I've been tinkering with the 2,000 point list I posted a while back and in addition I've uped it to 3,000 points for Apocalypse.  Part of my fluff is that this particular Vostroyan regiment specializes in urban warfare, so please keep that in mind when critiquing this list:  Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated.

Vostroyan Firstborn IX
3,000 Pts - Imperial Guard Roster

++DOCTRINES++

Special Equipment: Carapace Armour
Restricted Troops: Ogryns
Skills and Drills: Iron Discipline
Skills and Drills: Die-Hards
Skills and Drills: Sharpshooters

++HQ++

Vostroyan Firstborn IX Command Platoon @ 449 Pts

Major-General Gennady Rokhov (Heroic Senior Officer) @ 87 Pts
     Doctrines: Iron Discipline; Die-Hards
     Weapons: Laspistol; Power Weapon
     Wargear: Bionics, Surveyor

   Command Squad (4 Guardsmen) @ 38 Pts
     Doctrines: Die-Hards
Weapons: Lasgun (x2); Grenade Launcher (x2)
     Wargear: Company Banner

I've kept my Command  Platoon (relatively) cheap.  He's definitely the 'lead from the rear' type.

Ranger One-One and Ranger One-Two (Sentinel squadron) @ 90 Pts
   Weapons: Multilaser (x2)

Fire Support Squad @ 110 Pts
   Doctrines: Sharpshooters
Weapons: Lasgun (x3); Heavy Bolter (x3)

Fire Support Squad @ 110 Pts
   Doctrines: Sharpshooters
Weapons: Lasgun (x3); Heavy Bolter (x3)

Inquisitor Lord Miriyanna Hand (Witch Hunter) @ 153 Pts
   Weapons: Bolt Pistol, Power Weapon
Wargear: Psychic Hood, Liber Heresius, Hexagrammic Wards, Psyocculum, Auspex
Psychic Powers: Word of the Emperor, Purgatus

   Sage @ 10 Pts
     Weapons: Laspistol; Close Combat Weapon

   Familiar (x2) @ 12 Pts
     Weapons: Close Combat Weapon

A Witch Hunter Inquisitor is fluffy for the Vostroyans, considering thei background during the Horus Heresy.  It also adds a little bit of color to a generally uniform army.  I want to keep her in the army in a supporting role, but I'm willing to work on her wargear.  I don't really want a large retinue, just a Sage (to document the activities of the Vostroyan IX) and the two servo skulls to round out the mandatory retinue.

++ELITES++

Rudiak's Rangers (10 Veterans) @ 160 Pts
   Doctrines: Die-Hards
Weapons: Lasgun (x6); Flamer (x3); Laspistol & Power Fist (x1); Frag Grenades
   Wargear: Surveyor

My main unit to advance and grab objectives, especially in urban terrain.  I've given them flamers despite their high Ballistic Skill due to their added value in the terrain-dense urban enviroments.  As for the power fist, I took it because I like the model.  We don't want anyone accusing me of power gaming, do we?

Krourk Ogryn Auxilia (5 Ogryns & Bone 'ead) @ 270 Pts
   Weapons: Ripper Gun; Frag Grenades
   Wargear: Melta Bombs

   Chimera @ 105 Pts
Weapons: Multilaser, Hull Heavy Bolter, Pintle Heavy Stubber
Vehicle Upgrades: Rough Terrain Modification; Smoke Launchers

Krourk Ogryn Auxilia (5 Ogryns & Bone 'ead) @ 270 Pts
   Weapons: Ripper Gun; Frag Grenades
   Wargear: Melta Bombs

   Chimera @ 105 Pts
Weapons: Multilaser, Hull Heavy Bolter, Pintle Heavy Stubber
Vehicle Upgrades: Rough Terrain Modification; Smoke Launchers

Having seen the admittedly blurry pics of the new Ogryns from Games Day, I've decided to add two units to my 3,000 point list.  They will act as counter-chargers and to grab objectives and to give me some close combat ability.

