Last year I co-organized an event in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada called the Beer & Pretzels Open. I'm doing it again this year (Nov 5th for anyone interested), but I need some help on ideas for a "joke list". Last year I was the odd-man; in the event that the tournament had an odd number of players, rather than giving one player the bye and having them sit a game out, I would join into the tournament so that all players got to play all of their games. That's what they came to do, after all! But at the same time, it wouldn't be fair that a player who should have received the bye get beaten by the bye. As such, I specifically made a joke list - something that would be fun to play against. I made THE LORDS OF CHAOS! I ran every Chaos Space Marine special character I had (Abaddon, Typhus, Kharne, Ahriman) and kept them together as a squad joined to Abaddon. It was hilarious, lots of fun, and was made all the funnier by the fact that NONE of their abilities are complimentary, outside Abaddon's PE(Space Marines).

So, this year I want to run another joke army, but different from last time. Only caveat - no Space Marines. Sudbury is full of Space Marine players, so bringing "another Space Marine list", even as a joke one, just wouldn't be as funny. Here's the armies I have access to:

- Chaos Space Marines
- Tyranids
- Orks
- Harlequins
- Eldar
- Astra Militarum
- Assassins

I don't just want something that's "bad", it's got to be "bad" in a unique way! Like the fact that the Lords of Chaos actually don't function all that well together. I've got at least one of most models from these armies, but not necessarily all. As such, please don't post complete army lists - just give me some ideas to work with!

Orks: Can you bring 1850 points of ork boys. Just a ton of boys with shootas and/or Sluggas?

Same question for Nids and Genestealers and/or Termagants?

Bring Fabius Bile with cultists, chaos spawns, Warp Talons, one HUGE squad of enhanced Chaos marines, Mutilators and Obliterators.

Say it's his mutant menagerie.

That was last year. Not sure if the facebook page is up this year, but it's 1500 points this year.

I could bring just a ton of boyz, but having played both with and against that list, I don't think it's actually that fun to play in a tournament setting do to the length of time it takes to play. I considered doing a spawning list for Tyranids as well, but again, my experience with that kind of list is that it isn't really a joke list like what I'm looking for. But thanks for trying so far!

That's an interesting idea! No Fabius Bile, but I'm sure I can get one purchased and put together in time for the day, and laugh when it all goes horribly wrong! This list definitely has to foot-slog it. Wouldn't have it any other way!

The bile idea is something I've wanted to do for a literal half-decade now, I just never had the resources and other things keep coming up. If you can make it, Make Me Proud >:3

No synapse Nids would be a fun choice. OOE, deathleaper, rippers, stealers and spore mines as the bulk and then whatever else you need to fill points knowing full well they will probably get nowhere real fast with no synapse support.

That's honestly not the worst idea! I'd have to pick up a Deathleaper to make the list something a bit more interesting, and paint up a LOT of my unpainted Nid models, but that would definitely be a unique way to play Nids.

I have a similar army

Old One Eye leading 3 squads of 3 Screamer Killers each. With 2 Warrior Squads as Troop Choices, but you can easily sub out the warriors for rippers or Mucolids and then bring in a Haruspex to further the big beastie theme.

I think an iconic looking, classic Nid force could be a lot of fun. Nothing in the air, just some waves of gribbles and a few old school MCs.

Run an 1850 list of nothing but cultist

Two of the assassins formation and one harlequins heroes path formation.

While this would look stellar (well, assuming my Nid paint jobs were better), it doesn't really feel like a joke list. Just an under-powered one.

Issue is that it takes a long time to move things around, which slows down the hilarity of a list like this. However, even still, I'd much rather run Guard backed by a bunch of Commissars for executing duty!

I thought about this! I do have access to one of each assassin, and the hero's path, but I'm both short on having a second of each assassin, and this year's tourney is 1500 points with max of 2 detachments (with no repeats). I could do Assassins + Masque though, and load up the Mask with Independent Characters.

