Space Wolves are the only ones I can think of but, while I like them, I was wandering if there were any other armies that use Norse style mythology and work like Vikings

It was the Space Wolves, but then the wolfy wolfdoom of wolfatron happened and the wolfageddon began.

In 40k? Not really. Even Valhallan Ice Warriors of the Imperial Guard are based on Soviet Red Army soldiers from WW2, not vikings like you'd guess with their names. You'd have to make your own Viking-themed army, using Chaos Marauder and Space Wolves bits.

I think in fantasy there were chaos marauders which were based on vikings, you could bring that over into 40k with cultists or even Chaos marines, but as said above there aren't any current force based on them

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

I would say old school Space Wolves. You could avoid the Space Wolf codex altogether and simply use some older Space Wolf models to create your own chapter.

Space Wolves still have the Viking stuff under all the bad writing and community rubbish.

Spacewolves arewolf likewolf spacefang vikingmurderwolfs.

You just need to get used to including 'wolf' or 'fang' in every word.

Used to be Space Wolves before they went over the top with the werewolf elements.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

They still have Viking elements. You just have to look through all the silly Wolf stuff.

Space Wolves, definitely.

Their home planet Fenris is covered in Ice, and the ice shifts leaving sections of inhabitants without any land. They then raid other spots of civilization, and overtake their land. From the glyphs to the mentality, all very Viking.

There's always Khorne and his berserkers, although unlike space wolves they sorta went in the other direction, only having token mentions of being vikings instead of being WOLFY WOLF WOLF Vikings.

They're more gladiators than Vikings. Fantasy Chaos are from the northern lands and have a Viking flavor, but Angron and his boys are all pit fighting gladiators, more akin to the barbarian tribes fought and imprisoned by the Romans.

You could do a Traitor warband that broke from the SW chapter during the Heresy. Those things happen.

You could use either SW or CSM rules to field it, depending on how you see them.

You could get really heretical and make a more "modern" Company that goes Traitor.

Or just play straight SW and ignore all the wolfy stuff.

Plenty of people modify official cannon in their armies. Just easy up on the pelts, don’t take thunderwolves, and you’ll be fine.

If you set down a viking themed space wolf army and told me “I’m doing the SW as they were before GW turned the werwolf up to 11” I, (and I suspect most people) would be fine with that.

if you want to stretch theme, Dark Eldar do the get into the longboat to pillage and plunder thing. They might live the viking lifestyle, but the fluff and play are pretty different.

I would say one viking army is enough.

If we fail to anticipate the unforeseen or expect the unexpected in a universe of infinite possibilities, we may find ourselves at the mercy of anyone or anything that cannot be programmed, categorized or easily referenced.

This is what I do. Screw GW and what they have done to the wolves. Nothing wrong with a few pelts here and there. Not to mention all the runes and talismans. My wolves are much more Viking related instead of werewolf and I e always played them that way.

Really, if you don't play CyberWolves, Fenrision Wolves and Thunderwolves, the Space Wolves are a Viking army with a wolf motif. Even the Wulfen just become Beserkers with a lot of body hair.

Tau and Space Wolves since 5th Edition.

Yeah, like everyone else said. The original fluff for the Space Wolves was all Viking styled. Sadly, they are merely Werewolves in space now...

ok, cant believe im the only one to think dark eldar? They ride in, kill and rape everyone in their way, take everything of value, including slaves, then f*** off back where they came from before any local power can react. Very viking to me

I mentioned them as an option upthread.

The problem with them is there is zero connection visually to vikings. Or from a fluff/background POV. Just the basic pillage and burn MO. But when most people say “I want to play a viking army” they want a big guy with a beard putting an axe through someone. DE fail to deliver that. They also play very much like a glass hammer, again, not a big viking theme.

I guess you could trick out raiders to look like longboats. Not that far of a stretch. Mix up some old dark/wood elf WHFB guys for a little savagery.

While Necrons are definitely more inspired by Egyptian motif, their Ghost Arks with their flayers sticking out look a bit like Viking Long Ships while units like the Lychguard have their Shields and Swords (which look more like axes) which seem to be somewhat Viking like. If only Lychguard could go inside Ghost Arks then it would be perfect for that playstyle. You could roll in an ASOIAF/Game of Thrones theme with the Ironborn (Vikings in Westeros) and their whole "What is dead may never die..." to fit with the whole Necron being lifeless robots who reanimate when fallen.

Granted most of the rest of the Necron unit list isn't all that Viking like but it would be really cool to see some cool conversion work done to fit the theme.

I disagree - berserkers are "All offence, no care for protecting themselves". That's very Glass Cannon - their only protection is that they feel no pain (geddit?).

You could easily do a Viking-style dark eldar army. It won't be great on the battlefield, because CC is awful, but it could be very cool. Mostly built around Wyches and Wracks deploying out of Raiders, with Jetbikes with capture nets (I forget the names) in support.

Model the Wyches up with furs, axes and small shields (Wyches naturally have 6++ invun in CC, do't they? That's the same as a Combat Shield), give the Raiders raised dragon-head prows and shielded sides, model your Wracks with furs and giant axes as berserkers.

Not just Vikings. Elves going a-viking. XD
