House legislators to file HB2 repeal Monday

Monday, April 25th 2016, 6:46 am CDT
By: WECT StaffCONNECT

RALEIGH, NC (WECT) -
Representatives Darren Jackson, Graig Meyer, Susi Hamilton, and Grier Martin will file a bill Monday morning to repeal House Bill 2 (Public Facilities Privacy Act) in its entirety.

As part of this effort, the four Representatives will hold a joint press conference on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the NCGA pressroom to further explain beginning the effort to repeal House Bill 2.

"The damage to NC’s reputation and economy has been swift and is growing exponentially. House Bill 2 is bad for all NC citizens and it is bad for all NC businesses." This, according to a press release sent out by the North Carolina Democratic Party.

This press conference will be open to all media as well as the general public.

We have 2 threads already, sort of, about bathrooms - which seems like a lot for a wargaming forum - but one is really about Target, and one is about Curt Schilling and how his first amendment rights are being totally violated by the thing he said. So, here is the one that actually sort of started the debate, with an actual meaningful update.

Something about how passing a bill in a few hours with virtually no discussion, no public input, not really even reading it, sort of a bad idea, something something.

If only the left cared about economic issues for the working class with such passion.
If only the right cared about economic issues for the working class with such passion.

And people wonder why Trump and Sanders have such support.

HB2 was bad legislation that was passed in response to bad legislation and revolves around the politicizing of a nonexistent problem.

I'll be happy to see the demise of HB2 but I'm sure some other manufactured wedge issue will replace it for the same reason that HB2 existed, it's an election year.

The parties need people to get worked up over wedge issues to push greater turnout. The actual plights and concerns of the electorate take a backseat to the imperative of parties maintaining their political power.

Assuming this actually goes through (I have doubts - the last thing most politicians would ever want to admit during an election year is that they made a mistake), it's a quick resolution to this poorly-drafted problem. Regardless of how they attempt to address (or not) more complicated issues like financial inequality, this is still worth cleaning up.

I really hope this happens. That bill is awful.

It did, however, help me identify terrible people on my social media accounts. I love when people post pictures of castration tools and say "we can fix this problem".

Thatsdisturbing. I thought social media was about cute cat videos and Trump telling people how stupid his opponents were.

It's not gonna go through. The Democrats are really outnumbered in the NC legislature.

Not a backpedal.

The four Representatives who introduced the bill are Democrats, part of a group of Democrats who were against the bill in the first place.

Don't worry, after the election the normal services for cat videos will be restored. Thank you. Management.

I recall in MN when during an election year (2014?) the R's put a Constitutional Amendment around Same-Sex marriage and Voter ID onto the ballot expecting it to drive their base out to vote in droves. The plan worked and the R base went to the polls in droves, and give it was a mid-term the R majority should have been sealed in MN. One problem, these Amendments drove the D's base out in bigger droves and a mid-term which should have been a R lock ended up being a total route statewide!

This whole Bathroom Bill reminds me of that scenario.

Toilets (and their users) have been a regional issue for some time. Now they are exploding onto the national scene. Why can't we all just appreciate the quality of leadership it takes to address this pressing issue?

Hopefully, we will soon find out about European bathrooms and bathrooms in Asia so we can put it into a global context.

What I think is funny about all this stuff is outside of hair styles, its pretty hard to tell the sex of the morbidly obese.

Corey with a mop-top and an amorphous shape could be anything, yet nobody ever had problems with them using the bathroom.

Be an out and proud trans-woman, and "oh my god my daughters! I don't know what exactly, but my daughters, my hypothetical daughters!"

I understand how people can be uncomfortable by trans issues, but any even remotely passable trans person was always gonna use whatever bathroom they want. And if non-passable, well then your life likely sucks a lot more than bathroom issues anyway.

It's more about the media circus than the effectiveness of any boycotts.

Paypal threatens to shut down one of their offices in N.C.? Irrelevant, since most North Carolinians don't care since they can still use PayPal online, office or no office.

Bruce Springsteen boycotts? No big deal for the State, since he's long since been irrelevant, is reduced to playing gigs for aging fans from the 70's and 80's, and a lot of young folks born after the mid-nineties have never heard of him or his E-Street Band, except maybe "Oh, he's that old dude from the 80's".

No, it's the media circus and bad publicity that's driving the change. It's a headache for the politicos, because of all the attention and panicking of their campaign contributors in the tourist industry. That's why the law is going bye-bye, despite those of us who either oppose it (like me), or don't give a damn to begin with, are in the minority among North Carolina's voting population. For some in both houses of the General Assembly, it's going to be a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. More than a few will have issues when their elections come up if they backtrack on their votes in support of the law.

The Democratic Party is the largest party in the State.

In the South, "Democrat" doesn't necessarily equate "Liberal".

There are plenty of old school, conservative leaning Democrats in North Carolina. And many of them supported this law.

Paypal did not shut down an office. They were going to build an office and provide more jobs in the state, but have since retracted. That is major for a party that runs on job creation.

