This is going to be brief, since the tournament was like two weeks ago.
I went to Gencon SoCal this year. Played in the WM Steamroller tournament and won the faction coin for Cygnar with a 2-2 record. The tournament had about 14 players, and 5 were Cygnar - a pretty big showing. Oddly also for being located in Anaheim more than half the players at the tourney were from the Seattle area. Go figure!
Format was 500pt Steamroller. My lists:
Haley
- Lancer
9x Stormguard
9x Long Gunners
8x Trenchers
Captain Maxwell Finn
Journeyman Warcaster
Stryker
- Lancer
- Ironclad
8x Long Gunners
8x Trenchers
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Journeyman Warcaster
Game 1: Killing Fields against Khador
I played against Old Witch in this game, played by a local player named Sean. His list was:
Old Witch
- Scrapjack
Uhlans
Mortars
Man O' War Demo Crew
Manhunter
Maybe some other stuff
I took Haley and lost. The main thing I remember was on turn2, charging his Manhunter and Uhlans with my Stormguard - I put some hurt on the Uhlans and then forgot to attack the Manhunter. This proved to be costly as they pretty thoroughly wiped out my Stormguard. I had feated that turn too, so I wasted double attaks.
Game 2: Assassination against Cryx
The guy was playing the Cryx list from the latest NQ. He had:
Goreshade
3 or 4 of those leapy jacks (Stalkers)
2x Necrotechs
Some other stuff (Bane thralls maybe?)
I won this game on VPs. I danced Haley forward and used the turtle while rolling smoke - it was relatively uneventful. I killed one of his Stalkers after he wasted it leaping it at a couple of Trenchers. I was actively playing a VP denial game. On the last turn I poked Haley's head out a bit hoping Goreshade would go for the Mage Blight - but time was called. If Goreshade went for the Blight it would have been nice, as it would have put him smack in the range of my Long Gunners and I'd pop feat to drop him. Oh, and Goreshade's feat got me some VPs when I ripped apart the Thralls.
Game 3: Pendulum against Cryx
For game 3 I played against Chris, one of the buddies I was traveling with. I took Haley (again, sigh - every match I had this game Haley was a better choice than Stryker). He had:
Deneghra
- 3 arc node jacks
- Shooty helljack guy on spider legs
- Bane Thralls
- 2x Pistol Wraiths
- Scarlocke
- Some other stuff
Chris is pretty new to WM; he doesn't get to play much so I expected an easy game of it. As it was this was very tight - I barely won on VPs. The main thing that happened was Deneghra popping feat and then hitting my Stormguard with Dark Seduction. Those idiots are only CMD 8 because they're fearless. Cue us figuring out exactly how the rules worked on this - are they affected by the Barrier? Are they still under Dark Seduction? Fortunately we had Jason Soles (one of the WM creators) running things, and he ruled yes on both, so the Stormguard didn't do much but kill a Long Gunner. However I couldn't activate them on the next turn, so they couldn't charge the two Bonejacks standing in front of them....
I had to go for a tight VP grab and pulled it off. Even made an assassination run against Deneghra with 3 (count 'em, 3) Trenchers that I came very close to pulling off. As it was I won by like a single VP.
Game 4: Assassination against Khador
I fought a Sorscha Woosh with Haley and got owned. Two things I screwed up:
1) Should have rolled smoke. I tried a second turn charge with the Trenchers in the hopes that I could pin Sorscha back.
2) When Sorscha went for the woosh -> charge -> feat I forgot I had the barrier up. She would have failed her charge (not enough speed to get where she was going) and the Long Gunners would have blown her away. As it was I didn't remember the barrier until he had killed half my army, so oh well.
I went 2-2, and with half a brain could have gone 3-1. As it was I got the faction coin (rough day for Cygnar when a guy who goes 2-2 gets the faction coin) and more importantly I kept my tournament record above 500. Currently my Steamroller record stands at 8-7.
