After a fun weekend at the UKGT. We finished with a combined record of 13-4-1. With Greg Sparks going 6-0 for the win. I guess Americans can play at the "european" level.

Congrats, where did the other two place? I was hoping to get a game against one of you but i peaked too early on table 1 and got slapped by mech tau in seek and destroy. Are you all coming to the final? I assume with a record like that you all qualified.

Posted By skkipper on 10/16/2006 1:58 AM After a fun weekend at the UKGT. We finished with a combined record of 13-4-1. With Greg Sparks going 6-0 for the win. I guess Americans can play at the "european" level. I don't think anyone (even the most brash) ever said that Americans couldn't play at the European "level". The contention was that there was a much higher percentage of "sick" lists running around in the UKGT where in US tournaments you may see many sick lists, but you'll also find a bunch of players running around with a "balanced" (sub-optimal) list as well. So, now that you've played in both formats, do you find that stereotype to be true? Do a higher percentage of UKGT players have highly optimized army lists compared to the average USGT? Oh, and congrats on your great tournament (and mad props to Greg). What was your personal record and what army did you take (and what type of army did Greg win with)?

Well if it was a third ed mech eldar, then no it isnt suprising lazarus. it it was a 4th ed codex that they passed out right before the GT, then it has a bit of bearing. The codex hasnt been officially released until the 4th of november in the UK, so I doubt that codex was used.

So... the list was mech eldar. Can we get some specifics?

I didn't want to come off as rude but here goes. The lists are better but it has a feeling that a lot of people look on the forums or talk to their friends and put together a hard list but sadly never get good at playing the list. They just seemed to be bringing the big guns but never really learning how to use them first. scanning over the tables it seemed about 2/3's of the armies could be considered cheesy in the States. The funny thing is that those armies were spread out all over room. I played a demonhunters list in round 6 and 3-1 after the first 4 games and his list would never be considered cheesy. I feel you could bring most armies to the heats and if you were good at your list you could qualify. The mech eldar that won farseer on jetbike wavesserpents with guardians and haywire grenades and falcons the exact mix I don't remember.

I might regret saying this but im going to say it. Heat 1 was not the most hardcore tournament ive ever been to. In fact, for a GW tournament, it was probably the least hardcore tournament. There were only about 5 or 6 IW players, which for the UK, is amazingly low, theres usually about 20-30. It was kind of surreal.
I agree with you on the netlist and not practicsing enough with it. I'd only played 10 games with my eldar before i went to the Heat, which showed in the two games i lost. At least i was the only person there with a fire prism!!

Good show on the win. Come back for the final though It gets... interesting then. That's when all the 20 man seer councils appeared last year. I've had a look over the armies / battle reports that have gone up and the lists appearing at heat 1 don't look particularly hardcore at all. Some strongish lists, but nothing that i'd be concerned about dealing with and only 3 Iron Warriors! Hopefully Heat 3 will be the same...

Ooops, I was under the impression that the new codex was used for this so my earlier post was with that in mind. I think you may have a point on 'not practicing' - there were 95+130+150 entrants to the GT last year and many of those were fluff balanced lists or from first timers. This year there are 150+150+150, so there will be a lot more first timers around playing lists they don't really understand. Last year the difference between the final and heats was huge. The heats had there hardcore compoonents, but were generally composed of quite balanced affairs or nice fluffy lists, like genestealer hordes, mech marines, foot-slogging Tau etc. The final was full of 20-man Seer Councils and Iron Warriors, backed up by Mech Tau, Speeder Marines and Iron Warrior-lite Chaos.

Hey Guys, Here's the list that my buddy Mike and I each took. (1) Farseer on a bike with Guide and Singing Spear. (4) 5 x Guardians with a flamer and HW grenades in WS with TL starcannon and shuriken cannon. (3) Falcons w/ starcannon, holofield and spirit stones. It's the same pattern in principle that we took to Adepticon when we won the team tournament. Alas, this was the last ride of Saim-Heinous under the current build since in the new codex it will no longer be a legal list. It will be retired with a tear in our eyes. I will miss our guardians with HW grenades. It was too much fun chasing vehicles with them and watching opponents laughter at our guardians turn into disdain. The new codex has a lot of great potential with similiar builds and Samm-Heinous is already making plans to ride again. 8^) With regards to the armies present, I have to agree with the net lists and practicing issues that were mentioned. You see similiar things in the states too. In the end, there were a lot of power lists, but they were spread out throughout the rankings. I believe that the UK GT Heat 1 did have more than you would see in a normal tournament / GT in the states. However, I will say that the top teir lists in the US at Adepticon will rival anything that I have seen posted on the net and at the this heat. It would be good to have some European teams come to Adepticon to see what their thoughts are on the subject. In the end, I want to thank all of my opponents for great games and Adam / Keiths x2 / Richard for taking us out to experience the pubs (beer is much better in England than in the states). Mike and I both qualified and are seeing if we can work things out financially and with the families to make the trip back in March for the finals. Hopefully I can have some battle reports done this week and will post them as they are finished. Talk to ya' later, Greg

I think, and maybe we're not giving enough credit to ourselves as gamers here but, the players chose not to go all IW this year on account of the fact there were so many last year. (Or maybe im giving the gamers too much credit). I think its only the hardcore old timers who have played IW for a long while that would have kept playing them for fear of being labelled with a variety of colourful adjectives.
Mechanised lists featured VERY prominantly in the top tables at the GT (both Tau and Eldar). Something interesting to note, Chaos composed of 45% of the top 20. Thats pretty heavy. Aaaand there were definitely not only 3 IW lists.
Overall a very cool tournament. And props to Greg for his performance and humility !

Why wouldn't an american win it. If a tournament is held in Europe the odds of a european winning would be higher. Same goes if held in the states. The real question should be is have any europeans won american GT's. Kudos on the victory.
