1. That one can be kind of tricky. If the icon is stuck way out in front, he can get range sniped. If he's way in the back, you handicap the placement of your daemons. I would lean towards having him towards the front of the unit, but with other models at least as close to the enemy to provide ablative wounds to protect him.
2. You do not have to specify which one is the daemonvessel, but there should be some way to determine it so that you don't have your opponent complaining that you selectively picked which one was the vessel after the fact. Also, if the vessel has chains, those need to be modelled. Lastly, if all of your AC's are identically equipped, you are pretty much wasting points on the vessel AC. Most people at most put a power weapon on the vessel since it fights with the GD's strength until the vessel pops. But even that might be a waste of points if he pops on turn 2.