Bruce Springsteen is still a big deal because the older he gets, the less shows he is going to play. On top of that, many millennials do know who he is and listen to him. Stop trying to discredit something based on a generation. Remember, if your parents listen to somebody then the odds are you have heard them before. Bruce Springsteen cancelling a gig in a city is a lot of lost revenue for the city. You are not looking at the whole picture here.

Thank you for the correction on the status on the Paypal office. And the loss of 400 potential jobs isn't a good thing. But considering that only a fraction of those 400 positions would be filled with North Carolina natives (which is true of most companies in the United States when they set up shop in a State), it isn't as big a blow as some believe. Raleigh will still get plenty of tax revenue from other areas of taxation.

Here is the statement from PayPal's CEO Dan Schulman on the decision to nix locating an office in North Carolina:

“Becoming an employer in North Carolina, where members of our teams will not have equal rights under the law, is simply untenable,” PayPal CEO Dan Schulman said in a statement. “The new law perpetuates discrimination, and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture.”

PayPal is just blowing smoke out of their asses on this issue. First off, the law doesn't address the relationship between private employers and their employees in the private sector. Local governments in North Carolina cannot force private companies to obey such ordinances, because State anti-discrimination laws take precedence, and PayPal is free to set up it's employee restrooms how ever they see fit on their own property.

And second, PayPal, despite their lofty statements of transgender equality and equality under the law, does business in Saudi Arabia and 24 other countries where homosexual and transsexual behavior is illegal. In five of those countries, the penalty is death. That smacks of hypocrisy and PR spin from where I'm sitting, to make a fuss about State and local laws considering. That also tells me that the office that was going to be set up in North Carolina wasn't critical to PayPal's operations, since they are making a move over a law that doesn't affect their employees, which was their concern based on Schulman's statement. They can afford to skip out to score brownie points with the public.

As far as Bruce Springsteen goes, the number of shows he plays and his aging is largely irrelevant, except to the aforementioned aging fanbase. And note that I said "a lot", not "all" millennials. I have encountered plenty of millennials PERSONALLY who either wasn't familiar with him or his work, or merely heard of him. And I don't know many millennials who consider themselves fans of Springsteen, except for a handful I've encountered that are into "classic" rock. All of the above is merely a drop in the bucket compared to his heyday. So, yes. When it comes to the big picture of popular music, he's largely irrelevant in 2016. Just like many other celebs from his era.

Also, one gig in one city isn't the "whole picture", since it doesn't affect the State as a whole in a big way. I hate that local businesses are going to lose out. But the politicians in Raleigh don't have an aging musician or any one city on their radar. They are looking at the "whole picture", and it consists of negative nationwide coverage, and the possible implications down the road, for the State as a whole. Especially in the major areas of tourism and industry.

As a North Carolina native and resident, I'm opposed to the law, and am glad to see it go. It was silly and a waste of the taxpayers time we pay the General Assembly for when they are in session. However, I know why they are backing down and the resulting crap they are going to catch from their constituents come election time. Which, to be honest, is no skin off my back. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Okay, you are just wrong. It affects their employees if they live in the state. It may not bother them at the private business, but it certainly does when they are out in the community. Stating that this will not have any impact on their employees is just ridiculous. These people still have to live in the community.

As for Bruce Springsteen, you seem to have this idea that his fan base has moved on or doesn't go to concerts or something. The man is still breaking attendance records in places. He is not just a trivial musician floating off in to the sunset. He is still a big star. That is a lot of revenue lost by the city and the state through taxes. Lots of people travel to see big shows if they are not available in their states. That means people making vacation plans; booking hotels, eating out, and attending other events. You are attempting to trivialize a matter that is in no way trivial. The tourist industry has lost a lot from him. On top of that, he is not the only one doing this. Ringo Star has cancelled shows. Jimmy Buffet is playing the two he has booked then refusing the book more until the law is repealed.

You are really trying to blow this off, you really shouldn't.

Considering they asked her for 'government ID' to prove her gender, and many states allow their state ID to be the gender you identify with, not your birth genitals or even what you have now, they would be violating their own law potentially if they used ID alone.

Seems like 'junk check' has become a reality as that is the only way to prove the current NC law, which of course is insane and going to be used to harass gay and lesbians along with transgender people.

Violation of federal civil rights laws-violating her civil rights. Thats the same tactic the fed used against state agencies in the 60s up to now.

The cops aren't stationed at public bathrooms here in NC. For the cops to show up at that bathroom somebody had to call them. If the cops respond to a call of somebody complaining of a possible man in the ladies bathroom and when they show up they find somebody dressed to look like a man and refusing to identify herself as a woman then the cops are going to ask that person to leave. That's the sensible response from the cops when they have an uncooperative person in the bathroom. If she had identified herself as a woman they would have let her stay her refusal to do so is why they asked her to leave. Nobody was arrested, nobody was handcuffed or mistreated. Somebody felt the need to call the cops so they arrived and the person in question was uncooperative so they asked her to leave. No big deal, certainly nothing to substantiate a lawsuit.

This creates a completely new way to troll the system. Call the police and tell them you think XXX may be a man/woman/transgender going into the lavatory that doesn't match their chromosome count, and ask them to attend ASAP to sort out the situation.

Maybe the police will quickly realise the law is a crock of gak and decide to spend their time on something more useful.
