Had a good time, the Fighting 49th Cadian did well for a time in this mega event, then disaster struck.  We had 19 players and 19000 points on the table good vs evil type of thing.

Think the fact that my force was spread out so much lead to my demise.  Did get to kill a chos lord however.

Anyway to all the guys that played good games and I hope you had as much fun as I did.

It certainly was lots of fun. To bad the good side got owned...
The diversion worked perfectly, despite the actual fight for the real landing pad going bad. The bad side told me that when they saw my army and the eldar army on the far left flank that they had to stop us, so they sent around 4000 points of there overall forces to combat our 2000. We still lost less then 1000 to their 1300, so we did hold and win the left flank. The right held out ok... we did contest the objective. The middle completely collapsed. Oh well, we took a beating but considering how bad it looked it was suprising we were only about 1000 out from a draw.

Yeah it was a blast. The only thing I was disappointed by was that for 5 turns I held my objective, but with the numbers eroding on my table I didn't have the back up, so in the end I still was in the building, but I had no long ranged weapons to stop a 5 man squad of chaos marines from entering the far side of the building by the end of the game. I did punk out that dread though with a sweet last minute Meltagun shot...hehe. All in all, my SOB did okay. Can't wait until the next one in August.

Glad to hear everyone had a good time. The next will be even bigger and better....Oh, and the battle was 21 players for 21,000 points.

I loved the event as well.

I guess my gamble of taking a 500+ point Terminator Command Squad work as I was able to contest the objective with it.

It was hard though, playing against all that close combat Chaos evil with shooting squads in a city, ouch.

But revenge is to be had that is for sure.

Hey Warrior 50, How big of a table did you guys play on? Did you use reserve rules or any special rules for the battle?

Three connected 8x4 tables. It was all city fight and each side got 3 strategems. Every turn each side got a random event, such as a fighter straffeing run, espionage preventing the enemies event, teleportation, reinforcements, ect...

@Darrian: Yeah pretty much what Me_Person said. the other special rules that were included was results of Medusa V contests of HQ character build and Build aCoD key building contest. By participating in those contests, it allowed those participants to field their HQ choices with certain bonus rules based on their conversions/ etc. Same with the buildings. Anyone that built a key building was allowed to place it on the table to be used in addition to the 3 strategems that each team started with. I think on the good side we had 3 extra strategems that were key buildings. We still lost however. The head leader of their team is an excellent player and drove his team on to victory. It was a great time and congrats to the bad guy team for sticking it to the loyalist forces!

I will also note that 70% of the city fight table scenery was built by me on behalf of the store and I am glad that I don't have to paint anymore GW buildings!  In the end it all looked great.

You did a great job on the terrain I might add. Also, thanks to others who brought in even more for the battle..

I'm still working on wether or not I'll change the FOC / points. I'm sort of scared to raise it higher as I think it will promote more pieces that didn't get their full actions. What do you think?

If the force org stayed the same it would be fine. The only thing that I didn't like was the lack of wysiwyg, as some time was wasted trying to figure out what was what, such as dark eldar archons mounted on helion sky boards jumping out of raiders, and a space marine captain model leading a marine squad, the whole time we thought it was his HQ but it was just a sarg, his real HQ was hiding with a jump pack. But, for the intent of getting plenty of players, it was fine.

Wysiwyg will be addressed for the next event. I was not aware of the problems you encountered but I'll endeavour to make sure you don't face them again.

Any chance of showing off some pics of that massive cityfight scenery?

Oh and on a different note... is the Enterprise 1701 comic shop still open? I used to go there almost every day when I was going to Navy Nuclear Power School back in '93-'94.

Yes, it is still open but in a different location. (436 / colonial at the home depot plaza). 4,000 s.f. of gaming space.

I'm not sure if there were pictures taken. My fiancee had my camera that day. We will however do pictures for the next one.

And we prefer the term "scumbag" over "dirtbag" (lol)

Yeah I agree with Me_Person. WYSIWYG should be mandatory. I also heard of several instances of not knowing what was what at our table but I was too busy with keeping track of the action on my end to not really notice specifics.
@Ki: I will bring my camera for the next one so that everyone can see the action.

Next time the good guys need some indirect fire.

Coordination in general is what the good guys need.

Perhaps a little foreplanning esepcially in regards to city fight type environments..

Keep in mind that the objectives completed (and the ones that were not) will have direct bearing on the next event.

What impact will me (us in general) killing all the enemy skimmers do? The same with the deaths of both field marshalls.

Air supremecy.

Since you both lost your field marshalls your command structure will both suffer equally so it pretty much cancels out.

Kewl. When is the second one again? I'll have to converse with my teammates as to what unit choices we should be considering for this next one. I think in certain instances the good guys suffered because some unit selections weren't the optimal choice for the enviroment. We'll see.

I don't think it crossed any of our minds at the time. This is from memory:

There where 21 players 11 Bad, 10 Good, each with 1000 points.

