Subject: Daemonic Spawn...worth it?

It seems to me for 20 points that daemonic spawn are quite a good deal. The only thing I have a problem with is fluff, by breaking the sacred number of the squad with their inclusion. So, when you have the points left over, do you include daemonic spawn in your lists?

What? Are you trying to outdo beef in most atrocious mangling of the English language? Or is mommy gone and you are not supposed to be on the computer? Do try to find the shift key and make a modicum of an attempt at spelling and grammar. As is every post I've seen from you has been akin to the jumbled atrocity of a four year old banging at a keyboard. Sorry Hellfurry, didn't mean to derail. Alas, I have no idea how useful Spawns are these days in 40kv4. They're great fun in WHFB....

Basically, they're a highly cost-effective soak in units that aren't being transported, move at infantry speeds, don't infiltrate, and already have an aspiring champion (either because the unit needs an champ, or gets one for free due to being in a favored squad in a cult list). They're even better if the unit has a skill (e.g., Tank Hunter) that makes extra ablative marines more expensive but doesn't confer any real benefit to them.
Their limitation is the above. If the squad is shooty, it's going to generally be better to buy two more marines instead of an AC upgrade plus a spawn. If it's assaulty, you don't want it slogging across the board at infantry speeds.
So, basically, they're absolutely beautiful on Emperor's Children tank-hunting havocs and can be handy on various cult army squads. Otherwise, it's tricky to find a situation where they're worth adding to the list.

Well, lets take Lustwing for instance.
I am not depending on deepstriking, so I figured some more wounds with daemonic spawn/chaos hounds would be good to add to keep the termies alive while slogging across the board. In COD I can see those units with followers being really tough to break apart. Plus it keeps torrent of fire incindences low.
Plus with lustwing, I can keep the magic numbers alive for fluff reasons (2 daemon spawn and 4 hounds/unit). Or is my math wrong?

I don't think the followers are worth it in a lustwing list. Due to the mixed armour saves rule you cannot remove the hounds and spawn as the first casualties. In a power-armoured emperor's children list tuned for cities of death, the spawn could really shine: 1. With the addition of a spawn, your favoured squad has 8 wounds, so your opponent needs to cause 7 unsaved wounds before your unit becomes non-scoring. 2. The sewer rats strategem helps against the mobility problems you get when you include a spawn. The same is true for thousand sons, with a spawn and a single thrall wizard, your favoured squad has 20 wounds, which means your opponent somehow has to inflict 16 unsaved wounds (15 if you sacrifice the thrall)... Although this might be considered a bit overkill, the spawn costs less then a rubric marine and does not die outright to missile launchers, melta guns and lascannons.

I'm adding one to a unit of World Eater possessed. I'd much rather lose a 20 pt spawn than two 32 point possessed, plus if by some miracle he makes it into close combat, seems like d6 S5 attacks would be very nice.

I use them in LatD and as a stand alone squad they are amazing.
It takes a demolisher or another str 10 weapon to auto kill them. Its pretty funny because lascannons like to hit them.

He doesnt lie. Cept he misrepresents them, as being cuddly red balls of fun, while in reality they are vicious demons of man destroying power.

I agree with cavalcade although I think they're worth a shot on emperor's children havocs regardless of the type of game. You're getting the AC free on a shooty unit, so the spawn is a solid upgrade for the unit.
I'd certainly not take them for lustwing though, since you'd have the afore mentioned mixed armor issues plus you lose deepstrike.
