Hey,

Wow, story by Dag Nabbit. Huh. A 40k comic that doesn't suck?

That'd be a nice change.

Looked at it at my FLGS. Not really impressed.

GW makes it soooo easy. They really should hire Jester to write their stories, they'd be much more interesting and probably less closet homoerotic slash fic.

My prediction is that it will be like every other comic they have ever released just a bit shinier. Oooh and a lot more machismo, so all in all crap!

My body became as a sheath for his mighty weapon, my insides ached as he thrust it time after time in me. Just then, my gun bucked to life, spitting white death into his traitor's face. We locked in a parody of a lover's embrace and rolled down a hill of corpses as Bacchus Prime burned. As I twisted in mortal combat with this foul heretic, my thoughts travelled impossibly to my novitiate in the Golden Fists legion, when I first met the Service Stud.

I got a dozen copies in at my shop, it sold out the first few days. Decent story and level of art was ok, much better than the older Warhammer comics. A good read, all in all.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

If it had been a lighter comic week I might have picked it up, but there were just too many Civil War tie-in's and my wallet was already sad from X-mas. Plus it was about the Black Templars.

Art is okay (seems derivative of Mobius' work with Metabaron, at least to me). The lines are, however, classic homoerotic fanfic. The 12 year olds will love it, though.

The writing was pretty bad. I did like most of the art. I do think however, you usually have to give a comic more than a few issues before it really starts rolling well.

But yeah, the dialog could be cleaned up quite a bit.

I read the comic and was not impressed. It looks like there are two-three different stories taking place, but I'm not too positive. One could be a flashback scene.

The art is slightly above average. The coloring is interesting, but a bit overdone on the blood.

The dialogue, well, stinks.

The explanations of what are Space Marines is very hammy. Hard to describe, but once you read it, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Overall, C-

You can't overdo blood. Not at GW. Blood goes with everything: skulls, chains, skulls, spiky bits, skulls, power armor, skulls, pointy hats, skulls, oversized weapons. It's the best accessory ever!

Checking out the "free preview" comic Mettle, the artwork is rather bad. The artist seems to have no sense of perspective. A little amateurish if you ask me.

It's crap like this that proves that the marketing department at GW has boiled away all the fluffy substance of Warhammer until all that's left are the vapid bare bones....mostly skulls.

No. It means they didn't hire a good team. Hopefully it will change, as this issue was pretty bad.

I honestly didn't think it was that bad. There are aboout oh at least 50 comics on the market that are a lot worse. I'm going to pick it up for a while. There really are a lot of haters on these boards.

it wasnt that great either, at least inferno had some good bits in it. this was just not real good. As for "haters" well there are some but alot of us are just a bit jaded. GW keeps trying to get by rather than going all out. Tell me they dont have the money to get some one like Frank Miller and Jim Lee to do this book. Honestly you know it would look nothing like this one and would be big!

I honestly don't think they can afford Jim Lee and Millar's art is horrible, great stories bad art. The fact is there really are not enough good comic artists to go around and anyone talanted is going to be hired By DC, Marvel, Darkhorse long before Boom. The only real critisim I have is why din't they give the license to a stronger company. The real test for me will be if they manage to put the book out on time

You're joking, right?  We're talking about Frank "Sin City" Miller.   His writing is solid, but his art is the main attraction.

Frank Miller combines the best of both worlds: solid, stylistic writing with solid, stylistic art.

But you don't even need a Stan Lee and Frank Miller to make a good comic. Nor have the companies you mentioned (Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse) monopolized all the best artists and story tellers. IDW, Burlyman and Avatar, are three that came off the top of my head and all have well written, well drawn output despite being much smaller operations than even Black Library. It's just that GW pays crap and you get what you pay for. Even here, from what I've seen the art isn't particularly bad but the story is absolutely awful.

Hello Millest

I'm based in London and the only thing I've seen about this comic is whats on the GW website... helpfully there is no info about UK distributors at all!!!! WTF!

Why promote a comic and provide no detials about how to buy it? Classic GW marketing.

From what I've been able to work out however us Brits will have to find a decent UK comic book store (which can be hard unless you go to "second mortgage" Forbidden Planet), or most likely we will have to mail order from the states.

To be honest from the look of these test sheets I can't be bothered to ship one from America.

And I agree the writing is hammy beyond endurance, Brother Brammer? What the hell kind of a name for a marine is that?

What next Veteran Sargeant Steve? And Librarian Kevin?

Ah yes, the eternal dance between haters and fan-boys with GW providing the background music.

Looking back at my own post ... my tone was indeed much harsher than I intended and that's not good.  Granted, I've been extremely disappointed with GW's offerings the past few years ...especially commercial attempts like this one far outside their expertise... , but I'm sure they're doing the best they can.  There have been a few things I've quite enjoyed.   If I actually get to the point of "hating" GW, there wouldn't be much point in saying anything at all on a fan board.  However, only expressing disappointment is not very constructive either. My bad.

Here's to 2007 and a new hope for a new attitude.