Me_person (Tau), CaptK (SoB), Warrior 50 (IG), and myself (Space Marines, custom chapter) teemed up with an Eldar player, additional IG player, Space Marine (Crimsom Fists), Space Marine (Custom Chapter), Space marine (Ravenwing), and I forgot the last one.

Against...

Tyranids (2 players), IG, LatD, Dark Eldar, and the rest Chaos of various forms.

There where 3 - 8 x 4 tables lined up to become a super table. The rules where simple, the bad guys had to force the good guys off the landing zone, the flip side though was that there where 4 possible "landing zones", with the good guys knowing which one was which, leaving the bad guys to guess which ones to take.

The good guys placed Me_person and the Eldar player on the far side, in a bait to distract the Baddies into thinking that was the LZ and for the most part they played well and throughly keep that side well contested.

The middle table was where the good guys failed as lack of communication and solid playing on the bad side lost the day for the good guys on that table.

Where it got heated was on the far side where the LZ really was. CaptK's Sisters, the Crinsom Fists (our leader), and the Custom Chapter (and I think one other) tried to hold off 5000 points of Tyranids, LatD (with a Blood Thirster), Chaos, and IG. The Fists and the majority of the other players where nearly wiped out in a MASSIVE close combat in the center (in the end the bad guys simply had more numbers there). CaptK's Sisters was tasked in taking a building and for the most part had it but lost it due to a still scoring unit of Chaos hopping in at the last moment.

The good guys only saving grace was that towards the end of the game, we had a random event that allowed one squad to teleport anywhere. It was decide that my 500+ point Terminator Command Squad (Master with lightning Claws, attached Librarian, and 2 donkey cannons) would be the candidate. When they got over there they chewed through 8 Genestealers, 10 Gaunts, and a Broodlord, and was able to massicre into contesting range.

However, it was not enough and the bad guys won by huge marine in Victory Points. (To note the VP's where in effect even though the Bad guys where up 1000 points on there side, but the good guys had more objectives that where worth more points to balance it out).

Pretty good run down of it. I'm working on deatils of the next event now...in between painting the rest of my RTT list for this weekend. (lol)

Most that I talked to liked the "shell game" of the landing points....watching them get narrowed down by the enemy code breakers was great fun. Garreth rolling a 1' on the 4th turn was pretty amusing. (lol)

The next event will be similar but different enough to still be fresh. I'm also open for suggestions and we will indeed have lots of pictures for the next one. I'll encourage more people to bring in even more city terrain if they can.

Yes Captain K, I would love some advice on what I should have taken as far as my Guard units.

Also if we go with the same kinda of good vs bad on 8/5/06 I have 3 units with indirect fire, 2 are Baslisk and one is a Griffon mortor tank.

Guys as you all know it is more important to this old guy to have some fun while playing 40K, yes I did get owned Saturday.  Between Roberts choas army, the two other choas space marine armies and the one Garret plays, I knew I was in trouble.

Advice would be welcomed.

It isn't entirely your fault.

Things will go differently with a little bit of pre-planning and better support. You also should not have been charged with the mission that you were. (hard against your opponents)

You guys should hear the list I PMed to Mahu. I know Matt Steerman has all the models for this, and is probably using an 1850 version of it in the rtt this weekend. This settles all of our indirect needs.

No worries Warrior 50. I think that the center table was in the biggest trouble regardless of who was on it. That table had 2 strong chaos armies with tooled Lords.

While I maintain that having indirect with a longer range was needed, it still probably wouldn't have helped. I think that the number of Lascannons in your army need to increase. Think of it like this: your line squads should be fielding the bulk of your anti-tank (lascannons, plasmaguns). Your vehicles should be primarily anti-infantry. For instance your hellhounds should be equiped with heavystubbers, and extra armor standard. Smoke launchers are a waste on hellhounds because you want them shooting in every turn if at all possible. The extra armor is good because if your tank gets stunned it reduces it to shaken which will allow it to move away to safety. Moral is huge with a guard army and having your Leader and your Junior officers within 12" of your line squads will allow your men to stay in the fight. Grenade Launchers suck and for 2pts more you get a plasmagun, which has a longer range, Better AP and higher strength. Plasma, plasma, plasma, always plasma in line squads if you are taking a special weapon for it.

My other question is what doctrines are you using? Any of your doctrine abilities should be used to best of your ability. Got sharpshooters? Remember to reroll those one's, Got Iron Discipline? Remember that units with 12" get to regroup even if they're below 50% starting strength. By remembering what your doctrines do and using them at the right time will increase the effectiveness of your army.

All these little things add up to big things in a game, especially over 6 turns. Having fun is always above the metagame of 40K, but as you start to increase your success with your army, you will gain more confidence and it will allow you to increase your enjoyment and fun factor of the game. practice, practice, practice. Also if you have any questions or such, you can always ask for sage advice. Gaining insight from people that have a better handle on the metagame is never a bad thing and should be encouraged. It only helps you grow into a more confident player and with that confidence, your overall enjoyment/ satisfaction from the game will do the same.
