So my regular wargaming opponent wants to play Tanks. We both love the scale and the simplicity of the rules. The fact that you can get a full game in, in not much over 30 mins is amazing. I've already got a full 100 point US Sherman platoon and planning to get an Italian platoon as soon as possible. He's doing Germans and Russians.

The point of this thread is to ask if the game has a following here, as I've not seen any threads about it.

It would also be the type of game I could imagine playing at a tournament or other gaming event.

Anyone here playing it and if so, how popular is it in your area?

Thanks

I don't play it myself. And I suspect that it's too simplistic for most historical gamers. But even though I've never seen a game played at my FLGS, it does seem to sell product there.

The only thread about it here that I can recall is one complaining that the game doesn't have the King Tiger.

I was intrigued when it launched, and then lost interest after watching some video battle reports - that and I don't care for Battlefront most of the time. I would also agree with the poster above, if I was going to do a tank sim game I'd want far more detail than what I see in Tanks.

If you like Tanks, you might also want to Peak at What a Tanker! from Two-Fat Lardies.

Edit: i never had much of a hankering for a pure tank game.... but what I have seen looks inoffensive enough.

Not having the Königstiger is incredibly outrageous indeed!

I have just ordered a British Comet and 3 Cromwell tanks to make a 100 pt army.

I'm planning to get 3 Pershing's to go with the 5 Sherman's I already have and going to get 4 Churchill's to go with my Comet and Cromwell's. That will give me 2 200 pt forces.

I love this little game.

A full army for under £30 is pretty great. My British only cost £24.

I think one of the main selling points of the game is as a gateway into more complicated games like Flames of War or even Bolt Action.

Watched a battle report about What a Tanker! Looks much more fun than the Tanks games I played, and an equally minimal commitment.
i second your recommendation.

What a Tanker! is fun, but be warned that you'll need to play with people who are okay with getting their turn stagnated by a bad roll of the dice. I ran a game and had several players frustrated when they weren't rolling the right numbers to fire or reload their guns, or couldn't move.

And I think there were rules for infantry in an edition of Wargames, Soldiers & Strategy.

GF9:Tanks was never about realism or even anywhere near what an actual small tank engagment could be, it is the skirmish version of the FoW games, made even simpler for fast and easy games.
it is not your typical 1 whole evening game, it is best seen as a warmup for a normal game or a quick break game.

yes it is bloody annoying that there is no rules for king tiger and jagdtiger when the russian has rules for is-2 and amerikans has rules for the m26(plus the super pershing), but there is some fan made rules out there for the KT and JT.

I always thought it would be kind of fun to make a 40K version of TANKS! for the various GW/FW kits bobbing about.

I have it it's a fun little beer and pretzels type time killer game. I honestly prefer simpler most of the time anyway rather than something trying to be a "simulator".
Especially a simulator for what is probably one of the muddiest periods full of bad information, misinformation, and just bad story telling in general.

Which is probably why I play a little GF9 Tanks, and I really like Flames of War it's probably my #1 tabletop game. But any game that tries to be more "historical" or have deeper rules I just bin.

We play it at our club. Both using the original models and 1/56th scale tanks. Typically on a 6x4 board in either case.

It fits well into the kind of system which I like to play. Simplicity is key, though with the ability to add complexity with additional unit rules. I dislike games where you have to be checking the rules often or get into arguments over dissecting reems of text.

The game isn't perfect. Whilst there is a broad range of vehicles covered, they aren't all inclusive. It would be nice if there was a vehicle design system available, however I suspect that would take away from sales (why else buy the cards). So far we've made do with using existing stats to represent other vehicles. As do the rules oddly miss out pieces of terrain like ruins - which otherwise have to be counted as forrests (other systems have things like tanks falling into basements for instance).

With the reliance on the cards, it would be nice if they updated some of them to account for the expanded range of models now available. You can't for instance give an IS-1 a certain type of AT ammo which is otherwise available to T-34s using the same gun. And as for discrepencies, that Lend Lease vehicles lose special abilities can seem a little odd - like they did it for one release, and carried through for all other Lend Lease tanks, even when it doesn't make sense removing rules inherent to the design of a vehicle.

