Hi people. I was a fan of the necrons in the 5th-6th ed, and I wondered how they fared now in 7th ed with their new codex and what were the formations that were popular. I was wondering how I could start them and then slowly but surely make my way up to 1500 pts. Thx for your advices !

Hey,
Battleforce box is a good start. You'll want all those models anyway. 20 warriors is good start, you'll need them. 5 immortals are must if you want to use decurion, so also must-have. Ghost ark is just fantastic (by look and power).
For HQ, money-wise CCB is great choice. You will get solid HQ (CCB) with option to put Overlord on foot (normaly it's overpriced finecast - here you get it "for free") and get good support unit (A-Barge). Other options are also good, most of "named" HQ are solid. Only "Lord" seems to be a pointless atm (he is cheap - but i see no point taking him instead of overlord or cryptek). So it's just up to you. If you want go for Decurion, you'll need Overlord or CCB, Nemesor, Stormlord, Tranzyn or Traveller so you'll probably want one of them at start. Cryptek (and Szeras and Orikan) is good start for non-decurion army.
For a "decurion" (new codex formation), in addition of battleforce and immortals you'll need tomb blades box. It's not a tax - they are awesome in current meta, as they will #REKT eldar scatterbikes. Later you'll probably want more.
Also you'll need one "auxillary" force. Cheapest thing is to buy another set of Immortal/Deathmark and make 5 deathmarks. In my opinion, it's best to buy warrior set instead - from battleforce make immortals and use deathmark space parts (weapon, head, back) and 5 warrior bodies to make ddeathmarks, they will look fine and you will get 7 bonus warriors and 2 scarabs. If you want some fun, you can also buy second CCB set (if you bought CCB as your HQ), make doomsday ark from battleforce and 2 A-Barks and you'll get some heavy firepower. It's more for fun, beacause point-wise ghost ark is much better choice.
Overall, Necron is very noob-friendly as most units are strong and easy to equip. I don't get why people recomend marines for newcomers, they are so hard to equip. Necrons are rly easy. There are some exceptions, in current codex if you want strong army avoid:
- Monolith (poor brick, i love it look and portal mobility, but it's not worth 200 points when D is so common)
- Obelisk/T-Vault (same as above)
- FW stuff (current FW necron sets are really below average)
- Praetorians (currently according to RAW their Rod of Covenant weapon is broken. Their interaction with Night Scythe is also a mystery. Don't take it with mentioned options as it can easly turn game into law court. If you use them on foot/deep strike with void/casters they are fine)
Decurion is very good start, i can tell by myself. You will get strong bonus and solid list without thinking about it (you have a little to add/remove at lower point limits). Later, experienced players usually prefer CAD/Mephrit Cohort (shield of baal) for more flexibility.
If you want flexibility fast and want to skip decurion, Cryptek, Szeras or Orikan is must-have (or 2).
If your group is very competitive and you want to win take one or both of those formations:
- Canoptek Harvest (3-6 wraiths, spyder, scarab unit)
- Destroyer Cult (D-Lord and min 9 destroyer + some heavy if you want)
D-Cult is very expensive, Harvest is cheap (as you usually already have scarabs anyway) and i can recommend it. Both formations can be used alone or in decurion.
Good luck with your tomb dynasty!

Okay, some might be below average Necron codex but not unplayable
For competitive play - Nemesor is one of the best atm.
Orikan - also sees play in lychstar
Szeras - good for warrior blob with nemesor outside decurion
Then middle-tier:
Obyron - good with Nemesor, also allow you to have second DS item (as it is named dfferently), good for big points in "lord" slot in Royal Court
Stormlord - good trait, although Nemesor is probabbly better choice for it. His special skill can be game-wining vs horde-type armies.
Fun-tier:
Traveller - his buff is okay and his skill can be fun sometimes... especially if deepstriked with other HQ with item
Trolzyn - well, okay i agree he is bad written now. Can be fun sometimes, but i agree he is "garbage" in competitive play

My advice would be to try and build your collections with the various formations in mind - particularly the Reclamation Legion, as that's the heart of a Decurion.
I'd second the recommendation for a CCB. My suggestion would be to put the Overlord on the base, as he still fits on the barge (can always use a bit of blu- tac on the bottom of his base to secure him better). By not gluing the control panel or main turret, you can switch freely between a CCB and foot overlord + annihilation barge.

