Hello all, I'm looking to get some thoughts from people on how they carry their armies around.

I run Imperial Guard, typically using massed formations, as much stuff as I can pack into a list. So my typical carry requirements are around 150 infantry (soon to be more, 200+) and 6 to 9 vehicles. I started building my own "carry trays", however they are getting ever bulkier as I expand them (4 trays, stacked, take up 16"x8" and can carry 100-120 infantry.) I was looking to build a vehicle tray, but quite unfortunately that is looking to be 16"x16", and will only be able to carry 7 vehicles +heavy weapons teams/sentinels. To sum it up briefly, while effective, it seems like my carrying case set up is getting a wee bit too bulky. (It's looking like fully complete, the set up will be 32"x16"x6".)

So, what do you guys use to carry your miniatures?

...and as a bonus question, am I complaining too much about my current carry set up?

Or is it really not as oversized as I think it is for what I'm carrying?

I use citadels cases becuase they are honestly pretty good

Here are my suggestions to you, both pros and cons

GW/citadel case: pretty good all around, foam is pretty versatile, down side it's kinda pricy and you run outta room fast

Battle foam: pretty cheap and custom made to put your army perfectly, down side, the foam trays only fit the units they were made for so you are stuck

Shoe box: great, cheap, easy as hell, down side of you care about your models they can get banged up

Magnetic strip and toat: now this is a cool one that has multiple benefits. Get a large flat toat from Walmart, then get some magnetic strips, cut them down to the length of the toat and hot glue them down at the bottom of the toat. Next hot glue washes to the bottom of the bases of your figures, tha why they magnetize to the strips. Great for large armies and give your models weight. Down side, takes some leg work to get set up, only secure if you don't jostle them around.

I put a good deal of work into my custom cases.

First, I get a tool box or tackle box that can fit my army.
Second I get some foam, usually the hardware store has AC foam that is easy to cut and comes in either sheets or long blocks.
Third, I arrange the models into their case and plan out what size pieced of foam I need. Then I cut those pieces
Lastly, I use hot glue to stick the foam pieces into the sides of the boxes.

These hold just as well as the Citadel or Battlefoam cases, but without the unnecessary bulk. I easily get 3000pt+ worth of models into a single tool box roughly 2'L x 1'H x 1'W and a single tackle box 1'W x 1.5'L x 3-4"thick. The tool box is for vehicles, MCs or "bulky" models, while the tackle box is for Infantry.

My Space Wolves travel in fishing tackle tool chests with a bit of rubber underneath them. Honestly though, space marine models are pretty sturdy and the odd chip or blemish just adds character to the Wolves.

My Tyranids I'm constantly looking for something better, they catch and break on foam, rubber doesn't offer enough cusion, they're just terrible models to transport.

This is what I'm doing. It take a good bit of work to do right, but it is so worth it. Complete customization, can work with any and every army you have, and it protects the models if you get the stronger magnetic strips to hold them securely.

i use foam and a satchel. it fits all my templates, dice, rulebooks, ipad, and of course, my army. No stratches yet.

I use KR Multicase. Fantastic cases and wonderful customer support. I just have the double case but I order foam trays and switch them out when I go to games.

I have not had good luck with Battlefoam and their customer support. Their cases are fine but I prefer KR.

Magnets.

Get
-a biscuit tin
- some 2mm x 3mm or 6mm x 3mm rare earth magnets from ebay (about £5 for 50)
- some superglue
- glue the magnets to bottom or bases
- wrap round a bit of green stuff to make double sure

I play Orks, so boyz need 1 x 2x3mm, Kanz need 2 x 6x3 magents.

You can fit about 90 boyz or 24 bikz in a single tin. Trukz are harder to do, but do-able. It is so much easier to store. For travel (by car) I load the tins I need into a large holdall.

I use a Battlefoam case with a mix of precut and pluck foam trays. Even so, there are still models that just don't like the case (Bloodletters and Kroot). Battlefoam really is good stuff, if a bit expensive.

