progress, I've added a small second layer of torn cloth under the main robe on the legs. I'm having trouble describing it so I'll chuck up a picture a little later on.
I'm almost finished Gs'ing the legs and the torso only needs more work on the sleeves and a decent skull to put a hood over. Beyond that I'm wanting to build another scythe and am still struggling with a unique (but distinctly still Imperial) JP design with wings.

hit me with some ideas if you have any.

New scythe blade. Still working on it.
Thinking about adding those dangly skull bits so I've blue-tac'd them on for this photo.

I'm thinking about re-building the robe on the back of his legs to be sweeping in the opposite direction and having it more covering his right leg.
Aside from that, no major progress, mostly been shaping the scythe which is now on the verge of snapping. I'll look at ways to reinforce it to prevent this while also improving it aesthetically.

Looking good man, I think the dangley skulls will look good when you incorporate them properly. looking forward to more.

I'm not sure if this counts as progress since pretty much everything different about the model has only been blue-tac'd on, but here's what I got:

The custom jump pack is made from a teleport homer, a Stormboyz Accessory, two bits I have no idea what they are but they're from the Contemptor Dread kit, and finally, the lid from a generic fish-shaped soy sauce thing.

Wings are from a Sang Guard but I wanna find something a little more... Idk... thematic?
It would be cool to find some skeletal wings of suitable size. So far all the ones I've found were slightly too big.
I'm also going to be resculpting the lower half of the robe. I want it too flow in the other direction with a little more wind kicking it up.

As always comments and criticisms are welcome.

Peace

Love the jump pack, the wings give him an awesome angel of death look. It might just be the picture angle because it looks alright in previous photos, but his left foot looks a bit odd. I can see what you were going for but you may want to look into tweaking that a bit.

Looking great over all though.

I'm actually really glad you mentioned that about the foot. It's been bugging me for a while. I wasn't sure if it was just me being over-critical of my own stuff or what but yeah... thanks
It should look okay but from certain angles it just doesn't so I'll definitely have to do something about it.

Backpack has been assembled and glued. I'm actually really happy with how it turned out, and best of all I found a use for the Teleport Homer bit.

Now don't feel bad RobZie, but going from your advice I've decided to scrap the legs of the model entirely. You might call it a major tweak
I've convinced myself I can make better ones with a less awkward pose. This is also a good way I can avoid having to GS'ing another cloak for a while #Procrastination

I'm still thinking about the wings though I have been considering these with suitable alteration:

More recently though I've thought about trying to locate some feathered, tattered wings. I'm considering taking this path as I believe, with the above wings, the model would appear much too chaosy.
The only question is where can I find such wings?
Currently my internet is severely limited so some direction or help would be much appreciated.
it would be cool to hear whether people prefer Feather or Leather wings

Peace out, my people!

the DE feathered wings are some of my favourites, they are plenty dynamic and you could cut them and bend them in for a more grounded look.

can we see what the leg tweak is please??? I love your robes so far, they are excellent work (but I do agree with how long and boring cloaks can get!)

I actually think the wings you linkied would look sick, could we see them next to the model for a size comparison? I don't think it would look too chaosy, as this is the legion of the damned after all

Good, cant wait to see what you come up with. On the wings question, i really like the feathered ones and think they will look quite fitting painted in a dark grey/ black. but its ultimately up to you and your preferences, as the leathery ones would fit the theme you are going for and have bones in them, and the LoTD are all about skeletons and bones. So if it were MY choice id say the bony leathery set (with suitable alterations )

I think I'll stick with those wings unless I stumble upon something more appeasing.
Gunna order a set tomorrow.

Also...

New legs!

I know they look a bit scrawny atm but once I robe it up they'll be sufficiently bulky.
The robe will be sweeping out behind him to his left. His right leg will be largely covered by the robe being blown across it.

Peace

This is indeed epic! I really like that new pose. It looks more stable than the first and more dynamic.

I would say though that I'm not sold on the scythe blade. Space Marine equipment is full of symmetry and balance with smooth lines and full shapes. That blade looks a little Dark Eldar to me.

Maybe when its all put together the blade will mesh better with the rest of the model? Just my opinion

Thanks for the compliments guys. I feel much better about this pose. The last one just felt awkward.
The head is purely temporary, I have no intention of using that one.

At the moment the scythe is far from finished. I certainly intend to give it a more SM look, as well as more bone/skull GS work where I can fit it in. Maybe even change out the shaft for something better.

Look forward to it

New GS cloth over the new legs.

as you can see I've done two layers of cloth in an attempt to give more detail and make his robe that much more tattered however I'm not so sure on the execution.

As usual, let me know what you think.

Thankyou RobZie. Yours and others continued support is what helps me keep going. Hopefully, once I'm completely happy with the robe, progress will pick up again.
After that I'll need to finish his scythe, give him a head and hood, figure out what hes holding in his outstretched arm, and glue it all together!

Cheers for the supportz
