Warhammer 40,000 is finally getting the space strategy game that many have wanted for the longest time, with this new game on the way promising an initial pack of four races (Imperium, Eldar, Orks, and Chaos) and a deep campaign (Imperial only sadly, guess we'll have to wait for the expansions) concerning the battles your Imperial battlefleet fight to turn back the tides of destruction.

I personally can't wait. While the 40k TT game has been depressingly bad so far, generally GW's video games have been top knotch. And the space ships look absolutely gorgeous.

(Also in semi-related news, this publishing studio is also making Blood Bowl 2)

The company making it seems to have pretty decent design chops, so I'm hopeful.

Well consider me teased. I find the video games to be the best part of the franchise. My only reservation is that it's just the basic 4 races.

I would be more worried if they tried doing every race from the start, that screams of bad management.

Seems like they'll go the dawn of war route of adding one or two new races with every expansion, packed with a campaign to feature them.

The Necrons are obviously the final boss since every BFG player probably has PTSD from the last time they faced a Necron fleet with a good player at the helm.

True. They even picked some of the better ones to start with. You have the iconic, The fun and crazy, and the ones who use solar sails. You get some good diversity out of those three. Only one I would change would be to swap chaos for the nids. On the other hand, I get a little board seeing the same 4 races announce first in very game. I want them to mix it up more. That is just me being picky I guess though.

To be honest, Relic was the only competent games designer that's done any good for the 40k universe, and whoever did Chaos Gate way back when. Everything else, from Fire Warrior, onwards, basically sucked. I've not heard of this company before, so I'm not holding my breath on it.

Dont get your hopes up, they will proabably mess it up. And the game will end up the same sorry mess as the DoW 2 games did.

The negative vibes...
It will be funny how an OOP game of GW's gets used for a PC / console game.
This will completely depend on the control interface if it "flies" or not.
Hope it does well, it would be nice to see if anyone can succeed where Relic left off.

Homeworld was the last good space game, as far as I remember... Star Citizen doesn't count because it's technically not released, and Elite: Dangerous is Eurotruck Simulator in space The only other space-ish game I'm holding out hopes for is Dreadnought, which is also being developed by an unrecognizable studio, but looks like it holds promise.

Dreadnought also looks pretty small scale with their "space" filled with structures and debris.

Sins of a Solar Empire was great, I'd totally recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it yet.

Four's a good number of races to start an RTS game off with, enough for a wide variety of match ups while not too much to overwhelm the developers at first with the task of having to make them all play uniquely without being game breaking. Then you can add more factions later on while still developing the original four.

Well they did push the release date back a year so they have the time to do something decent. At least their latest Dev video (featuring a reasonably innovative boarding action) shows quite a lot of promise.

I'm not sure about this game to be honest, a lot depends on the strategic layer.

Lorewise, the battles are supposed to take place at ranges of hundreds of thousands of kilometers.

But who the hell cares. That would not make for a fun game more than a reskin of Battleships.

The game play looks to be solid so far but I will wait to see more, I have said in the news & rumours thread that the scale is a little off if they increased the distances a little bit more it would feel less cramped

Other than the that the effects, the models, the textures, the customisation looks bloody good !

1cm on tabletop is 1000km. The base of the ship on tabletop is really a counter that represents an area of 1500km radius in case of cruiser, with the ship itself being a central molecule of the base - the models in the tabletop game are just for decorative purposes/justifying having to buy lots of models to be able to play with different ships.

More like a reskin of Battlefleet Gothic with more sophisticated mechanics that would be too hard to implement on tabletop (accelaration, inertia, 3 dimenisions, detailed damage, ). Or Harpoon in space. Ships could also be represented together with special effects in sensor image windows and stuff like that. If you were a more cultured person and you'd ever play any naval command simulation game, you'd know that the standard is presenting a map and separate window(s) with view of a ship/plane with its surroundings which allows to see 3d models/fireworks without breaking the scale of a game.

Sounds incredibly dull.

This is the Battlefleet Gothic I'm signing up for.
Spoiler:

And seriously, "more cultured person"? lol. I don't think you remember where you are or what the subject matter is here, friend.

Remind me who the target audience of the 40k line is for? Yeah? Wait, it's not anyone who's EVER played Harpoon. Asking for a Harpoon-esque version of BFG makes sense, but sneering at people for not wanting to spend six days planning out the logistics for one fight is plain unreasonable.

And nice job on the insult as well, glad that someone so 'cultured' as yourself could be so kind as to assist us plebeians.
