Does anyoneone have any ideas for modelling winged warriors. I've seen some good conversions but would like something different to the usual, while keeping the cost down.

If you have chaos possessed you could use the backpacks. But they might be a little small and you'd have to cut out the backpack part first.

One thing that always seemed obvious to me but have never seen was insect/beetle wings. Its could be done easily with plasticard as most of the detail would be painted on rather then physically modeled onto the wing.

I dont see myself playing 'nids ever but if i did i would do that.

But nids are more like dinosaurs and lizards than like insects. So imo leathery wings would work better.

Meh, to each his own. Always been a bug swarm to me, just depends on the painter/modeler.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

there was a really cool fly/ beetle wing nid army a couple years ago I don't remember where I saw it.

I think it was in WD around the time of the last nid book.

Somewhere around here there are Vespids with insect wings. If you do a search you'll probably find them. They would look pretty good even with "lizardy" nids.

Blue Table Painting did a fairly reasonable job of accomplishing this.
You should check out their site:

www.bluetablepainting.com

They cust their wings out of the plastic of blister packs & painted them up.

Go to the gallery & look for the Tyranids. I'm certain you'll find them there.
You might get some great inspiration.

Check the bitz thread. I notice there are several leathery wing options. If you have time to wait, if the demon codex comes out you might have plastic fury wings available.

Note-I played against a list where a person had obtain large moth wings (real ones from a zoology or whatever contact). He put them on warriors. They were super fragile but excellent. A plasticard version would look quite well I’d think.

Additionally there are a plethora of non-GW sites for this. I’d look to them as it seems GW has eliminated most of their bits making the option most expensive.

If you look into a miniature game called Mage Knight on ebay or wherever you can find them really there are plenty of figures with wings you can use that should be really cheap.

One of my friends used some of their wings for his winged Kroot and after a little bit of work they looked great. If you're playing tournaments it isn't a good idea but otherwise it's good stuff.

There was a pond I visited once. I dubbed it the "Dragonfly Graveyard," since it seemed there were no critters around to eat all the dead dragon flies, and given the size of the live ones that were a constant swarm over the whole area and the size of the husks, their wings would be more than big enough for 40k models. However, I think most people would find using real insect wings on their models as a bit gross.

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular."

Meh, people used to flip when they watched me model in the flgs because i would (and still do) "anoint" my models should i slip with the knife or pinvice. Givin the random way i do things this happens often.

F*ck 'em it brings me favor.

re: the insect style wings:

The images Petey posted are great, take an image of that type, photoshop it to your color preference, and print it out on clear transparency films, available from office supply stores at varied reasonably cheap prices. Depending on film thickness, they are usually stiff enough to mount straight on, and light shining through the transparency will really cement the insect/cellulose look. I'll see if I can dig up some example pics.
