Hey Dakka,

I'm looking to get some help with designing a Tau list for my son. He is just starting to collect and paint so I thought I'd see what might be the best way to go to get him an army that is both competitive and fun to play. If you've got any suggestions or lists I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks alot

You know whats interesting, the battle force box for tau comes with a perfect selection of units, id start there and just add to whatever aspects he likes best.
On a personal note ive always found mech tau to be very irritating play against, its a very simple and effective list where you mount two fire warrior squads in devilfish and back it up with suited commanders (never take the ethereal unless you want to be fluffy they are just a liability) and two hammerheads. Add broadsides with shield drones or whatever other suits suit you better.

This is a bare list, and it comes out to 1715 points, so you have 35 points for vehichle upgrades and such...

Angron's list is a bit odd but workable, my changes would be to have plasma rifles and missile pods with multi-trackers for all the crisis suits, the Shas O, should have Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Cyclic Ion Blaster, HW Multi-Tracker, HW Black Sun Filter. Drop a squad of Fire Warriors and their Devilfish to put all the fire warriors up to max units of 12.

P.s. Either list related to that number of crisis suits is not going to be cheap. . . 15 each for crisis suits last time I checked. . .

This will give you alot more fire power at all ranges and will give you a wider range of targets to perform well against.