No no on the contrary when playing with an army like that, you don't worry about exact movements, just put one unit up and shove the rest into a pile, it's totally fine lol

True. I guess I shifted from “joke list” to “Lists you would like to play against, but nobody actually fields”

My go-to joke army is da grotvolushun:

Warboss with Fearless Banner (modeled as the gretchin banner waver from Gorkamorka)

Mad Dok Grotsnik (Custom modeled from the Gnoblars standing on each other's shoulders, WYSIWYG with power Klaw shared between two arms and gun held by attendant)

2x 30 man blobs of gretchin, each joined by one of the fearless characters.

Then every other unit is Grot Mega-Tanks, Grot Tank Battle Mobs, Mek Gunz and Killa Kanz

Actually a really, really fun horde army to play that can answer a surprising number of opponents fairly well. nobody expects sixty gretchin to the face.

A themed Nid list done right would be cool. But i like the idea of max Carnifexes stomping forward. I keep meaning to try a Nid large blast list which would be terrible but fun for me as i don't get many blasts. All foc slots have access to large blasts with 36"+ ranges.

A Guard tank list would be also cool, but maybe not original enough.

There's also the all Death Company lists and all Termies.

Maybe try an think about what things people don't normally get to play against.

If CtA alllies are allowed, you could get very silly fast. Gribblies, gretchin, conscripts, zombies etc

Try every phoenix lord and the avatar of khain. It comes out to 1400 points so you would need to throw in like 11 storm guardians for them to join to.

Or try taking a ton of biovores, harpies, and spore mines. Purposefully aim so that you are most likely to miss and spawn more spore mines. Use the formation of spore mines that makes them come back when they die.

I used that once, my opponent nicknamed it "The Lonely Valentines Day" list. You get a cookie if you get where he got that name.

Spam ork cads with HQ mek + Trp 2x grots Elite BURNA's Fortification maxed out Crates with fuel tanks.
Make it look like orky Burnaman and build a maze on the table with all those crates. Watch how nothing has loS and how all your burna's have torrent.

Army of the Laughing God? Harlequin leaders with escaped prisoners from the Dark Eldar fighting dens. you'd only be able to take infantry but I'm sure you could figure a way to fluffy vehicles in somehow.

Cowards list.

Unbound DE, nothing but Sslyth, Ur Ghuls, masterless beastpacks, and grotesques.

Leadership is all super low, like 3-6.

Cadian Battle Group with nothing but Company Command Squads. Just give each other orders all day long.

An Ork Mad Max Army, with 10-man Boyz mounted in Trukks for Troop Choices, Buggies in fast attack, Battle Wagons in Heavy Support and Nob Bikers in Elites.

For an Ork funsies list you could just bring every RANDOM item the orks have, like Big Mekz with SAGs and Fighta Bombas, give a character the shiny shoota, bring in some Mek gunz equipped with any of the plethora of D6 or 2D6 or 4+D6 weapons we have access to. Then Weird boyz SO MANY WEIRD BOYZ!. Want to talk about random? Weirdboyz are your boy. Also probably get some Looted Wagonz as well for those all importat "DONT PRESS DAT!" rolls.

It's a tide of spores - won't win (best I've gotten is a draw) but it's fething fun to play and play against.

My lonely valentines version use only the Spore Mine Formation. The one that only has mucolids and spore mines and they come back on a roll of a 4+. Ehehehehehe.

Also another one I wanted to try out: The Scalpel Squadron from the Haemonculus Coven. I doubt anyone would be expecting Drop Pod assault from the Dark Eldar.

When playing against my 10 year old I sometimes run my Gue'vesa only (using IG/AM codex). Since they are human Tau forces they all aspire to be "fire warriors" so Psykers running pyromancy, command squads with flamers, squads with flamers, special weapons squads with flamers, chimeras with flamers, hellhounds etc with hydras and Leman Russ Battle Tanks with heavy flamer sponsons in support.
