Hey all,
Im new here but have been on Warseer for a few years. Figured I'd check check it out. I've been playing 40k for 8 years and love it. I've played every race in the 40k universe over my time and have advanced to my favorite two: Space Wolves and Orks. I have 5000+ points of SW and have just started Orks (I made the ork vow not to play them until the new dex came out. I'm more of a serious modeler and casual player. We have a local group here that gets together about twice a week to game/model/paint. Anyways, just wanted to stop in and say Hi!

Konichi wa and welcome to dakka! I have spent a lot of time in Japan and have always wondered why wargaming is not as popular there as it seems it should be. There is already everything there from Tamiya to support the hobby (though aimed mostly at gundam models) yet I have only seen warhammer in about 2 toy shops in akihibara. What is the word on the street about it there? People just not heard of it or is it price related (gundam figures are so amazingly cheap compared to say, tau crisis suits)?

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!

Greetings Gannon! Excellent! I hope you have some interesting observations about cm to inches .

We are Metric here in Aus, but use inches and 'feet' in the game. How about you guys?

I did 3 years in Kyoto and now I'm just down the road in Red China. Where in Japan are you?

Part of it was severe lack of rules in Japanese and lack of presence in shops. GW now has a half-dozen or more shops including one near the big Mandrake at Nakano (IIRC) in Tokyo. But I think Japan has prohibative taxes on imported toys and also Japanese have severely limited space and kids have severely limited spare time.

I've heard that there are long term declines in things like plastic models and manga due to the juku/club pressure on kids.

@ juddski
Thanks sorry for the late reply.

@ legoburner
kid_kyoto is absolutely right. Most of the hobby consists of young men and women surprisingly that have steady jobs and a little time on their hands. WHFB has been stapled in here as the mainstay from GW. Although 40K has gained speed lately with translations into japanese with the BfM boxed set and recent codices. I saw one in Hiroshima recently but has been sold since my last visit. The price is another factor. The last time I went to Tokyo and visited the one shop I could find that did sell 40k, a box of SW Grey Hunters was 6500 yen. Which is about $60 USD. I had saved up quite a bit of cash for the trip in the hopes of finding a place that had GW, only to end up keeping it and ordering online. Inflation is a bitch.

@ akira
We use in. here as well. Although the Japanese BfM set does use cm for their measurements.

@ kid
I'm in Yamaguchi Prefecture near Hiroshima. Been here for almost 5 years now and enjoy it very much.

Too bad you missed out. Oh and you wouldn't have wanted to bring your girlfriend if you'd come. Japanese ladies are so fine.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Zero arguments here. Possibly the finest in the world, IMO.

They are. I've got one.

They can be real ball-breakers once married, in truth. Sometimes you'll have to stand on your inalienable rights as a non-Japanese man.

War is generally unpopular in Japan. The Japanese population are broadly supportive of their pacifist constitution. The Self Defence Forces have constant problems recruiting. In such an atmosphere it's not likely that an already nerdy image passtime will become very popular.

I´ll use this thread to introduce me as I´m living also in Japan. I´m always "converting" something although I don´t play 40K much.
BTW I´m always open to a game unless it´s an official event as I play a totally no-no eldar count as using my old and sacred Warzone Mishima minis.

I live in Kobe, just on the middle of Mishimaland. And I found one of the few LFS shops outside Tokyo at a convinient distance from home.
