I'm going to build some modular spaceship interior tiles, each with a floor and two walls, with various doorways so characters can move between rooms. They'll be multistory too, for some vertical gaming action!

I'm going to start off with a few pieces of terrain that I can plop into the rooms, so I have an idea of how wide and how tall to make the tiles. First up, a void shield generator. I built the first floor of the thing so far:

This is gonna be massive and awesome !

I finished building the Voidshield Generator and some, uh, Thermic Plasma Regulators. The big generator can sit in the middle of a tile, and the regulators can serve as very fancy modular ladder pieces to connect to otherwise un-served platforms.

Quick and dirty foam core mockup of the basic layout of a tile. I may end up making a few of these mockups in different sizes to see what I prefer.

Couple questions.

Why not squares so that every edge can fit with another edge?

Why not remove the walls or have stand alone walls? This would free up access (reaching over a wall to get to a model) and allows for more variety in terrain layout.

My suggestions exactly. Terrain tiles with large fixed pieces on them really limit use. As cool as a spaceship interior would be, having to play on the same 4-6 terrain sections every time will get stale fast.

Better I think to make a set of interesting floor tile sections, a set of 2-sided wall sections (with gangways, ladders, greebliling and second story doors), a batch of unbased large terrain items (like you're already doing) and then a set of bridges/walkways to go between sections, terrain, walls, etc. Then you have a flexible system of items that can be rearranged at will. They will take up much less space when stored and be far more useful over time than large, fixed terrain system.

Lastly, You can even make a set of raised sections to vary the heights of your rooms setups. Freestanding ladders are a good thing to have as well...

I recommend 1 foot as your standard size for wall and floor sections. For raised sections, 4 inches tall and 6-8 inches square is a useful standard, but that's of course up to you.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’ll keep thinking over different ways of putting the floors and walls together. I want to strike the right balance between modularity, ease of setup, durability, and theming.

I played around with various Zone Mortalis and Boarding Action terrain to see how they fit with each other.

You're welcome.

As for walls, there's nothign saying you can't have some chunks of machinery attached to them to keep them from falling over. Pegs-and-holes, or magnets are also a possiblity.

Good luck with the project.

That’s a great point. There’s a lot of chunks of machinery that are designed to attach to the walls that come with the various boarding action kits which would serve that purpose admirably.

Good idea. One thing I've been meaning to try also -but haven't yet- that might be useful to you, is ladders attached to bits of cargo so that they will stand upright on their own and flat against whatever wall they are placed. You can't have too many ladders...

I built a bunch of wall sections from various Kill Team sets from years past. The plan is to stack 'em up three high.

I trimmed off any protrusions that stuck up and then glued plasticard strips between the sections, allowing me to extend the walls up three stories.

Thanks folks!

The gray parts were looking a lot like... unpainted plastic. So I drybrushed them with Karak Stone. Hopefully this will make them look like they're lit by a warm light source from above, like the walls do.

Good idea! Here's where I'm at so far. The connection points will need a bit more sanding before they'll work properly, so they're not completely stuck together, but you can get the idea of what I'm going for.

There are four 30cm x 30cm floor tiles, so the whole thing you see in the pictures is 60cm x 60cm.

I got some very thin (1/4") painter's tape. Much taping ensued.

I used a stippling technique with a drybrush, with results that pleased me.
