Longtime lurker, fairly new poster...

Thought I'd share a modular table I've slowly been working on. I planned it out as an abandoned industrial park with lots of rubble and cracked concrete. The table consists of six 2'x2' sections with the streets and canal laid out so the sections can be rotated and rearranged in various positions. I've been using the vinyl GW roads and need to add more rubble piles and scorched areas to give a more weathered feel.

I'm planning on using the GW water effects for the canal to give it more depth...has anybody used it over large areas? And if so, did it turn out okay? Any suggestions for using the stuff would be appreciated.

C&C are of course welcome. Thanks for looking.

Yup, they're the ones that come in the 10' roll. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and how easy they are to use. Really easy to cut and they glue down without any problems.

My only complaint is that since the road image is printed on, it's a bit too "smooth" for my taste. I'm planning on going back and cutting small craters, adding rubble and painting scorch marks to help match the rest of the board.

There is a lot of hate out there for the GW water effects and the poor quality results they give. The best available option is generally regarded as the fake water options from Woodland Scenics and I would recommend you try and get some of that instead (much cheaper too!)

I think it's a great start. You've gone with a large enough section base (2x2 sections) that you could really get in there and detail the hell out of this thing.

I worked a 2x2 section myself as a small terrain piece/project/test bed. And it's really amazing the level of detail you can go into when you have static terrain. Since you have all the basic layout worked out, you can really get in depth with this project and push it to a whole other level.

As it sits now, your buildings, ruins, rubble are all in nice little free floating 'packages' all over your board. What I would like to see is rubble spilled over into the streets, color variation from building to building, rubble pile to rubble pile. Did I say more rubble? More height is another thing I would really like to see with a board this size. 4x8 you can fit some nice sized buildings. A 3 story building here and there could really give this table a better city feel. Right now it feels much more 'industrial sector' than 'lived in imperial city'.

I like the direction you're going. I'm just here to help push it that extra mile.

If you want to check out where I went with my cityfight piece, check out the link below. It's never been finished (I'm terribly ADD when it comes to modeling sometimes...) but it will give you some reference to draw from at the very least ^_^. Links below:

Thanks for the links/photodump...very impressive work. I'm definitely going to follow your advice on adding rubble piles, 'cause at the moment it's too flat and clean. I wanted to go with taller buildings, but was trying to keep enough room open for vehicles and firelines so games wouldn't get bogged down.

I've played a few games on my small 2x2 a while back, and you really end up streamlining the gameplay a lot. Vehicles having limited movement capabilities really bring out the best in your infantry (so long as the buildings are able to be entered!). It also creates fire lanes and choke points that really add to the deployment phase that extra depth most games are lacking.
