White Dwarf 340 ( UK numbering), the April anniversary one contains rules for fighting HUGE games of fantasy. There's a nice little ally chart that shows who likes who and is recommended for games of at least 10k points. That's per side there, they suggest using multiple players on both sides.
For every full 5k per army you can take a special formation type affair. basically this lets you count any number of a special or rare choice as 1 thing. as in by using 1 slot on the force org you could take 24 cannons. Or Steam tanks. Or Giants. etc etc
Then for every 100 points of difference between the 2 oppossing armies the side with the lesser total gets "desperation counters", which are like fate points. You burn them to either reroll dice, ignore a break test, rally a unit etc etc. Once they're gone they are gone.
Sounds alright I guess, some nice Fluff in there too about massive battles-- 1 tale of an ogre army killed by the largest number of cannons ever fielded in one place (in the warhammer world anyway), but it strikes me as if this will have less legs than Apocalypse perhaps. Just don't think fantasy scales up that well, but it would be fun to try one time.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

I'm with you there. Spent most my fantasy time playing at 1000 points, so 2000 is even a bit of a stretch for me. All the same, we're planning on doing a Fantasy APOC I think in April. Having some official rules to go with it will be neat, though I can't decide if I'm happy or disappointed they aren't as involved as the 40k APOC elements (datasheets, assets).

Fantasy already scales better than 40k. The regular rules are fine at least up to 3000pts.

This is why Ancients or Hordes of the Things interest me. I
want really big battles. My tables feel clogged with 2250
points (might be because of Wood Elf skirmishers taking up
extra space on the table) at 28mm.
So I want to play a smaller scale, but fantasy 15mm are
hard to come by. You pretty much have to mail order
everything and I can't imagine that it's really easy to find
opponents to play. That's just one reason I wanted
Warmaster to do better than it did.

When you play fantasy over 2k you get a lot of nice scalability. Hell you can even bring the good ol' days of Hero Hammer back. Most of the time you just need to add 2 characters and a few other units of RnF units. Some armies do scale better than others but I enjoy playing games in excess of 3k

There were rules to that effect back in White Dwarf 221 (written by Jervis Johnson) and a huge battle report to go with it. I was looking at that issue a few days ago and it struck me that Apocalypse might not have been quite as new an idea as previously advertised...

I'm still not convinced how much fun Apocalypse is for 40K (Lots of large templates, lots of rolling dice, and lots of miniatures getting picked up - hurrah?), and I'm definitely not convinced that it would be much fun for WFB.
I'll have to wait and see the final "rules", but really, fun and WFB top out around 2500 points, IMO...

Missed this from the first post, but you generate extra magic/power dice too. Only makes sense I guess as wizards aren't going to do jack otherwsie are they ?
....people are upset about usable content in WD ? me am I clearly not in touch with the modern gamer mindset.
I think the same WD is suppsoed to have the Libre Chaotica which is extra/new datasheets for chaos, think they are supposed to include cult sheets in amongst them.

Yeah, my friends and I used to play 3k games fairly regularly - there were a lot of models, yes, but I always felt Fantasy scaled much better than 40k did. The fact that you've got all your units in formation (and particularly if you're using movement trays) made large scale games of Fantasy much quicker than 40k games of that scale.

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack |

I like to read WD just to see what the studio has planned for the next month or so. I also like the painting and assembly guides in it. It gives me more insite on how to convert/use all the new multi plastic pieces.
Every once in a while you do get a gem out of it. The basing guide they put out last year was excellent and i do use that a lot now.
