Im curious what suggestions people have for making a Rogue Trader Era Drop Pod. I recently acquired an Ultramarines Rogue Trader Era army and thought to add some Drop Pods.

To be honest, I dont even remember drop pods being mentioned in RT. Suprisingly enough. but there were some resin drop pods made that could fit the bill. Very rare. the only time I have seen pics of it was when Insaniak auctioned his off on ebay. Here are the pics:

They were certainly mentioned in the original Rogue Trader book; they had rules for 'em, too. They never made a model in 40K scale, but there were Epic-scale pods: www.solegends.com/citcat911/c2122epicimptanks-h.htm I made something similar for my 40K pods. I used a piece of Rubbermaid-brand sealable container, flipped upside-down with cicular windows glued to the sides, and a storm bolter stuck on top. They aren't a perfect match (rather flatter on the bottom than the originals) but they capture the basic look, I think.

Could you provide a page number for the RT source? I have my RT book next to me eargerly awaiting where I might find the reference.

I'm certain there were no official drop pod models made until 3rd ed. At least not for 40k, as Pariah Press notes there were a variety of Epic-scaled ones made. That said, I want to say some WD showed off some peoples own peculiar conversions as part of an article on either an individual artist or perhaps some Games Day (or similar) convention coverage. I'm pretty sure it wasn't anything like the current designs though, being more like something out of Aliens or other hard sci-fi.
Hellfury, the one you posted above, was that a studio conversion cast up, pre-forgerworld perhaps? It's obviously based on the plastic landspeeder hull, and a pretty damn fine conversion at that.

Best thing I can come up with off the top of my head would be the old Epicast Termite: http://www.epicast.com/lostbanned/EpicastTermite.jpg There were also these, but I don't actually recall seeing them in person: http://www.epicast.com/lostbanned/pods.jpg There was also an Ork "dropkan" that I seem to recall they made, but that doesn't really fit with the UM stuff. It was a studio conversion, built by Matt Weaver back when he was still in Oz (I believe he works for FW now... at at least he did at one point). The main body was foamcore, with plasticard paneling, landspeeder engines and various gubbinz slapped on in blank spots. There were 200 of them cast for the Lanienna IV roadshow here in Oz, back in the late '90s. They were sold only at the event, and came with a certificate of authenticity and rules for their use in 3rd edition. From memory (mine's still in a box somewhere) they had no weapons, armour 10 all round, and had to remain closed on the turn they landed. The following turn they opened up and the troops could disembark.

Awesome, well, not the rules, but definitely thanks on the info as to where the castings came from. Sounds like a good old fashioned promo the likes I haven't seen since, well, the 90's! I had forgotten about the Epicast stuff Cygnuss posted above. Here are links for the lazy: Epicast Termite Epicast Drop Pods Did Armorcast do similar things around the same time, right before GW gave them the shaft? While I can't say i've seen the Epicast drop pods in person either, I do recall their castings being of similar quality to Armorcasts, that is to say: beautiful cream resin very well cast with little to no flaws, but lacking slightly in details (particularly on large peices, much less so on terrain).

They had Drop Pods in Epic, but that may have been 2nd edition. Close enough to RT? Those pods were more like baseballs that the top half opened like flower petals.
You can view them in the '91 citadel catalog on The Stuff of Legends site.

I don't remember anything about drop pods from RT. May have been in the compedium (with the initial SM army list) but even there it doesn't strike a cord. Terminators had their teleport homers but I don't remember drop pods.

Epic Space marine was the first game that had them. They opened up flower-like. I would get some vegetable steamers and work from there.

Huge kudos and a month's supply of free broccoli to the first person to field and all-veggie-steamer pod army at a public event!

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Rogue Trader pages 107-108 (though they're called "Landing Pods." I considered going the veggie steamer route, but I eventually discarded the idea. I will try to post a pic of my pod soon, but I'm notoriously unreliable, so don't hold your breath.
