Quickie question before I head off to work:

- Can remnant squads take doctrines?

Normally I would say yes without flinching, but there's something in the wording of the rules that makes me wonder:

Guard infantry
In several of the following Doctrine descriptions, the term Guard infantry is used. In this context, the definition includes any [...] Hardended veteran squads, normal infantry platoon squads and Armoured Fist Squads. - Codex: IG - p55

The remnant squads can't really be qualified as 'normal' infantry squads, due to their size. But then again, they're just as much a part of the regiment as anyone else, so there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to use the same special equipment and training as the rest of the lads.

- IF remnants can take doctrines, can remnant squads benefit from different doctrines than their 'parent' platoon?

For instance, Light infantry is applied to Guard Infantry UNITS, and is not obligatory for every unit in the army. Does 'unit' here refer to the individual squads, or to the units as chosen on the Force organization chart?

IMO, yes, remnant squads can take doctrines.

Unit refers to squad, not Force Organization selection.
