An odd situation came up recently and I was curious if it was handled correctly.
A small enemy unit charged into an area where there were several (3 as I remember) friendly units. The enemy unit declared a primary and 2 secondary charge target and was able to contact all 3 of them by the standard assault movement rules. Now, after the first round of combat, there were only a couple of models left in the enemy unit and all 3 friendly units still had at least one model left in them.
The question came up when it came to pile in moves. Since it was the enemy turn, the enemy unit piled in first. After that, friendly unit #1 piled in (into base to base whenever possible). Then friendly unit #2 piled in. When it came time for friendly unit #3 to pile in, there was no longer any room to get into base to base with the enemy. At that point we said that combat was broken for friendly unit #3 and allowed them to consolidate. Was that the correct way to handle that or should pile in moves be done simultaneously forcing each of the 3 friendly units to get a model into base to base if possible before moving in the remainder of the various friendly models?