++TROOPS++

Infantry Platoon Alpha @ 306 Pts

   Lieutenant Kwarski's Command Squad (4 Guardsmen & Junior Officer) @ 76 Pts
     Doctrines: Die-Hards; Iron Discipline
     Weapons: Lasgun (x3); Laspistol & CCW (x1); Flamer (x1)

   Infantry Squad Alpha-One (9 Guardsmen & Sergeant) @ 115 Pts
     Weapons: Lasgun (x7); Laspistol & CCW(x1); Plasmagun (x1); Lascannon (x1)

   Infantry Squad Alpha-Two (9 Guardsmen & Sergeant) @ 115 Pts
     Weapons: Lasgun (x7); Laspistol & CCW(x1); Plasmagun (x1); Lascannon (x1)

Infantry Platoon Beta @ 306 Pts

   Lieutenant Haik's Command Squad (4 Guardsmen & Junior Officer) @ 76 Pts
     Doctrines: Die-Hards; Iron Discipline
     Weapons: Lasgun (x3); Laspistol & CCW (x1); Flamer (x1)

   Infantry Squad Beta-One (9 Guardsmen & Sergeant) @ 115 Pts
     Weapons: Lasgun (x7); Laspistol & CCW(x1); Plasmagun (x1); Lascannon (x1)

   Infantry Squad Beta-Two (9 Guardsmen & Sergeant) @ 115 Pts
     Weapons: Lasgun (x7); Laspistol & CCW(x1); Plasmagun (x1); Lascannon (x1)

Las/plas.  Nothing to complain about here.

Infantry Platoon Delta @ 306 Pts

   Lieutenant Vladyka's Command Squad (4 Guardsmen & Junior Officer) @ 76 Pts
     Doctrines: Die-Hards; Iron Discipline
     Weapons: Lasgun (x3); Laspistol & CCW (x1); Flamer (x1)

   Infantry Squad Delta-One (9 Guardsmen & Sergeant) @ 96 Pts
     Weapons: Lasgun (x7); Laspistol & CCW(x1); Flamer (x1); Heavy Bolter (x1)

   Infantry Squad Delta-Two (9 Guardsmen & Sergeant) @ 96 Pts
     Weapons: Lasgun (x7); Laspistol & CCW(x1); Flamer (x1); Heavy Bolter (x1)

This loadout of this platoon is a money-savong strategy, pure and simple.  With no discounts, this army is going to cost almost $1,100.  Yikes!

++FAST ATTACK++

Infernus (Hellhound) @ 123 Pts
Weapons: Inferno Cannon; Hull Mounted Heavy Bolter
Vehicle Upgrades: Rough Terrain Modifications; Smoke Launchers

Ranger Two-One and Ranger Two-Two (Sentinel squadron) @ 90 Pts
   Weapons: Multilaser (x2)

Ranger Three-One and Ranger Three-Two (Sentinel squadron) @ 90 Pts
   Weapons: Multilaser (x2)

++HEAVY SUPPORT++

Vostroya's Honour (Leman Russ) @ 168 Pts
Weapons: Battle Cannon; Hull Mounted Heavy Bolter; Sponson Heavy Bolters
Vehicle Upgrades: Extra Armour; Rough Terrain Modification; Smoke Launchers

Turtolsky's Shadow (Leman Russ) @ 168 Pts
Weapons: Battle Cannon; Hull Mounted Heavy Bolter; Sponson Heavy Bolters
Vehicle Upgrades: Extra Armour; Rough Terrain Modification; Smoke Launchers

Kabrak's Maw (Leman Russ Demolisher) @ 179 Pts
Weapons: Demolisher Cannon; Hull Mounted Lascannon
Vehicle Upgrades: Extra Armour; Rough Terrain Modification; Smoke Launchers;    Searchlight

I don't foresee many complaints here other than all of the Rough Terrain Modifications and maybe the lascannon on the Demolisher.  The Rough Terrain Modifications should prove worth their points in urban terrain.  As for the lascannon, I'm stealing the heavy bolters for the sponsons on the Russes and don't feel up to converting another heavy bolter from the heavy weapon sprue.  Additionally, the lascannon will keep the Demolisher a threat even at the longer ranges in Apocalypse or if the Demolisher cannon is destroyed.

Total Roster Cost: 3,000 points

NOTE:  The units in DARK BLUE are those that have been added to the base 2,000 point list.

Vostroyans. For gamers with more money than sense. Harder and longer to paint, more restrictive in available models and far more costly. Replace the word Vostroyan with Cadian and take a nice holiday with the savings between the two. You can also more readily convert Cadians to what you are doing.

