Armies:
Guard
Dark Eldar

Scenario: Big Guns

First Turn: Dark Eldar

Deployment

Guard

The heavy tank rolled into position as Pask looked out over the forces arrayed before him. It had taken some time to set up such a large army and they could already see the enemy starting to move in the distance. Flanked by two of his most able Leman Russ crews, with a Manticore concealed in the forest behind and Devildogs idling in front Pask was confident of victory. One of the Infantry Commanders squads was in the trees protecting Pask and the rest of the tanks from close assault, whilst the bulk of the Infantry had arrayed forwards. A teeming mass of conscripts filling the valley ahead, backed by a core of well trained Guard Infantry with the command group in the centre. Pask saw the infantry commander talking into his radio, what was the man's name again? Ahh yes, Frederick.

Commander Frederick heard the burst of chatter and looked to Lord Commissar Baldwin for a moment, then back to his comms officer. "That's the ratlings in position, sir." The man said, snapping a salute "With the Scions up above ready for the drop everyone's in position." at that moment Baldwin broke in "About damn time." he glowered over the other men present, hand resting on his pistol "The enemy are almost upon us and this rabble are barely worthy of their boots let alone the uniform!" When his gesture took in the Guardsmen as well as the conscripts Frederick saw the comms officer's mouth twitch in anger and felt his own stomach tighten. There was no back talking a Lord Commissar, but these were damn fine men. To cover his irritation he barked an order "Get ready to move out, let's steal a march on this Xenos scum." As soon as he gave the order he knew it was too late, a vast Xenos war engine floated silently into view, some kind of massive barge with towering hulks of muscle covering in the deck. He swallowed hard and the killing began.

Dark Eldar

Urien rubbed his hands together as he silently glided across the battlefield. Looking at the nearby Coven vehicles, with his own special cyber-organic adaptations he grinned. There were many humans here, much prey and he had all sorts of new toys to test out. New Grotesques with an unusual blend of digestive acids that they could pump out of their liquefiers, straight from their stomachs, adapted Scourges with better feet for perching and he and even managed to get his hands on some of those Swooping Hawks that the Craftworlders were so proud of. These ones were working for the imbecile Ynarri faction, but that hadn't made them any less receptive to new upgrades to their eyes. Not that they had been exactly willing, but... well. It worked. Probably.

This battle was also being attended by Yrvaine, an ambassador for the Ynarri who was seeking to convert him to her cause. She had been making overtures to his scourges, he was sure, but they could always be replaced and he rarely had an opportunity to study such an extraordinary specimen. It might happen that an accident befell her on the battlefield, then he could conduct... repairs. The deranged Haemonculus chuckled again and looked for the first time at the enemy. Delicious. Hundreds of new test subjects. He might get a whole new crop of playthings out of this!

Spoiler:
Urien advances amidst his vehicles, watching as his grotesques unleash a torrent of poison melting dozens of the filthy Mon'Keigh and rendering others catatonic with fear. Perfect victims, just as intended. He barely registers the storm of splinter fire that tears apart the small group of mutants drawing a bead on him in the ruin, not a thought given to the fact that such a threat to him, personally has been eliminated. He watches the Darklight dance through the sky but barely pays it a moment's mind as he focuses on the possibilities offered by the dozens of new test subjects writhing in agony before him.

Meanwhile, Yrvaine steps lightly from her transport, glad to be away from the monstrous creatures created by the horrid haemonculus. She walks softly into the ruins just as her Scourges descend to perch around her. The changes wrought in their forms fascinate her, somehow both repugnant and beautiful. She smiles softly at a solarite and draws on her considerable might to guide him in selecting a target for his unit of Scourges. "Fire she whispers in their mind" and an Imperial tank explodes in a shower of debris. Mor Darklight streams from the mighty Tantalus and the other Scourge squad and in the distance, Yrvaine feels the sweet surge of death, as it is consumed by the Yncane rising from the ashes of the first wrecked tank.

Looking over his shoulder as a tank explodes Frederick yells orders to his men as Baldwin screams at the conscripts to remain in line. The sight that meets Fredericks' eyes is the most terrifying thing he has ever seen, a giant Eldar, with horns springs forth from the wreckage, bits of tank swirling around him as he launches himself forward. It is also the last thing Frederick sees as the monster cleaves him in two. Baldwin is not far behind, the mighty sword of the Yncarne carving him, another Devil Dog and several infantrymen into tiny pieces, grinning all the time.

Movement
Spoiler:
Yrvaine disembarks from the Tantalus and moves forward into the ruins, where the scourges drop down to join her. The Swooping Hawks drop just in range of one of the Conscript squads, whilst the Tantalus, Venoms and Urien advance on the flank.

Psychic Phase
Spoiler:
Yrvaine casts Ancestors Grace followed by Word of the Phoenix on a squad of Scourges next to her, they fire their Dark Lances at the centre Devil Dog and do 6 Damage. A command point changes that to 10! the Devil Dog is now pretty badly wounded and not looking so hot.

Shooting Phase
Spoiler:
The Tantalus fires one gun at the Devil Dog, stripping his remaining wounds and destroying him. The other gun strips 4 wounds from Pask's Leman Russ. The Yncane appears within 7" of Pask in the space previously occupied by the Devildog. The first unit of Scourges fires at Pask, only managing 2 damage. The other unit fires and gets 4 hits! Unfortunately, they only wound once (for 6 wounds). A command point rerolls changes this, causing another d6 wounds and killing Pask. The solarites kill 6 conscripts.