Anyway, according to RAW there is strict rule about weapons with multiple profiles:
Some weapons can be used in different ways, representing different power settings or
types of ammo. Some weapons can be used in combat as well as shooting. Where this is
the case, there will be a separate line in the weapon’s profile for each, and you can choose
which to use each turn.
RoC is 100% weapon like in this rule (two profiles, two lanes for each). Some tournaments and people won't allow you to shoot/overwatch and fight with RoC in same turn and they have right RAW -wise. It's obviously error from GW but as "we make models not games" company we probably won't see FAQ

The necon battleforce is a great start to any necron force, especially now that the decurion is a thing.
I personally like to run mine with the warriors in ghost arks, and the immortals in a night scythe.
If you are looking for competitiveness, then 3 formations really come to mind:
- The decurion - I already mentioned this, the decurion is the base of competitive necrons. You'll probably want to run it.
- Destroyer cult - simple and effective formation. Stick destroyer lord with some flayed ones for good effect.
- Wraiths + spyder - Wraiths with a 4+ RP roll, do I need to explain this?

Further tips for saving money: Cryptek models are fugly as feth, I'd recommend kitbashing some out of Warrior bodies and leftover bits from a Lychguard/Praetorians kit (Rod of the Covenant is extremely similar to the Cryptek's Staff of Light).
Don't ever EVER buy a Heavy Destroyer or Destroyer Lord upgrade kit, both are hilariously overpriced and look plain BAD. Instead for the Destroyer Lord kitbash a regular Destroyer sans gun arm and bits from the Lychguard/Praetorians kit (Warscythe, some bling, etc), for Heavy Destroyers I used spare Gauss Blasters from my Tomb Blades to extend the Destroyers' Gauss Cannon into a nice looking Heavy Gauss Cannon (another option is to simply use the Heavy Gauss cannons from the Triarch Stalker kit).
Examples:
Crypteks (Finecrap original in the middle for comparison purposes)-
Destroyer Lord-
Heavy Gauss Cannons (left is mine, middle is the Stalker's, right is the regular Gauss Cannon)-

How can people be confused by it?? It's a melee weapon with a shooting attack, the profile is clear on that. I've checked the rules.

One more popular addition is to add deathmarks heads from immortal/deathmark to make cryptek even more similar to original. Good work with destroyers!
@mondo80: They are not confused, they have right. Read the rule i quoted. When someone cite this rule you have to give them right... because this rule exist with wording like this even naming "weapons that can shoot and be used in melee" and forces us to chose profile per turn, not phase. RoC is obviously designed to be used with both profiles, but we don't have rule for it in codex and RB is written like above. Thats why my advice is to avoid RoC in current state. You can argue with this, but arguing isn't fun - and if you face some rule lawyer you won't win because they have right here. Trust me, i tried

Hmm, 500pts is tricky. Without knowing what you're likely to face, it's hard to say.
However, here are some possibilities in terms of formations:
- A Reclamation Legion (you'll have 21pts to spend on upgrading the Overlord and/or Tomb Blades).
- A Destroyer Cut (You'll have 30pts to spend on the Destroyer Lord and/or on upgrading some destroyers to heavy destroyers).
- 2 Canoptek Harvests (You'll have 40 points spare with which to either buy an extra wraith or upgrade some stuff).

Something like that should work, yeah.
Other combinations:

- Gauntlet of the Conflagrator on the D Lord
(Obviously there are more if you don't mind going to 495pts.)

