Ok, I am working on a 5K army, and I am unsure on what way to go.

I build my armies around either a theme, or a tactic, and this time around I am aiming for tactics.

Note: this topic is not about the list building per se, but obviously may need to include discussion of units necessary to a central tactic.

I will be facing Eldar, Tau, Orks - maybe. The Tau and Ork keep changing thie rarmy plans around a lot (Grey Knights, Necron...).

This is a topic in which to discuss large scale games. The idea here is that many units overlooked, or not abvailable in smaller games, can be discussed for their battlefield worth.

At the moment, I am considering some 200 Infiltrating Infantry, with 45 getting up REAL close with Meltaguns and Autocannons for first turn anti-skimer fire. I have airborne Inquisitional units, with an Eversor assassin infiltrating up the field. Moving up to support the Infantry are 2 Storm Blades, covered by 2 Hellhounds and an Enginseer. At the back are 3 Basilisks and a 'babysitter' platoon.

This, on reflection, may not be the best idea - I start wthiin range, which is a bonus, but it means I have to react to what my enemy does, but the Infiltrate means that I should be able to react on MY terms (an oxymoron, I know, but maybe you know what I mean).

Another option I am considering is a Mechanised army supported by a brace of Super-Heavies. The idea is that I can hit-and-run, although this fdalls down at the fact my speed can be matched by the Eldar/Tau's own speed.

I would like your TACTICAL oppinions on what YOU would do in a 5,000 point game - limited to just 2 detachments to get the upper hand on your foes.

Also, here is a good place to discuss the merrits of the Super-Heavies available to the Imperial Guard.

Do 'real world' (I'm speaking modern here) tactics work for the Guard in such large games, since you can afford a multitude of supporting weapons that are an expensive luxury, if not inhibition, to your force at lower points games

So, any thoughts?

In this 5k game, are you planning on doing the normal 'player 1 does everything with all his units, then player 2 does everything with all his units' type playing style? Cuz Im thinking that would make going first for a shooty army practically garauntee a win. 5k worth of shooty can do a lot of damage, and when the other player takes his turn hell be doing it with much less than 5k.

We don't know yet, we are still trying to work out how to run the games.

However, the tables are likely to be fairly terrain heavy, maining that there are a lot less clear fire lanes that in a 'normal' game, which could be a disadvantage for me.

I had thoughts on using a VERY fast flank force of 2 Conquerors, 2 Salamanders (to chase falcons) and an Infil platoon with Missile Launchers. This is likely backed up by Sniper Special Weapon squads. (I've just read Honour Guard, which gave me the idea). This should be able to move quickly, ad put down a serious load of firepower where it can do some real good.

On the opposite flank is 2 Storm Blades, creating a slow, methodical advance to crush the enemy with - and if I can get the fast stuff behind them, I can have some fun with cross-fires.
