Like the title suggests... I have seen quite a few "deathwinh" armies popping up. Do they consist of soley terminators? Do they have special rules? if so, where could I check them out?

Deathwing is an all termie army list included in Codex: Dark Angels

You can find the rules in Codex: Dark Angels.
The army consists of Terminators, Dreadnoughts and Land Raiders.
The Terminators count as troops and such, so there's no need to take tactical squads or scouts. Indeed, you're not even allowed to in a pure deathwing list.
Deathwing terminators and characters are all Stubborn. Beyond that and their unique organization, they have few additional special rules.

Not a trait in the Codex: SM sense, but I suppose you could call it that. But it's more than that. It's even more than a special rule. It's a special force organization rule.

its a special ability that Dark Angels get. However, there are other great abilities that they get such as intractable and stubborn (auto intractable) and 5 points for stubborn. Also they get very good wargear, they have the only power weapon for space marines that is STR 6. They also have a raven wing army which is just bikes and land speeders with an auto 6+ save. Buy the codex and see if you like em they also apparently will have an update sometime soon next year.

Think of Deathwind as an incredibly small, high points cost army (most 1K armies I've seen have around 20 Termies, a LR and a Dread, or something similar.)
You'll be hideously outnumbered (think like 3 or 4 to 1), but you'll have the gear to get the job done.
Heck, I wish my standard troops had a storm bolter, a power fist, a 2+ save, were intractible and a 5+ Invulnerable!

I think Ill wait for the new codex before I pick it up. Sounds very intriguing. I used to think Grey Knights were small in number. haha

To use deathwing you will need the following: Codex space marines 3rd ed dark angels codex 4th ed darkangels faq (available from the GW site)
You wont be able to use much from the 3rd ed dark angel codex, except for a couple special rules, as most entries will derive from the 4th ed space marine codex. The dark angel FAQ just modifies the sm codex to use it for 4th ed legal rules.
Deathwing includes only the following options: Terminators tech marines dreadnoughts landraiders.

Deathwing includes only the following options: Terminators tech marines dreadnoughts landraiders. well that and your HQs you still get the basic CSM HQs you just have to pay for all thier gear(they have to be in terminator armour) and stubborn. it's a finess army that requires a good general, not something recommended for beginners. at an 1850 tournament sized list your not looking at anything more than 30-34 models. if youu take raiders or dreds in any quantity even less. it is nicer on the bank account thought 8)

Deathwing is not an easy army to play. It is not a powergamers army.
You may have a ton of very scary troops compared to a standard DA army, but you've got up to 150 or so models less than your opponent in tournaments. That's pretty massive. You really need to get every guy to live, and rip apart units with careful precise shooting while avoiding return fire.

So how is this a power gamer army, Bigchris? Is it because of the amount of assault cannons fielded? Please tell me there is some secret that I am missing besides that, as assault cannons (while overpowering in vanilla marine lists) are quite the equalizer for the lack of firepower the DW can inflict. I think whitedragon just kicks your butt too often and youre being whiny.

I love seeing Deathwing across the table. It means that every casualty I cause is worth around 3 of mine (playing Marines) or more (for my other armies). When the buckets of dice come out for saves, the 1s come out to play. It's a nifty army, but by no means powergaming or overwhelming.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

Armies are not powergamey or not powergamey. People are. Some armies are more likely to be turned into power armies because of their choices, but it's ultimately the player, not the army, that is powergamey. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can powergame any army. Some just end up as better products than others. I'm sure plenty of powergamers do play Deathwing. It's just not as powergamey as Iron Warriors or Drop Pods. PS: I've never met WhiteDragon, much less played him.

My mistake. I said that because I recalled you extolling his virtues as a gamer. It sounded as though it was coming from someone who played the other person. Especially after reading this thread: www.dakkadakka.com/Forums/tabid/56/view/topic/forumid/14/postid/56874/Default.aspx

Note: not a powergamers army. Yes, the person is the Powergamer, the army is what he fields to be so.
Deathwing just don't have the level of cheesiness in the army list to be an army like that. Yes, we have assault cannons. LESS then a normal SM army. We also have limited survivability in extended firefights, because we will have to make 2+ save after 2+ save from massed firepower if we aren't careful.
Chris, flaming people here really doesn't get much done.

Hey Hellfury....do we have to take this OT??!?!?!?!? It is correct that chris and I share the same rabid lust for Mauleed's manbabies, but we have never met. On another note, try using the list I described in the thread you linked. Once you get the hang of when and when not to deepstrike, and what enemy targets to blow up first, its usually a done deal. (usually deepstrike all the time) I took a modified list with one lascannon/missile dread to a recent RTT here and won it. The las missile dread I'm beginning to think is better than the Assault cannon pod dreads. But who knows. I have been undefeated with deathwing for some time now. EDIT: Bigchris was hardly flaming anyone. Grow thicker skin, or grow more intelligent. Part of Dakka's charm is that little extra "edge" we have. EDITx2: Actually, I guess we are losing the edge because I hesitated to post what I originally thought, which was, if you want soft and fluffy mindless nazism, go to the Bolter and Chainswords where the mods will even wipe your power armored heiney for you.