If your really like the Napoleonesque style answer this: how will you make the vehicles fit withy your pre-Victoriana army look. It wont work, trust me. Incompatibility with the look for vehicles was the dowside to the Praetorians.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Dude, don't be a dink. Answer his post or shut it.

As for vehicle compatibility.....

It's alot of work but looks great. Perhaps a smaller version would work well for what he is wanting to do.

Mind how you are talking. Look at the prices, there is a case to answer. Ghaz has the model buzz for a $1,100 army, by his calculations. The hobby is as much about the price as the lists.

Ya know, Orlanth is right Ghaz. How dare you spend your money in whatever fashion you so desire. What's wrong with you? Where is your social conscience! How can you buy more expensive pieces when so many can afford only plastics? For shame, Ghaz... For shame!

And for all you purchasers of DKoK or Elysians.... Suckers! You surely were played!

ender502, can you hear the sarcasm? I thought so!

Orlanth, you needn't be so concerned. I'm sure that if this army lands Ghaz in the poorhouse, he'll still be able to rustle up some bits of cardboard to play Basehammer with.  :S

Price has nothing to do with the topic of this thread. I'm well aware of what this army will cost, thank you very much. If you'd bother to notice, I'm the one who did the math on the cost. If it concerned me in the least, then I wouldn't have posted this, now would I? No, I wouldn't. Now the next person who comments on the price and I'll have Yakface close this thread and have him give them a lecture about Forum Rule #2.

You might want room for some more goodies.

FRom all indicators, there's no force org. chart in Apocalypse. That might colour a list you might make.

WOW! 6 posts and not a single one on topic. Good job guys.

Ghaz, I'll go with the assumption that you are happy with the 1st 2K and don't want to change it.

I'd consider dropping the 3rd platoon and adding 2 IF squads in its place. Any extra points you need could be made back by dropping the stubbers from the other chimeras.

With the rumored no FOC in APOC, it might be worth upgrading some or all of the Sentinels to Lascanons for the extra tanks we are likely to see.

I think Bassies will really start to be the King of Battle with their range. The ability to fire directly with littel fear of return fire is nice too. They'll also provide you with something to hit enemy indirect. The fact that they are cheaper than the LRs and don't need any extras besides indirect means you've got even more points to play with.

Just some food for thought. Digest as you will...

I kept to the Force Organization chart in this instance because 1) It leads to a more balanced army in my opinion and 2) I can use the forces in a standard game at 3,000 points if necessary. My 'goodies' will be a Baneblade and with the VDR available, I'm considering some sort of 'super Basilisk' that will use the big cloverleaf blast marker. I just need to find a model kit with a suitably large enough gun.

I think sticking with the FOC is a GOOD idea Ghaz.

I didn't realize VDR was in APOC. Maybe a multi-barrelled Bassey with TL or quad guns on a double wide chasis. Hell. Maybe I'll due a quad earth shaker on a BB chasis.

Ity may not be exactly like VDR. Read point number 2 on THIS POSTER from Games Day Chicago.

I like the list and I like that you are sticking with the FoC. So far there has been conflicting rumors about that, so better safe than sorry.

I like Flagg's idea of a double or quadruple barreled earthshaker mounted on a Baneblade chasis.

I myself have been contemplating doing a guard army, I am actually considering the Armored Company with three Baneblades, but that's just me!

Keep us informed and post pics of your progress with the army!

Unfortunately I don't have a good digital camera. That and glaciers move faster than I paint.

I'd consider dropping the 3rd platoon and adding 2 IF squads in its place.

I had considered that, but wouldn't the extra command bubble be more useful on the larger Apocalypse boards? Or would the increased mobility compensate for that, given that this army is designed for an urban enviroment?

EDIT: Dropping the third platoon and adding two Armoured Fist squads with no upgrades whatsoever puts me 62 points over.  No way that I'll be able to add two of them to my list without dropping something else (which I would be loathe to do).

There is no such thing as xx points over. 3000 points is the minimum. You can play 3000 vs 5000 is what I hear. The player with fewer points gets things like strategems to make up the point difference.

When I'm designing an army to be 3,000 points and it's 3,062 points, then it's over.