Gripes aside, its a fair system. Before we've used things like Ogre and home brews for this sort of game. For those wanting to play tank based games its a decent system. I'd like to see more types of unit available using the same stats and rules, but others would probably suggest just playing a platoon level wargame. Which is to say that our WWII games using the Star Wars Legion rules have also worked fairly well - they don't however really scale to have quite so many large vehicles being played in a streamlined manner as with Tanks.

Another factor to consider is that the game seems largely to have been abandoned by GF9 and Battlefront. There haven’t been any new releases in some time.

Dead games are my favorite games! Then I can do whatever I want with it. Might look closer at it now.

cuz they have nothing more too release. they only sell plastics and i doubt they will bother to do KT and jagdtiger in plastic just for this game.

all their fokus is now on the team yankee version of this game.

Picked this up a couple years ago but never bothered playing it. The lad has shown an interest in my flames of war lately so we are going to get tanks up and running for him.

He even wants his own small collection of terrain. Plus he’s thinking of colour schemes for the Sherman’s. Bearing in mind that he’s only seven and likes the idea of blue tanks, this will be some odd looking games... but great fun still.

Digging out the clump foliage and lolly sticks later tonight to get him started with some simple hedges.

exactly, and soon to be replaced with a similar release with laughably "pre-painted" armor.

This could be a base for a fun "Alt-Earth/Hist" where WWII tanks are picked up and used by various mercenary bands as they battle over a post-WWIII wasteland.

Hmmmm, could even be fun with designs through the 50s.

Hmmm... Some kind of world, with teams of tanks from different eras blitzing across the landscape. A World of Tanks Blitz, if you will

That's pretty much the excuse plot for Armored Warfare (which includes PvE fights as well as PvP), except with post-WW2 vehicles.

Well, they have made the team yankee version including helicopters, and that stuff is from the 70s and 80s....

Basicly you can use the game rules system(plus statcard system) for any tanks from any era aslong as you can make firepower, armor and mobility stats balanced.
then just add special rules reflecting the era as needed.

You can allso use 28mm tans from say bolt action if you convert the distances to the new scale and use a 6x4 table.

It’s pretty official that Tanks! as it existed is dead. GF9 plan on releasing a World of Tanks branded game that draws heavily on it, but probably with enough changes to invalidate your old stuff - taking a cue from GW, it seems.

Nah, the rules have been altered and/or cleaned up and the dice are now bespoke instead of standard d6 but the models are still the same. I'm fairly sure getting copies of the new unit card stats online isn't going to be much of a issue.

Dammit. I had managed to avoid this game for so long...

But this new version looks like a really fun, light skirmish game. Sigh... It's inevitable that I'll get a copy now!

I play...

Sigh.

Who am I kidding? I only paint these days...

How much difference are you really seeing? Did you catch a rules update the rest of us did not?

Haha, no. This is just a firm confirmation of how shallow I am. I simply saw the repackaging and thought "gee whiz, this looks neat"

Where before I was like "huh. maybe later"

It does look like a fun, simple game, and if the reviews show that this "second edition" (or whatever it is, supposedly they've tinkered with points values to balance it?) is still good, or even better, i'd check it out!

I play...

Sigh.

I just looked through the rules. Very few changes, but a couple that may slightly improve the experience. Seems a missed opportunity to really improve the system, but they may want to keep it very basic as a gateway product. And they have definitley tinkered with points. In addition, all future releases should be pre-assembled and primered a base color which is good for people short on time, hobby equipment or simply really young.

Hopefully you can try a demo from someone in your area before investing, but if not good old YouTube should have a number of reviews a week or so after
release.

I don't recommend the original game, but I also don't "not recommend" it. It's highly subjective this one. Totally depends what experience a player is looking for, and the age of the players involved.
To quote two friends the day after a local demo:
" I love that stupid game!"
The other:
"I hate that stupid game"

Enjoy and I hope dice find your way to the table somehow.

It sounds like it's a bit closer to the X wing experience than say, a deep simulation of tank battles.

That's about what I can handle these days, so I'm guessing it will slot nicely into what limited brain power I have these days.

But yes, I'm going to wait and watch some reviews first.

I'll have Mantic's Armada to tide me over until then.

I play...

Sigh.
