So, I have finally taken a step beyong buying stuff and am starting a city terrain board. To start with my plan is to have 8 1' x 1' squares that will each contain 1 building. I do have farther off plans to do some larger 2' x 1' and 2' by 2' buildings as well.

The basic plan will show about 2 square city blocks. The table is 4' x 6'. There will be 8" of roads around the entire perimeter of the board. Then one road along the center of each side creating a large + sign. That gives me exactly room for 4 sets of 2 1' by 1' buildings.

This is the starting point and I do want more/different buildings at a later date.

My question is this... is 8" wide enough for a road? That will fit a land raider but maybe not a baneblade, Will 8" be too tight a space to get in there and move the figures around? The 1' x 1' buildings will have a side walk around them. So, you will be adding 2 more inches to the movement space.

I just wanted to know from modelling/playing standpoint if tis will be enough room.... for a start. The only reason I ask is that I will be making road sections. I don't want to start cutting until I know this will work.

I have a 12 x 6 city board. It has 34 1x1 building tiles and 1 1x2 building tile. Most of the time I space the roads out at 8inches. You can fit a Baneblade on that sized road, but it will occupy the entire road. I've also used roads up to 1 foot as main roads and down to 6 inches for smaller roads.

I recommend using 2 by 2 foot sections instead of 1. They get crowded way to quickly on 1 foot square.

8" roads sections are fine. However, a main boulevard that is larger can come in handy.

Two general tips to city terrain. Be careful to avoid a simple grid pattern. This leads to real predicatable killzones and firing fields. Try roads that are geometric as much as possible, or have artificial roadblocks.

Second, the exterior color of buildings should not be the same as the interior. Add some blasted off wallpaper, or scorched paint to interior wall sections. This will add color to a drab board and add to the effectiveness of the terrain.

Lastly, I recommedn you look at this: http://us.games-workshop.com/games/40k/cityfight/terrain/cardboardcity/Default.htm

Good luck and keep us updated.

Have an example of geometric? To start with I will be doing basically a grid pattern. As the # of terrain pieces increase in number and size I will be adding larger buildings that will make a grid impossible.

I like this idea:

Just imagine roads on the sides. The rectangle in the middle is a building as are the 4 strangely shaped things on the sides. That way you would have a more closed up board, where it would be harder to get line of site by just sitting in the middle of the board.
The middle structure could be a temple or a fountain. Something that would normally be in the middle of a public place.
Edit: The text-drawing came out super crappy so here's a paint drawing. So here's the slightly less crappy drawing.