GW Hardshell case for my Chaos

My Imperial Guard don't travel.

I use a mix of Sabol and KR. I prefer KR most of the time, but their pick and pluck isn't the best (it has a weird pattern, instead of being a simple grid of squares that you can pluck out.)

My large Tyranid models, honestly, just get carefully placed into a large plastic toolbox. No foam, no magnets. They have a fairly glossy finish (I use a gloss top coat and I mix a little floor wax into a black ink wash at one stage of painting), so they're pretty impervious to light wear. I don't want to encourage you to just throw the things around, but a good primer and top coat will do a surprisingly good job at protecting most models.

Many gamers/collectors find it beneficial to find the most rusty bucket they can. You'll want to make sure there are holes and jagged bits on it along with a dodgy handle. Next pour in a layer of sand and driveway gravel in order to cushion the first layer of figures. Dump in your first layer of figures, it should only be one figure thick but cover the first layer of sand and grit. Continue alternating a layer of sand and gravel with a layer of figures until your bucket is full. Finally you'll want to seal the whole thing with duct tape, latex caulk, and drywall mud. Your figures will then be protected from any and all damage that could be caused by the outside world. You may want to give your bucket a good shake and bang it around a bit just to make sure that the contents settle and are secure.

This was physicially painful to read, good sir. Why not just encase the figures in concrete? Complete protection.

On topic. I use KR Multicase. I've only had models explode a few times, when the case was dropped.

This. KR foam is softer than the alternatives, and custom-cut shapes are great. Haven't had a broken model yet.

I tried it all, and dislike most for all sorts of reasons currently I use wooden wine boxes + bubble plastic. This I like, its small and sturdy jet no models seem to get damaged.

I'm going to echo others; KR is great. get yourself a nice case(such as the black one Nevelon and I have), and a bunch of m4t's and some (IG2+IG4)'s. fill the rest to taste.The soft case comes with 2 "1 KRU" cardboard boxes, intended to be extra support for the models within the case, this helps a lot with set-up when you get to your game. as your army gets bigger, you can get more of the cardboard cases(really sturdy, actually) and literally switch out the CB cases inside the nice case.

I have the old limited edition red army transport case from GW. Always loved it for the majority of my models. For all the bigger/other stuff I just stick em in a fishing gear box as they don't seem to require quite as much protection as the others.
When I lived in jersey I just took some packing foam and cut out shapes for the few models I had and put the foams in cardboard boxes of the appropriate size. My 100 mantic Zombies just get dumped into the cardboard box they came in cause if they lose an arm or head in transit, who the hell cares...they're zombies! Hahaha

I use rather large Rubbermaid plastic tote with lid and put my models in pluck foam trays that I made (need to make more of them as im lazy and plucking foam is a royal PITA). I also have my Tau suits/tanks in a tool box (the tool tray hold crisis suits and their weapons, the big part underneath has the tanks), and I have a plastic box that came with a power supply for some of my Orks as it has a plastic tray that holds my Meganobz, Flash Gitz, and some Stormboyz while the main part is foam padded with space for my Killa Kans, Warbikes, and Deffcoptas. Sadly a lot of my bigger Grey Knights and Space Wolves are sitting in a GW cardboard box that I put inside that Rubbermaid plastic toat. I tend to put the vehicles im taking with me on top of my foam trays but again I need to cut foam for them.

So far nothing has been damaged in transit besides maybe a hand full of arms popping off (super glued) but it takes 2 seconds to repair them and none of the paint has chipped.

I can get 8 tanks into a cardboard case, 200 basic IG troops into another, and both cases into the backpack.
A Valkyrie and up to 100 troops in another case. The WoM trenches, emplacement and bunker with room for troops goes in another. They go into a 2-case carry bag. They sell bags for up to 4 cases (maybe more).
Etc.

I store mine on a board when i go to tournaments, but when at home they are on shelves and i kind of go "shopping" from my shelves to put what i want on my board. Easier to place stuff on it as they die and be ready for the next game than dealing with foams.
