Basing your opinion mainly off of appearance and fluff, which of these forces would you make an army of and why?

Vostroyas Firstborn are the best and more proper 40k Imperial Guard regiment of all 40k.
The rest are either very movie/fantasy rip-off (Catachans with Rambo, Cadians with Starship Troopers), or too much Historical reality rip off (Krieg, Steel Legion, Mordians, Tallarn,, etc...) (This doesn't mean I don't like those other regiments too. Krieg, Stell Legion and Tallarn are beautifull)
But Vostroyan Firstborns? They are the PERFECT mix between a historical army fusioned with proper 40k grimdark aesthetics.

Hi
I vote Death Korps of Krieg. Only have couple unit's, but buying slowly some more, love ww1 inspired figures.
Now just give us our zeppelin scaled to 40k.

I like Steel Legion the best for their relative simplicity, but I don't like how their helmets are so clearly channeling a ww1 german helmet. And I really dislike Krieg for the same reason. There's just too much baggage there.
My favorite IG models are the kasrkin. Scions are a close second, but I dislike their faux-medieval armor look and their overly large weapons.

I'm building Death Korps now... love them. Great models and character, and the historical reference is a bonus for me... Though I also like Steel Legion, and if Catachans had better models I'd be all over them, I even love the old Kasrkin - BUT this guy makes a lot of sense... Vostroyan's are the perfect mix. If only they had plastic models.

I uh. What? No I don't know what you're saying.
I have nothing against miniature gaming actual ww1 or 2 german troops, I used to run Wehrmacht in flames of war. Never played any ww1 games.
Its not like I wouldn't play against them (they're still cool models), I just think that there's a lot of baggage in that look for me.

I think he meant to say the Germans from WW1 aren't the Germans from WW2...
The Germans from WW1 were brutally efficient killers fighting a war on all sides... the Germans from WW2 were the Nazi's (nough said).
The Kreig aesthetic style is somewhat based on the Germans from WW1; their background and history is pure Grimdark.

Steel Legion. Love the trench coat/gas mask aesthetic. Very easy for new players to paint. They are embroiled in one of the largest conflicts in the universe, often cut off from reinforcements or outside aid yet hold the line. I like Steel Legion because they are normal men/women with lives, families, jobs etc & they have everything to lose. Beset on all sides by the largest waagh the IoM has ever encountered & now chaos as well. Whereas DKoK are vat grown humans with no names, assigned numbers & whos sole purpose is to martyr themselves for the imperium. I like the vostroyan's aesthetic, but its hard to overlook their failure to aid the imperium during the Horus Heresy.

Haha sheesh man, I didn't think a full historical account of the German armies was relevant to the discussion here (it's not) - so yes, overly simplified conclusion was the goal. Nor is your odd dig on US politics; the majority of Americans voted for the Democrat - but we have Faux News, gerrymandered districts, huge corporate and foreign money interests influencing political action, and lots of uneducated morons... so yeah - we ended up with the full Republican suite to the detriment of everyone (not relevant to this discussion).
The DKoK naming conventions are pretty bad, but not on the level of Space Wolves or even Blood Angels... and the historical cliches really only go as far as the helmets/mask and perhaps the hussars; regardless I think they look awesome. The DKoK background is pure Grimdark though and the novels are pretty good.
I'm really hoping they release newer/better Catachan models, despite the 80's action movie cliches, I've always loved the jungle theme.

It's hard, they are my favourite 3 My vote goes for DKK. I Would buy SL plastics especially if they design carapace variants. On note: both DKK and SL are not exclusively german, they have elements of French and Brits respectively. They reference a FRONT, not a FACTION of WW1 and WW2.

Exactly, they're a rough amalgamation of trenchcoat/gasmask WW1/2 European front aesthetics. There's nothing distinctively German or WW1 specific about them, as far as I can tell.

The Death Korps are aesthetically a mish-mash of WW1 forces, with clear inspiration from both the french and german uniforms. They are there to represent the typical trench warfare armies with long coats and gas masks, whereas the Cadian would be modern troops, Catachan vietnam/Rambo and Valhallans a typical WW2 soviet army. The name Krieg is of course the german word for war, but they could just as well have used the french Guerre, but I've come to understand that the german version is a bit more widespread in at least popular culture which is why they might have chosen it.

The French in WW1 were still brightly colored and plumed etc... still donning the Napoleon aesthetic for the most part, makes me think more of Mordians - but the way the trench coat was pinned back around the knees does look very DKoK.
As others have said, DKoK are primarily the trench warfare army in 40k... while that isn't distinctly German (or French), the skull masks on the hussars are certainly based on the WW1 German army, and the armour and officer crests are based on French officers... but the overall look is still pretty generic.

Rather self-centered that.
Most of the whining I hear is within your country, we are all just grabbing our popcorn.
Be happy anyone takes an interest at all.
I believe a few people were talking about various esthetics of German looking gear in 40k armies that do not involve the late coming to war American look.
Trenchcoats were to add a fair bit of protection since gas among other things were a problem.
They list Armageddon as being a rather hostile environment that requires a mechanized army as mobile protection.
The Death Korps are basically from an irradiated world so the protective gear has to be even more involved.

You know, I actually like my Cadian-style guardsmen the best.
They do look like what rank and file soldiers of a *galactic empire* would look like: they have standardized & functional uniform, armor and weapons.
Of course, my dudes are not from Cadia. They just use the standard imperial gear.
... Not to mention, they don't cost arm and leg. Just an arm *or* a leg.
