Codex reads: Any sub-unit may be mounted in a chimera transport at 70 pts.

Does this mean that if I split a 22 man unit (col, Kage and 20 LC's) into 5 sub-units I can give each of those units a separate Chimera?

Yup.

Since Kage and Shaeffer are also Independant Characters they can be joined to any other unit as well. For this reason, I've always thought that he(they) are the best special character going for their points. The only problem is that a dedicated transport can only carry the unit it was purchased for so if he joins a unit they can't ride. But he could ride in an Armoured Fist Chimera if he joined one of their units. The real trick IMO about keeping him and Kage independant though is that they can spread the fearless around, but I guess if you love chimeras they work for that too.

Yeah, but if you take say 4 Last Chancers + Schaeffer and Kage

Col-
Kage-
2 Chancers- Lascannon (one being a specialist)
1 specialist (sniper)
1 specialist (sniper)

Give them all a Chimera, you can have them stay out of their transport at the start of the game, then move into some woods,  Col and Kage would now become independent and can join a Grenadier Squad each.  Basically leaving your 5 Chimera's roaming the board each shooting 9 shots per turn (HB, Multi-laser, Stubber).  They are roughly worth the price of an infantry squad and can pump out 3x's the fire power.