Meh, there are better things to stick a D.Lord in with than FOs. (they already ave Shred, PE's not going to help all that much to warrant adding him there when you could have stuck him somewhere that he could have REALLY shined.)

like? He is a melee unit in a very shooty army. If you are going to use him for more than preferred enemy then you only really have 3 units who want to be getting into cc: flayed ones, wraiths and praetorians.
Wraiths and praetorians are slowed down by his movement, flayed ones are not.
Wraiths and praetorians can deal with any unit they come across, flayed ones cannot deal with heavy MCs or walkers, the D lord can.
Flayed ones are also the easiest option to put in a list, as they include the least baggage.

There are other possibilities:
- I'm sure Lychguard wouldn't object to PE, and they certainly want to be in combat.
- If you stick him with some Deathmarks in reserve, you can bring them in when the enemy deep strikes. If the Deathmarks shoot, then they benefit from PE. And, either way, the D Lord can then break off and assault something in your turn.
- Hell, you could just stick him with some immortals or warriors - they benefit from preferred enemy and he can help defend them in combat.

Yes you can put them in a few places, but none of them are especially more viable than with flayed ones.
Edit: Forgot a big one, fearless for a big blob of flayed ones is great.

None more viable than FOs?
The D.Lord's greatest tactical asset is in his ability to grant PE. Flayed One have practically no use for PE, as they're already rerolling 1s to wound with Shred. How is sticking a D.Lord with them a more viable tactic than sticking him with Deathmarks or Wraiths or one of the several other units who desperately want a way to reroll 1s into possible 6s?
Just stick a regular foot slogging Overlord/Lord with them. Bam. There's your can opener.
... and since when do Destroyer Lords grant Fearless?

There is some great advice here though I think you should try to work out what sort of army you want fairly quickly.
The reclaimation legion is a fantastic choice and is the strongest formation we have. Able to bat hoarde armies away almost effortlessly, very customisable. For the rec. legion you'll need a battleforce, tomb blades and overlord / lord. If you want a solid, no frills army get two battleforce boxes, three boxes of tomb blades and a CCB. Make a CCB, 9 tombblades, 4 warrior blobs, 2 ghost arks, 1 immortals, 1 death marks. That's a solid start.

Ok you are right about fearless. I was under the impression they had it.
Why put him with FO? Because of the reasons already stated.

And those reasons were what, again?
He is a melee unit in a very shooty army
So put him with something else melee that could use PE. It's not like we have a shortage of competent combat units nowadays, and a lot of them could really benefit from rerolls.
flayed ones cannot deal with heavy MCs or walkers, the D lord can.
Anyone with a Warscythe can, there's no reason it must be a Destroyer Lord.
Why SHOULDN'T you stick a D.Lord in with Flayed Ones?
• majority toughness 4
• they don't have much need for PE
• prevents them from infiltrating
• slows him down
• susceptible to sweeping advance
... the pros do not seem to outweigh the cons...

To be fair, the only units that won't slow the D Lord down are Destroyers.

I've been running Reclamation Legion + Destroyer Cult in most of my post-new codex games, and the best D Lord strategy IME is to bring one bare-bones (or maybe with a Res Orb), and plunk him right down in a blob of 20 Warriors, and watch the PE rerolls pile up.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
@OP: My advice to new Necron players has been as follows. Get your hand on the codex, and first procure the required contents of the Reclamation Legion (this can be had by buying the Necron Battleforce, a box of Tomb Blades, and an HQ of your choice...Nemesor Zandrekh is my go-to HQ).
Then identify one of the Auxiliary formations that catches your fancy, and collect that.
The new Necron codex makes collecting Necrons very easy...the formations are basically mini-shopping lists. While this takes some of the thought out of building an army list, since its basically built for you by the codex, it does take away alot of the "what should I get next?" questions.
Of course, you don't have to use the Decurion system, but there's no real reason not to except personal fluffy reasons, and/or the desire to pull your punches with opponents who don't like playing against the new Decurion Necrons (and if this board is any indication, there are lots of people who don't).
