Subject: Low model count tournament legal army, advice?
|

So question is I’d like to make an army maybe 5-10 models obviously monstrous creatures or vehicles. If I could I’d like to convert some daemon princes or hive tyrants using Balrog wing to look dragony but open to vehicles tanks battleshits as well. What’s the most tournament viable way to do this?

Most probably Magnus, Mortarion and 2 knights, you could really do some cool conversions on the knights (One favoured for each good)
|
A Song of Ice and Fire - House Greyjoy.
AoS - Maggotkin of Nurgle, Ossiarch Bonereapers & Seraphon.
Bloodbowl - Lizardmen.
Horus Heresy - World Eaters.
Marvel Crisis Protocol - Avengers, Brotherhood of Mutants & Cabal.
Middle Earth Strategy Battle game - Rivendell & The Easterlings.
The Ninth Age - Beast Herds & Highborn Elves.
Warhammer 40k - Tyranids.

With 3 cupreme commander detchaments you can have up to 15 HQ's as your army. I dont know about daemons, but hive tyrants are HQ. Don't know what points you are playing at but I would think a hive tyrant is around 200 points (I am guessing) so you can have around 5 and 10 at 1000 and 2000 points respectivly.
You can also looking into some form of super heavy. Those armies have 2 to 4 models or something.

I think you meant conversion.
As for if it's tournament legal, you'd have to ask the tournament organizer.
I can't quite make out what I am looking at in this picture. What is it in actuality and what does this conversion represent?

It’s all gw parts from fantasy/lotr kroq gar on carnosaur the old one with Balrog wings. I’d probably leave off the rider and use the new carnosaur
I’d probably run it as a daemon prince. Maybe hive tyrant

Probably. It's all GW parts, so that helps.
However, it's up to that specific tournament's TO to decide.

If I remember how huge the Carnosaur was, that could even represent Mortarion if you wanted to, especially if perched on a rock.
However (not trying to be mean here) I should mention that GW stores sometimes won't allow conversions that mix non-LotR and LotR parts, due to a contractual agreement with Warner Bros. Of course, that was almost a decade ago, so I don't know if the agreement is still there, but just want to give you fair warning in case it still is.

According to the internet, Shadowswords are apparently OP right now.
But for real superheavy advice, I would contact Unit1126PLL. He is one hell of a superheavy commander and can give you a better rundown of the big beasties better than most people could.

Oh hi there! I have been playing Superheavies for ever.
As for a superheavy company, that depends a lot on your current meta and what you'd like, since the vehicles tend to be specialized.
If you're looking at 2000 points, you could field 3 Superheavies plus support.
If you're looking for a good TAC list and willing to field a mixed company, one Shadowsword, one Baneblade/Banehammer, and one Stormsword would be a good mix.
The Stormsword really helps nuke models with high saves in cover (like Terminators in cover), relieving the Shadowsword to focus on other targets. The Stormsword's main gun is also very good at knocking out "lesser" tanks so the Shadowsword doesn't have to waste its time with Rhinos.
The Shadowsword itself is fairly obvious. Point it at the Target That Must Die and nuke it, plain and simple.
The third variant is your gun platform - your all purpose, all-killing machine that isn't so focused on armour or high-save models (though it can deal with them if necessary!) but is rather focused on protecting the other two from lesser threats with myriad smaller guns (typically in my case, a Baneblade).
As for regiment doctrine, the Catachan one is almost mandatory. You don't want to stand still, so Cadian is out. Valhallan is out because the enemy focus fires tanks to death (in most circumstances), meaning at most it will help one vehicle (unless you're against a panicking or clueless opponent). Mordian is okay, with the overwatch help, especially since the superheavies can overwatch even when enemy units are within 1", but I have found that they are intimidating enough not to worry too much about charges on their own. Tallarn is okay, though advancing with a superheavy is mostly pointless and that's all it gives them. Steel Legion is bad for obvious reasons, and Vostroyan is only helpful in situations where the superheavy's movement is restricted - generally, their weapons are long-enough ranged that they just need a solid move towards their target to peg it. A Baneblade's threat range with it's demolisher is 34".

So the superheavies can fire overwatch if there are enemies closer than 1”? Can they normally fire into Melee or is that an overwatch thing?

I think a Hive Tyrant backed up by his Carifex bodyguards would be the coolest low model court army.
And I hear that Carnifex are great in the new Tyranid codex so it should serve you well in tournaments as well!

So the Baneblades have a rule called Steel Behemoth. It lets them always fire their weapons, even while enemies are within 1".
However, it does not override the targeting restrictions save for the secondary weapons (i.e. heavy bolters/flamers) which can fire at enemy units within 1" of the Baneblade only.
So it cannot fire into other combats, but can still fire away at other targets that are not engaged while the enemy pound on it.
You'll need 3 machines to make the army work, as the detachment calls for 3 Lords of War.

You could, but you'd be missing out on Regimental Doctrines which truly makes the superheavy tanks terrifying.
I wouldn't worry about Close Combat with the Baneblades. If you're really worried, make them Mordian, keep them close, and use the Defensive Gunners stratagem. A Baneblade overwatching with a 4+ to hit will crush anything significant. But even the 5+ to hit for a different regiment's Baneblades is still terrifying.

Not very, I suspect. There's nothing to protect the Basilisks from Close Combat as the superheavies simply do not take up enough space on the board.
I suspect, if you wanted to make a "dirty" Guard Army around superheavies, drop the superheavies entirely and bring regular guard instead!
Superheavies are certainly fantastic but they're like, 99% good and not 100% ridiculously OP, which means they're garbage tier for all the "good players" on this forum.

I’ve done the math on guardsmen they are utterly ridiculous efficiency. Catachan with shotguns are great. If you really wanted to just pwn everyone forget the vehicles and do like 200 guardsmen with a couple dozen special weapons in the mix. A sws with meltas is 60 points triple lascannon hws is like 78. Spam spam spam
We’re talking 22 points per wound on land raiders with a sws... most armies struggle to get that against GEQ. It’s ridiculous. Sure they did easy but the. Again spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam

Right, that's the issue. Superheavies are great and I've had fun, close, and devastating games with them (especially against other superheavies).
They're also certainly capable of duking it out in a tournament and winning. But their odds are lower than just spamming other Guard things.

The flip side is who wants to spend more time packing and unpacking than playing?
Then again 600 points will net you 12 sws and 2 hq that averages 2-3 leman russes down to 0 a turn

Yeah, that's true.
I confess the issue I am running into now, also, with my Foot Sisters horde, is repainting is a chore. For tanks, I feel like you can give them character and individuality - with 3 models in your army, you can give them personality like a D&D party.
With a billion tiny infantry it's just not feasible.

Could we get more pictures of that model? And perhaps more details of its construction?
I've had a longstanding plan to do something similar (Carnesaur base, HE and maybe CWE bits).
It was going to be an Exodite WK back in 6th. Now, it'll either be WHFB HE Lord on Star Dragon (meaning never leave the shelf, but still be awesome), or I might look at using Nids for Exodites. Because I'm not sure mine'll be big enough to be a 400-pt monster (the WK). @op what do you think?

when I get home I’ll post the few other pictures I have of it. Unfortunately it met with an unfortunate fate long ago

Take a few knights, and a legion falchion tank destroyer. Worked for me. I take two knight Acheron, a falchion, and a supreme command with the leftover points to kill anything else. I've smashed faces at my local tourneys.

GW used to sell the Balrog wings separately. All I really did was green stuff them to the model where the arms went. I imagine using the new carnosaur model will be easier. This was done with the old metal model.