This allows the Yncarne to Soul Burst and he chooses to Fight, piling in 3" and ending up in combat with the Company Commander, a Devildog and the Infantry squad in the ruin. He manages 4 hits (3 on the Tank and 1 on the Commander) he cuts the Company Commander down, doing 5 wounds and butchers the Devil Dog doing 11. He then consolidates, engaging the Commissar, whilst remaining engaged with the Infantry squad.

The rapid firing Venoms kill 6 of the ratlings hiding in the nearby ruin. The Grotesques Liquefy the conscripts, killing 16. The Swooping Hawks fire at the other squad of conscripts, managing to kill 1 with the Sun Rifle and 3 with the Las Blasters.

Assault Phase
Spoiler:
The Tantalus charges the Ratlings. Its attacks kill all but one.

The Yncarne attacks, putting 3 attacks on Lord Commissar and 3 on the squad. he kills three guardsmen and massively overkills the commissar. The Squad pile in and do no wounds.

Morale Phase
Spoiler:
The badly damaged conscript squad loses another 21 men to morale. The other conscript squad loses only 4. The last Ratling also runs away, but the Infantry Squad in combat with the Yncarne stand firm!

Guard Turn 1
Spoiler:
What a crapshow thinks Tempestor Prime Omasar to himself, watching his men prepare to drop into the battle. The command structure on the ground has crumbled, with a squad sergeant left as the highest-ranking officer. He shakes his head and opens the vox to the Serjeant "Get those useless conscripts to bring down that demon, man!" He orders then jumps out of the transport carrying him, leading his men in a plummeting drop towards the ground. From this high vantage, he sees his orders being followed as the conscripts bunch up and bring their las weapons to bear in a startling light show, most, but not all harmlessly deflected by the monster's demonic presence. As his boots touch down next to a Devil Dog rolling up to shoot the enemy mega-skimmer he calls to his men, landing near him "MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!" the flamer squad and the Melta squad dash forwards, getting closer to the targets.

Serjeant Jefferies doesn't like this. He hasn't been in command before and never thought he would be. After relaying the Tempestor's command to the Conscripts he contacts the Tank commanders near him and gives them the same message "Kill the Demon Elf!". The roar of shells and the chatter of bolter fire fill the air as the war machines of the Imperium of Man rain fire upon the god made flesh. The Serjeant raises his own weapon and adds to the barrage along with his men, watching as the monster is buffeted and shaken by each heavy blast. Las fire from the conscripts is joined by a hail of bullets from the Ratlings and as the smoke clears the monster can be seen dropping to one knee and falling.

Omasar watches as his Scions add their meltas to the power of the Devil Dog, the focussed beams cutting through the giant barges protection and breaking chunks from its hull. Smiling he looks to the left to see the ruin engulfed in flame, though only a single Dark Eldar screams and dies. As he watches the plasma shots of his brave Command squad pour out, slamming into the enemy leader where she hides.

Yrvaine spins around as she hears boots hit the ground behind her and raises her hand to stop a barrage of las fire with a psychic shield, when she is instead greeted by blasts of white hot plasma she stumbles and her defences beging to crack. She can feel the heat on her face and the sweat on her brow. This is not good.

Movement
Spoiler:
The Devildog moves up to shoot the Tantalus, whilst the Infantrymen in combat with the Yncarne fall back. The Scions drop in, landing in position to attack the Tantalus with Melta,
the Scourges with Flamer and Yrvaine with Plasma. Both the Melta and Flamer are ordered to MOVE MOVE MOVE! so they can get in range.

Shooting
Spoiler:
The Conscripts double tap the Yncarne firing 100 shots. They manage to do a single wound. The Manticore also fires at the Yncarne, but can't wound the monstrous self. A heavy barrage of shots from the Leman Russ deal a further 6 wounds to it. The Infantry near the tanks do 1, with a lucky lasgun shot. The Ratligs finish him with a barrage of Splinter Fire.

The Devil Dog targets the Tantalus, forcing a melta shot through its heavy shielding and doing 4 damage. The Melta Gun scions fail to add anything, not able to wound.

The plasma Scions do much better taking 4 wounds off Yrvaine and the flamers manage to kill a single Scourge Solarite.

No Casualties

How did the Yncarne kill the character. The Yncarne can't charge after being placed and can't be placed within an inch of an enemy unit.

He chose Fight off of soul burst. Pile in 3" and then he was within one inch. I know some people don't think it works that way, but both my opponent and I agreed on the interpretation, as he thought it 100% clearly works that way and I'm like 70% that it does. I don't want this to be a rules debate thread.

You can't use the fight. You have to be within an inch or have charged to fight. Its the first thing under fight

A unit has to be eligible to Fight! to be selected to fight in the fight phase.

So sure, using your SfD that way is legal - but it wouldn't let you do anything, since the unit is not legally eligible to be selected to Fight in the Fight phase unless it charged or was within 1" of an enemy unit.

You can't 'Pile in' unless a unit is legally eligible to be selected for the Fight phase' in this case, since they weren't within 1" to start with and/or hadn't charged, not a legal ruling.

Edit: Nvm, read The Yncarne's rules. You can't charge with him on the turn he arrives using Inevitable Death. So still illegal.

Just saying - fun batrep either way.

I respect you have a different opinion. I think you are mistaken. I won't discuss it here.

I know some people don't think it works the way we do, but both my opponent and I agreed on the interpretation, as he thought it 100% clearly works that way and I'm like 70% that it does. I don't want this to be a rules debate thread.

A little bizarre that the Guard player didn't spend 2 CP to save 21 guys... gotta use those Stratagems!

To avoid potential further hijacking, made a YMDC thread concerning SfD and the Fight/Charge phase:
