Shaggosaurus Rex </h1>
These are part of a Chaos Mortals army that I’m building. I like to create large centerpiece type figures with extensive conversions, so an army with just a few large units is just the thing. This particular piece is meant to represent.

This army has been dubbed =the Chaos that Time Forgot= around the studio.
The base model is a Fiendish Tyrannosaurus, and there are elements from like four manufacturers in there:
The shoulderplates are GW Ogre gutplates with the edges shaved down.
GW Ogre ironfists for the tail, with some green stuff straps holding it on.
The wrist guards are Bane Thrall shoulderpads by Privateer Press.
The hand blades are Evil Dwarf swords from Rackham.
The chest plate is a shield from Dragonrune Draconids.
I bought three of these models for like $6.00 each on eBay. So, quite a bit less expensive than a GW Shaggoth, but definitely a lot more time-consuming to convert and paint. No net savings in terms of overall investment.
There were numerous problems with making this model work. For starters, the tail is directly over the back, so I cut and adjusted that, puttying the gap. The arms look gimpy with the little Tyrannosaur two-claw hands, so those had to go. Also, the model is too big for a 50mm base, so I custom made a 60mm x 80mm base, just a bit smaller overall than a chariot base.
I used a Dremel carbide cutting blade on low speed to remove the arms, then a 3/32” drill to create holes to receive the sword blades (hand and all—the pommel fits in the hole and the hand is puttied over).
Painting is two layers of glaze. The first uses Vallejo black for a darkening effect, and the second GW brown ink and Vallejo Cavalry Brown (a color I highly recommend) to give it a warm and earthy look. There are some subtle stripes that seem to be so popular in depictions of dinosaurs these days.
Also, in terms of narrative, I couldn’t just have this dinosaur running around, so I provided a Handler (sans one hand).
As of now there is another one of these brutes all converted up and ready to get to the Spray Room for a coat of primer.
Thanks for looking!
